Interview with Gabriella Giubilaro

We had the pleasure of welcomingGabriella Giubilaro to Vancouver for a three-day workshop, which was followed by a half-day teacher training intensive at the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Association (Vancouver). On the final day, Gabriella was gracious enough to answer questions gathered by Bibigul Amirova, which she graciously shared with the group. The following is a transcript of that interview (supplied by Christine Rondeau), which has been lightly altered for clarity and readability purposes. What are the benefits of a regular yoga asana practice, and what difference does it make in someone’s life, are you able to describe?

  • Because it is your sadhana, you have the freedom to decide what to do.
  • In the beginning, most individuals merely practice asana (yogic postures).
  • It provides you with stability and strength in your life.
  • It’s a tapas bar.
  • Strength, stability, and, of course, enthusiasm are the characteristics that I like.
  • Determine a time, no matter how difficult, to maintain your discipline, to go inside, and to carry out your daily practice.
  • It doesn’t matter if you’re doing advanced poses, simple poses, beginner poses, senior poses, or anything else; it’s completely independent.

We reach a certain point of maturity and then continue to grow.

It is not required that you perform advanced asanas once again.

As an example of someone who prioritizes his practice above all else in his life, Guruji is a role model.

BKS Iyengar is someone I’ve never met in person and have only seen him in video clips.

Was it your own experience, and do you believe that strictness is necessary while teaching Iyengar yoga?

Many individuals are perplexed by this situation.

This is due to the misconception that being severe and serious equates to being difficult.

It is necessary to be strict at times.

Guruji was, without a doubt, rigorous!

He seemed a tad agitated, but his agitation was intended to rouse us awake.

The “difficult” instructor, the one who teaches you the tapas, is the one who changes you into a better version of yourself.

When I look at the granddaughter, Abhijata, I can see it in her energy and her zest for life, and I’m certain that her grandfather, Guruji, was quite strict with her.

I’m relieved that I was not present and that he did not harm me in any way.

The guru, to be precise.

Guru is a slang term for weight.

These terms are known as laghu and guru in Sanskrit.

A lot of people find him to be a hulking individual.

As a result, a large number of people deserted the Iyengar tradition.

I’ve seen this from the beginning.

He knew precisely where to touch and who to yell at, which was problematic since he could also be quite pleasant, kind, and soft with certain individuals while being extremely difficult and aggressive with others.

Away from the classroom, he was a beautiful and loving soul.

He appeared to be a completely different guy.

Every time he got within a few feet of me, I was terrified.

Can you fathom what I’m talking about?

I was usually hiding someplace, yet he was never intimidating outside of the classroom.

His purpose was to shake us up, to awaken us, to discover something.

This is not a part of our society, and I understand that.

This has been our custom for many years.

And I agree with you on that point, but it is not the Indian way of doing things.

It can be difficult to strike a balance between our tradition and their tradition, and many issues and tragedies have occurred in Iyengar Yoga and other systems when these (traditions) come into contact with the East.

It is concerned with the issues that exist between the east and the west.

However, it is not limited to Indians; it is also quite frequent among teachers and those in positions of authority.

It was a fundamental aspect of his character.

What would you say in response to this question?

Iyengar Yoga is not about alignment since (physical) alignment is only a minor portion of what it teaches and practices.

You cannot achieve this if you are not properly aligned.

There must be vitality everywhere in the body, and this is what we must perceive when we are instructing others.

I had to strive for years, and continue to struggle, to get my legs to work and have the same quality of life as my upper body, and I still do.

The upper bodies of some people are still alive, but the legs of others are dead.

In order to focus on the pelvis and the legs, I had to learn how to seal my chest and avoid overworking it during the process.

I tried many different variations in order to understand how to move the pelvis and the legs properly.

Iyengar do urdhva dhanurasana and kapotasana using a chair, it is clear that he is receiving a great deal of assistance.

He wasn’t executing the positions from the ground, as you might expect.

In addition to having this appetite, this passion and interest in learning, you will also have the ability to be creative.

If you simply try to reproduce anything over and over again, you will not develop any intelligence.

Guruji was practicing with her on marichyasana III one day when she came to him.

As a result, she was there, repeating the drill from the day before.

“Yesterday is yesterday, and it’s no longer there,” he responded.

It is necessary to listen to the teacher and repeat what the teacher says and performs at the beginning of the lesson, but it is then necessary to investigate.

During the session, I was able to do a little portion of this with you.

If you never venture out into the unknown, you will never comprehend.

The same class, the same directions, and the same thing should never be repeated by us as instructors.

This does not imply the development of new asanas.

Perhaps you alter the order in which you speak, the timing of your remarks, or the words you use.

Because the brain is the organ that consumes the most energy, it is necessary for our brain to save energy.

This is something that should not happen in yoga.

In the case of becoming mechanical, we are no longer doing yoga.

When doing yoga, it is important to stay mindful.

” Now I’ll take the arm down,” you say, and then you take the arm down with you.

Before making any movement, you must always be aware of your surroundings, determine whether or not to make the movement, and then take action.

You learn how to hone your attention skills.

Yoga citta vritti nirodha.

Yoga is the practice of learning how to observe the mind, how to regulate it, and how to direct the mind to utilize its senses of perception at some times and not at others, all at the same time.

It is all about the energy of things.

We are easily sidetracked, therefore we require some instruction.

From the beginning to the finish of the asanas, you are training your body’s attention to remain focused throughout.

If yoga is performed mechanically, it is no longer considered yoga.

Pratyahara is the link that connects the outward and interior aspects of one’s activity.

We cannot wait until we are eighty or ninety years old before saying, “Now I’m going to start this.” Yoga’s limbs* can be compared to the branches of a tree in terms of structure.

So begin to work on the other limbs of yoga, even if only a little at a time.

Afterwards, there is dharana, which is focused concentration, dhyana, which is meditation, and samadhi, which is God’s gift of enlightenment.

To recap, if someone were to ask you, “What is Iyengar Yoga, and is it about alignment?” you would respond, “Iyengar Yoga is about alignment.” You must respond with, “No, it’s attention, attention in the body,” or anything along those lines.

There has also been some criticism of the props that we have used.

You educate and travel all over the world, which is rather impressive.

I can only speak for the Italians and the Russians at this point.

They seldom take themselves too seriously and are quick to dismiss some issues as unimportant.

In paschimottanasana for 10 minutes, someone will begin to share their latest eggplant dish after 3 minutes, if I continue to hold them in the pose.

Russia takes whatever you say and goes above and beyond it, and I have to tell them, “Enough, enough.” They are extremely diligent in their pursuit of an education.

When I used to go to Rome to teach, people would often fail to show up because it was sunny and they preferred to spend their time at the beach.

The distinction lies in the individual’s personality.

Personally, I don’t care for it when someone dresses too formally for yoga or shows up too well done up for the class.

My bloomers are a source of amusement for many teachers.

Some of them are saggy and stretched out, but I still wear them in workshops and in my Florence class.

Of course, I make every effort to maintain a clean environment.

The beauty is within, and it is this that we must discover via your yoga practice.

Guruji was similar in this regard.

He was a tough individual on the outside, but he was a wonderful guy on the inside. Don’t make snap judgments about individuals based on their appearance. * The eight components of yoga are referred regarded as the limbs of yoga, rather than actual limbs such as the arms and legs.

Gabriella Giubilaro is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher who is well-known for her exceptional teaching style and sense of humour. She was an actor for 15 years before retiring. She began practicing yoga in 1998, and in 2000, she traveled to India for the first time to further her knowledge of the practice. She got so enthralled with the yoga cosmos that, on the way back, she decided to divorce the theater and marry yoga. It was at the Iyengar Yoga Institute Amsterdam that she received her Teacher Training certification. She travels to India to study with the Iyengar family on a yearly basis. For two years, I lived in Germany and studied and taught yoga.

She also teaches the Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training course and runs the Centro Iyengar Yoga So Paulo.

She has two children and enjoys reading, traveling, and practicing and teaching yoga.

Silvia Stocche

Silvia is an architect who began her yoga practice in 2006 while living in New York. She is a certified yoga instructor. Her discovery of Iyengar yoga, which deeply resonated with her architectural inclinations, was love at first sight. In 2016, she became an Iyengar yoga certified teacher and began making periodic visits to the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India, always looking for guidance and inspiration. Her curiosity about the body in motion, as well as her fascination with yoga philosophy, guide her on her ongoing research.

Julia Mattos

Since 2002, I’ve been a yoga practitioner. She graduated from Mackenzie with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, and with the birth of her first child in 2012, she has divided her time between family, yoga, and, on occasion, architecture. She also coordinates Sanskrit study groups and teaches Philosophy of Yoga in a variety of settings throughout Italy, including the teacher training course taught by Gabriella Giubilaro at the Istituto Iyengar Yoga Firenze.

Graduated with honors in Physical Therapy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (1997), and has since earned a doctorate in Morphological-Functional Sciences from the State University of So Paulo (2005), as well as post-doctoral degrees from the Federal University of So Paulo (2009) and the University of California at Los Angeles – UCLA (2012). Since 2006, she has worked as a teacher and researcher in the School of Arts, Sciences, and Humanities at So Paulo University. The study subjects to which she devotes her time include non-pharmaceutical therapies to promote and preserve the nervous system, such as physical activity and nutrition, as well as nutritional interventions.
