Usage notes

It is possible to use the word dawg rather than dog in the following situations: 1. To draw attention to the accent. There are various North American English dialects in which the / sound is emphasized, resulting in a more obvious difference to North American English speakers who do not speak the dialect in question. 2. To distinguish (and emphasize a distinction) between the word “dog,” which refers to the animal, and the word “dawg,” which is a slang term used as a pleasant term of address.

As a result, there is frequently a desire to distinguish between the word of address and the common noun in formal writing.

Word of the Day

You should definitely try the Italian Beef sandwich here! 🙂 I had mine with spicy peppers and mozzarella cheese, which I dipped in ranch dressing! There’s just the right amount of everything: bread, ground beef peppers, cheese, and juice. Dr. Dawg’s Italian Beef Sandwich is now one of my top 5 favorite places to eat in the city! My visits here have always been really pleasant, and the service has always been excellent.

What a great spot to visit! And what a lovely terrace for enjoying a COVID-safe meal. I was out shopping at Pick ‘N Save with my dog in the van, and we were both starving at the time. We had two Chicago hot dogs that were devoid of onions and chili peppers, and they were very excellent. I’ll be returning with a group of buddies.

review by – Yelp

Good! It brought back memories of my childhood (Chicago).

The meal was excellent, the menu was extensive and offered a fair variety, and the décor was appropriate for the setting. This place reminded me so much of Chicago that I sat at my booth and stared at a photograph of the city’s skyline. In any case, I would strongly suggest this establishment.

review by – Yelp

Wonderful and excellent are the words that describe this site. Have a craving for Chicago dogs and Italian beef? Look no further. This is your Mecca, my friend! If this establishment were located in Chicago, it would be among the top 5 greatest hot dog spots! Looking for the greatest burger and fries in Milwaukee? Look no further. Dr. Dawg, I’m sorry for bothering you. This location is really fantastic!

review by – Yelp

I’ve dined here a number of times in the past and will continue to do so. The Italian beef sandwich is a good choice, especially when served as a soaker with hot peppers on the side. It tastes like you’re in the heart of Chicago. An additional excellent choice on the north coast – I just wish I lived closer!

Dawg Pound – Wikipedia

Cleveland Browns’ FirstEnergy Stadium, which serves as their home field, is known as theDawg Pound. The Browns are a National Football League (NFL) club headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, and play their home games there.

Formation

To motivate his defensive colleagues before the 1985 season, Hanford Dixon, then a cornerback with theBrowns, gave them the nickname “Dawgs” that they still use today. The Dawg Pound was established at the 1985 training camp held at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Oregon. Dixon and teammate cornerback Frank Minnifield conceived of the pound concept by emulating the dog-versus-cat connection that existed between the quarterback and the defense throughout the 1950s and 1960s. “We had the concept that the quarterback was going to be the cat and the defensive line was going to be the dog,” Dixon explained.

This mentality was carried over into the stands at the training camp, when spectators began to bark in unison with the players as they arrived.

In addition to being the cheapest seats in the stadium, the bleacher section’s fans were already notorious for being the most vociferous. They embraced their new identity wholeheartedly, donning dog noses, dog masks, bone-shaped caps, and other strange costumes to match their new persona.

Notoriety

Fans of the Dawg Pound rapidly gained a reputation for disobedience as well as a loud and boisterous attitude. The taking of dog food into the stadium was prohibited by team authorities because bleacher supporters would shower the visiting squad with Milk-Bones, along with eggs, batteries, and other objects, according to the team’s rules. Dawg Pound followers also drank copious amounts of alcoholic beverages, with one group slipping a keg into the stadium inside a doghouse. Because of their reputation, the fans of other teams were frequently compared to them – in 1989, when aCincinnati Bengals game was halted due to debris being thrown at the visitingSeattle Seahawks, Bengals coachSam Wycheaddressed the crowd, angrily reminding them that, “You don’t live in Cleveland, you live in Cincinnati!” On at least one occasion, the Dawg Pound’s raucous behavior had an impact on the outcome of a game.

  • During the fourth quarter of a 1989 game against the despised Denver Broncos, a torrent of batteries, rocks, eggs, and other debris rained down from the bleachers, risking the safety of the players and the whole stadium.
  • The Browns gained momentum as a result of this.
  • The Dawg Pound and other supporters ripped the bleachers and seats out of the stands at the final game at Cleveland Stadium in December 1995.
  • Fans in the Pound chanted “Here We Go Brownies, Here We Go!
  • Woof!” on drives to the end of the field, which they threw onto the field while others took them home as souvenirs.
  • – Woof!

The new pound

2006 was the year of the first configuration. Following the refurbishment, in 2016 The original Dawg Pound logo, which dates back to the team’s reintroduction in 1999. When FirstEnergy Stadium was opened in 1999, the sections in the stadium’s east end were given the nickname “Dawg Pound” by club executives. However, unlike the Dawg Pound at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, the Dawg Pound in the new stadium is entirely comprised of bleachers, as opposed to the original’s two decks. The personal seat license for the Dawg Pound was one of the most costly in the new stadium’s history.

The team has trademarked the Dawg Poundlogo, which it utilizes on a limited number of fan souvenir items.

It may be seen on officially licensed Browns products such as T-shirts, pennants, bumper stickers, and other items of similar kind.

What was initially a player and fan movement – the Dawg Pound – has been transformed into a “corporate” entity by the Cleveland Browns organization, which has granted it trademarks, copyrights, and the ability to use the official “Dawg Pound” logo.

“Bottlegate”

On the last drive of a vital late-season 2001 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Browns were driving toward the east end zone in search of what would have been the game-winning touchdown. The Jaguars were awarded the ball after a contentious call on fourth down. On 4th and 1, Browns wide receiver Quincy Morganhad grabbed a ball for a first down and a field goal. After Tim Couch spiked the ball on the next play, referee Terry McAulay examined Morgan’s catch, saying that the replay officials had buzzed him before Couch spiked the ball.

(According to NFL rules, once the following play has been finished, the officials are not permitted to examine any previous plays under any circumstances.) On further examination, McAulay found Morgan never had control of the ball and that the pass was thus ineligible, and therefore the Jaguars were granted possession of the ball.

McAulay signaled the end of the game and ordered both teams to their respective locker rooms.

In what would become known as ” Bottlegate,” the incident led in the immediate prohibition of plastic beer bottles from being brought into future Browns home games.

“GPODAWUND”

In October 2016, a group of Browns supporters made the mistake of unintentionally swapping two pieces of a giant three-part banner, resulting in the message “This is the GPODAWUND” appearing on the banner. As a microcosm of what would be a 1-15 season, supporters used the hashtag #GPODAWUND, which was followed by a 0-16 season in 2017, which was just the second such record in NFL history, and which the fans “celebrated” with a “perfect season” procession around FirstEnergy Stadium in 2018.

Dawg Pound fans

There are now $50 game tickets available for purchase at the Dawg Pound, with season tickets often being required. Compared to the predominantly blue collar fan base that made Municipal Stadium’s Dawg Pound famous, the Dawg Pound has been filled by more wealthy spectators since construction of the new stadium. Hall-of-Famer in the sport of baseball Many of Hank Aaron’s Browns games were played at Municipal Stadium, where he would often sit in the Dawg Pound among the fans, although anonymously.

The offensive lineman-sized man with his dog mask and No.

Thompson rose to prominence in 1995 as an unofficial spokesperson for Browns supporters opposed to the team’s relocation to Baltimore.

He testified before the United States House Committee on the Judiciary and appeared on the Bill Maher show Politically Incorrect. Other well-known admirers include the Bone Lady (Debra Darnall), Pumpkinhead, and many others (Gus Angelone). as well as The Macho Fan (real name unknown)
