“Hi Alexandria, the Inspire Yoga students are itching to know what Yoga Physics is, so please tell them.” Leanne Schulz According to Alexandria Crow, “Yoga Physics is basically a description of how I teach yoga as opposed to a brand of products.” My approach to teaching is deliberate. I break things down into the smallest details in terms of body mechanics in order to help individuals comprehend what they’re doing with their own bodies. Because I want individuals to have a personal experience and accept individual responsibility, I allow them to combine their knowledge of the subject matter with their own judgment to create something that is both wise and effective for them.

Alexandria Crow: Why You Should Teach Anatomy and Alignment in Yoga

Anyone who knows me well knows that I teach alignment a lot – and I mean a lot. Actually, “a great deal” does not even begin to describe it. In my research, I am interested in anatomical details and am eager to learn more about how the body operates mechanically (as evidenced by my Alignment Cues Decoded series on YogaJournal.com). Patanjali, on the other hand, never addressed anything about anatomy or alignment. So what’s the point? When it comes to teaching alignment and anatomy, I really have two very particular reasons for doing so: one is practical, and the other is entrenched within the philosophy of the Yoga Sutra.

The Practical Reason for Teaching Alignment in Yoga

I teach a lot about alignment, as anyone who knows me would attest. To put it another way, “a great deal” is an understatement. In my research, I am particularly interested in anatomical structures and mechanisms of mechanical function (as evidenced by my Alignment Cues Decoded series on YogaJournal.com). The yoga master Patanjali, on the other hand, never mentioned anatomy or alignment. After all, what’s the point of it? The teaching of alignment and anatomy is based on two very particular reasons; one is purely practical, and the other is rooted in the philosophy of the Yoga Sutra itself.

The Philosophical Reasons for Teaching Asana Alignment

I credit the first sutra – yoga is now – with completely transforming my life, and it is this sutra that I see transforming the lives of my pupils as well. However, it is tough to be here now, clearly and intelligently, to let go of attachment to eternally damaging patterns of behavior and thought, and to learn to be kinder and more at peace with oneself and with the rest of the universe. This idea requires us to identify a tool and then to utilize that tool repeatedly – again and over and over again.

Asana is the tool that most of us begin with and use throughout our lives.

That’s all there is to it.

If that’s the case, how does this asana thing that we all teach and practice qualify as yoga, you might wonder.

The Yoga Sutra That Informs Asana Instruction

Sutra 2.1 has influenced how and why I teach the style of yoga that I do since the beginning of my career: Tapah Svadyaya Isvarapranadhnani Kriya Yoga. That sutra is something like this in my translation: Work hard – often in the opposite direction of your initial impulse – that you know will lead you to a better place; pay attention to whether the work is beneficial or injurious and make wise decisions toward the former; surrender to the process, knowing that the work will lead to a life of less suffering and greater ease.

  1. Rather than focusing on the end result, I was taught to learn anatomy on a deep level, teach alignment extremely well, and teach students to make wise decisions in the moment about props and modifications.
  2. I explain that the ultimate stance they see in photographs isn’t important, and that establishing the simplest variant of that pose with effort and then building upon it over time would eventually take them to the precise position they desire.
  3. I can’t educate them about effort unless they are in alignment.
  4. Adding to that hard labor the ease of breathing and the letting go of any disappointment or judgment about one’s own successes, I am teaching asana in the way that Patanjali describes it.

In addition, by combining those two ideas – effort/ease and sensible decision-making – I hope to encourage individuals to pay attention to the “now” in their lives. In doing so, they are effectively practicing yoga, with alignment serving as their primary tool.

Participants will learn how to design class plans that transform classes into personal laboratories that are inclusive, invite inquiry, provide a safe environment for exploration, and when necessary, allow students to make difficult choices in order for them to learn what is wise for them.

Deconstructing the concepts of stretching and flexibility, we will reassemble those components in ways that are consistent with the way the muscular and fascial systems function. – Skeletal variances and differences will be examined in order to set up postures in a manner that is appropriate for each individual. Every pose and movement will be examined through the lenses of muscular activation, release, stability, and potential counter-productive sensations. This will create a sensory experience in class that encourages each student to use the poses and movements as a tool for personal learning, exploration, and skillful decision making. The Fire – Physically Demanding Hard Work With A Twist Intention + Outcome = Work the Body Wisely. Vinyasa/Power/Flow/Hatha Yoga to Calm the Mind On Saturdays, from 3:00PM to 6:00PM Make a reservation Even though these sessions are some of the most popular on the schedule at the moment, they are also among the most challenging to attain the results that a yoga practice seeks to achieve from a philosophical standpoint. So, how can you get pupils to work hard, move about, and do so in a manner that is ethically sound? Individuals and personal choice will be taken into consideration throughout this practice, which will allow for exploration and discovery while remaining physically demanding while minimizing the hazards and problems commonly seen in yoga programs today. Analytical and biomechanical analysis will be performed to disassemble the postures and activities that were used throughout the practice. We will investigate the range of motion of the joint in relation to poses, and we will look for methods to develop postures that fall within the functional range in order to get a long-lasting and relaxing class result. Laboratory for Class Planning – Creativity for a Purpose Lesson Plans for Personal Exploration are created by combining the following two elements: intention and result. Discovery The Students Who Are Aware of What Is Beneficial to Them Tips for Progression (Sequencing and Formatting Classes) On Sundays, from 3:00PM to 6:00PM, Make a reservation Organizing a class may be time-consuming, intimidating, and boring. In this session, you will discover how to organize classes based on what you’ve studied, regardless of the type or level of the lesson being planned. Students and teachers will work together to plan a class from beginning to end, utilizing class planning tools that are intended to provide students with a personal experience in a group setting so that they learn to approach the topic being presented in a way that is skillful and wise for them to approach it in. A tour of the class, designed to allow participants to experience the concepts that have been presented and developed, will then be given to each participant. Participants will learn how to design class plans that transform classes into personal laboratories that are inclusive, invite inquiry, provide a safe environment for exploration, and when necessary, allow students to make difficult choices in order for them to learn what is wise for them. This knowledge can be applied to applying yoga off the mat as well as on the mat. ALEXANDRIA CROW — JENNIFER ALLEN

Alexandria Crow is a Los Angeles-based yoga instructor who is well-known in the community. Dedicated students line up from mat to mat in Alexandria’s mat-to-mat class, always ready to pause in the deepest of postures for as long as she asks them to do so. Despite the fact that she is well accomplished in her own asana practice, Alexandria decides to step back from the limelight and not demonstrate the postures herself, for fear of making the pupils feel “less than.” As an alternative, she vocally directs them through each posture with pinpoint accuracy.

  1. The challenge is to work within your means while remaining true to your values.
  2. COMPETITION What was it about competition that I enjoyed the most?
  3. Isn’t that what competition is all about, after all?
  4. From the ages of 7 to 14.
  5. I was a member of the University of Alberta’s squad for four years.
  6. While I like the entertainment, dancing, and performance aspects of floor, I preferred bars because of the strength and independence I felt when I was in them.
  7. Gymnastics was really beneficial in helping me to develop discipline and commitment to the practice of yoga itself.

Traditional exercise, in any form, is something I despise.

As a result, after college, I stopped competing and don’t miss it at all.

When it comes to gymnastics, you are taught to be as tough as nails, to compete in the face of pain and injury because it is all about winning and being flawless and capable.

Asana did not show me how to break free from those negative patterns.

Then, via meditation, I was able to learn how to become a great yogi in my own right.

I’ve always been a seeker of information and wisdom, as well as a seeker of a greater understanding of myself and others.

The positions were really an afterthought.

It has instilled in me a huge amount of compassion for myself and others.

Learning the wisdom of yoga has completely transformed my perspective on life.

Hiking is something I like doing.

Because I have a strong interest in kinesiology and anatomy, I am well-versed in postures.

I sit in order to become a better practitioner myself.

Yoga is More Than Asana, with Alexandria Crow

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Alexandria Crow for our 52nd episode. Alexandria has gained international recognition as a teacher’s trainer, and she has conducted teacher trainings and workshops across the world. As the founder of the Yoga Physics methodology, she strives to clearly explain the what, why, and how of asana, meditation, and yogic philosophy to students of all levels and from all walks of life. She does this through her in-person continuing education workshops, her online DeConstruct to ReConstruct Course, and her 300-hour teacher intensive.

Alexandria Crowdoesn’t fit the mold of your usual yoga instructor. When she emailed me and asked whether she would be a good fit for the position because she is an anti-marketing yogi, I squealed with delight. You see, Alexandria is, first and foremost, true to herself, and she has been affecting lives all over the globe for the past seven years, even without the marketing, the wild excitement, or the “brand” that has surrounded her. In her professional capacity, she is first and foremost a teacher training, as well as a lady who is taking her students on an epic journey of change — whether it’s their first time bending onto a yoga mat or it’s a practice to which they have committed their lives.
