Yoga Journal (Yoga Journal): What recommendations would you provide to someone who wants to start living a vegan lifestyle? Rina Jakubowicz (Rina Jakubowicz): Take things one step at a time, and don’t be hard on yourself if you make a bad decision on any given day. If you need to cheat a little bit, don’t be too harsh on yourself; it’s just part of the process. Also, avoid attempting to influence the attitudes of those who are not vegan. Just be yourself and don’t try to convince anyone else of your newfound wisdom.

  8. When I travel, there are clear difficulties to overcome.
  9. I always carry some protein powder and all of my vitamins with me so that I can at the very least have things on hand.
  10. RJ: Take the time to figure out what is genuinely healthy for you, regardless of what the statistics suggest.

I’m a woman of Latin descent. I am a vegetarian. In addition, yoga teaching is my full-time profession and way of life. I am an outlier in my society, but I wholeheartedly accept it since I am wholly unique!

How I’ve Explained Yoga Culture to My Latin Community

To persuade my family and community that adopting yoga as a lifestyle and full-time vocation was a wise decision, both financially and spiritually, was a difficult task. Nonetheless, as they saw my professionalism, success, and self-sufficiency, they began to take it more seriously as well. Hispanics, on the whole, are devoted to their faith, and the church serves as their spiritual home. Yoga, of course, teaches that God does not exist in a physical location, but rather is all-encompassing. As a result, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I had a few conflicts with folks who claimed that yoga was “the devil’s business.” I didn’t try to persuade them to think otherwise.

Why I Decided to Become a Vegan

I was a vegetarian for seven years prior to converting to veganism in 2013. I realized that my decision to consume meat and dairy was contributing to a heinous act of animal cruelty, and my conscience couldn’t bear it any more. I had to acknowledge that my practices were entirely self-serving (a 3-second enjoyment of taste on my tongue). In addition, if I had the will to modify my behaviors, I could do this. My decision to do so was both ethical and liberating for me. An additional positive side effect of being vegan was that I dropped weight and became healthier as a result of the change in lifestyle.

The Challenges I’ve Faced as a Misunderstood Vegan

My culturally unconventional decisions have made it tough for my family and friends to comprehend what I’m going through right now. Despite the fact that many people accept me for who I am, their lack of knowledge about veganism has presented some amusing hurdles along the way. The first time my husband (who is now a vegan) and I ate at my parents’ house after I made the conversion, my mother placed a large block of plain tofu in the center of the table on a dish in the middle of the table. “Can you tell me what this is?” I inquired.

4 Tips for Owning Your Veganism

When you take ownership of your veganism, you eliminate the need to compel anybody else to do so. Your actions are sufficient. Don’t try to impose it on others. If they ask you questions, merely provide the bare minimum of knowledge and let them to continue their exploration on their own. Rina Jakubowicz: An Out of the Box Interview

Continuing the Out of the Box series, this next installment will feature someone I greatly admire. Instead of being elevated to a lofty position, think of yourself as a “lotus in murky water” sort of person. Rina Jakubowicz and I first met five years ago when she traveled to San Francisco to offer a yoga course and autograph copies of her book, Yoga for Everyone.   9. What is it that motivates you to do what you do?
  10. I approach individuals from a position of love and compassion, and I maintain a connection with my higher ideal in order to know what decisions to make in my personal and professional lives.
  11. What evidence do you have that you are living your words?

Instead, I walk my talk by saying, “I’m doing my best and I’m aware that I still have a LOOOOOOONG way to go!” Every morning, I sit down to study, and I examine every thought, word, and action to see if they are in my best interests, the best interests of those around me, and eventually the best interests of those who are beyond my immediate grasp.

  2. How does what you’re doing make a difference in the lives of people throughout the world?
  3. In terms of making a difference in the world, I have no notion how what I’m doing is contributing to it.

What were your motives for doing this?

I was not enlightened in any way.

I was confident in my ability to return to the source, to the truth.

As a result, that serves as my incentive.

If you encountered any difficulties along the road, how did you overcome them?

The most difficult issue is overcoming the oscillations and inclinations of my thinking.

Maintaining mental control is essential for being productive and balanced, and this can only be accomplished by keeping my sights on the greater goal.

The only way to overcome these difficulties is to put the lessons into practice. Once I have gained a better understanding of the facts, the minor problems just go away.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:)

My name is SueAnn Ferrogari, and I’d like to introduce myself. I was born and raised in New York, and I presently reside on the Hawaiian island of Maui. In my spare time, I like to be outside in nature, trekking barefoot, swimming in waterfalls, or relaxing on the beach. Whenever I’m not outside, I like to spend time at home, where I do a lot of my creative work and devote a significant amount of time to my personal yoga practice.

How did you get introduced to yoga?

While in high school, the one thing that ever truly appealed to me was art class, which I took every single day. During the school year, I spent half of my time in the art department and the other half competing as a cheerleader. When I was 17, I was involved in a terrible car accident in which my vehicle was completely destroyed. I had been to several doctors after the accident because I was experiencing continuous back pain. It was approximately two weeks after the accident that I went to see my doctor, and she recommended that I try yoga instead of sending me to physical therapy (since she knew I wouldn’t go).

I attended my first yoga class and thoroughly enjoyed it. Because of my upbringing, the mobility of my body and the flexibility came effortlessly to me. For years, I practiced and saw how it altered my physical appearance, but more significantly, how it altered my attitude and outlook on life.

When did yoga get “serious”?

It was time for me to leave New York and settle in South Florida where I could pursue my career full time. I was still in college, nearing completion of my degree to become a children’s art teacher, but I dropped out and relocated before I could finish it. I was taking online classes to get my degree, and one night while studying for an art history exam, I came across an advertisement for a yoga teacher training program in Costa Rica. I decided to travel to Costa Rica just for the experience of practicing yoga there.

It was in Miami that I met my instructor Rina Jakubowicz, and it was with her that I completed a number of teacher training courses and seminars in order to further my studies.

It has always been in my nature to desire to be of service to others, and through yoga, I have discovered an outlet that allows me to express myself creatively while doing so.

Can you share your biggest challenges?

The most difficult problems I’ve faced in yoga have been self acceptance and appreciating my own value. Since I spent over ten years as a competitive cheerleader, I’ve developed a competitive streak that has become ingrained in my personality. Every time I went into the practice area, I saw that I was continuously striving to perform better than everyone else in the room. Non-stop competition with the rest of the yoga class, as well as with myself, was a regular feature of my practice. I used to tell myself things like, “If those other people can do it, why can’t I?” and “If those other people can do it, why can’t I?” That was the way I regarded myself and my practice for many years before I met my instructors and changed my perspective.

I used to place post it notes all over my house, my vehicle, my backpack, on my yoga mat, and wherever else that I was certain would be seen, with messages like “You Are Enough” and “You Are Where You Are Meant To Be” written on them.

But I sat and worked on it, employing meditation and skills from my yoga practice to aid in the battle against my thoughts.

How do you handle pressure?

I believe that a great deal of pressure is being exerted through social media sites. However, for me, this is straightforward. Contrary to popular belief, I do not evaluate myself in relation to others. In my mind, if I am putting up my best effort every day, then I have accomplished enough. Furthermore, I’ve come to terms with the fact that, even if I’m having a bad day or have fallen off the healthy eating wagon, I am still a human being who deserves compassion, and I must show compassion to myself.

I believe that finding humility is the most effective strategy to deal with difficulties; I have found that when I can humble myself, there is far less pressure to perform in a specific way.

Can you share your thoughts on self consciousness?

When I was younger, I was the type of student who would skip a class if I knew I would have to read my work out in front of the class. I was terrified of giving a speech in front of an audience. I mean, that was my greatest nightmare come true. Throughout my whole teacher training program, I was aware that I would ultimately have to speak in front of a group of people, which was a terrible prospect for me. At the beginning of my teaching career, I was so nervous that it made me feel nauseous.

It took a while for those frightening sensations to fade away, but it was all about pushing myself to conquer them.

What was your most embarrassing moment (in regards to yoga of course;)

One of my most humiliating moments occurred not long ago when I was out at a gala that was raising money to help women who were facing substance abuse disorders. I was with a few of my other yoga pals, and we were all dressed up for the occasion. As the night drew to a close and we were all making our way back to our cars, a parking lot security guard approached me and my group of yoga friends and inquired about the occasion. We ended up chatting about handstands, and she became enraged when I questioned her ability to do yoga in a pair of high heels.

I threw my hands down on the parking lot and kicked up my heels, completely disregarding the fact that I was already standing on additional height.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

I was a little embarrassed, to say the least!

How did yoga influence your life in other ways?

What I’m about to discuss will be a little more intimate in nature. The practice of yoga has had a profound impact on my life. When I originally started my teacher training program, I was in a relationship that was less than ideal for both of us. The fact that I was growing emotionally and spiritually via my training seemed to be having a negative impact on my relationship with my partner at the time. At the moment, I couldn’t comprehend how bad things had gotten for the time being. When I eventually realized that the way I had been treated for so long was not what I wanted for myself, it took even longer for me to comprehend that I did not deserve to be treated in this manner.

After he passed away, I spent months figuring out how to live on my own and discovering my own value.

When I walked into the restaurant to get my normal order, one of my regular waiters approached me and inquired about my life and how everything was doing.

Since then, we have purchased a home together, and I can honestly say that I am the happiest I have ever been in my life.

All of that time spent in self-study, in the ups and downs that my practice has carried me through, but when I emerged on the other side knowing what I deserve and what I am worth, I was able to find a partner who could match my value and my expectations.

What does your daily routine look like?

In terms of my daily routine, everything is centered around my yoga mat. I get out of bed in the morning and sit in my bed thinking about the ideas I have for the class I will be teaching later that day. When I go to the studio, I make myself a cup of coffee and an avocado toast. In the morning, I give a Vinyasa Yoga session for my more experienced students at 9:30am. In the afternoon, I teach a Gentle Yoga class at 11:15am. After returning home and having lunch with my girlfriend, I will spend the rest of the day either at the beach or doing some art.

After that, I go home and prepare dinner as well as lunch for the following day.

And what about your flexibility training? Where does that fit in?

Consistency is the key to achieving flexibility. Keeping up with it is something that must be done on a regular basis. However, in order to maintain the body balanced, we must not only train in flexibility, but we must also train in methods that will strengthen the body. Because I already have a reasonable degree of adaptability, I decide to push myself a bit farther. When I self-practice, I put up a stopwatch and commit to holding each posture for 5 minutes at the most. When I reach a moment in my practice when I am feeling open, I set up two yoga blocks and focus on over-splits to assist increase my flexibility and range of motion.

What keeps you motivated?

When I begin to feel unmotivated, there are a number of strategies that I employ to assist me get back on track. I usually start with “The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali” – the book that completely transformed the way I looked at the world and how I approached things. The book is one I read and reread on a regular basis, and I write notes in it as well as draw inspiration from it. I also utilize YouTube to listen to swami’s give lectures on yoga and the spiritual component of the journey, which I find quite interesting.

Also, the way he has complete control over his body is mind-boggling!

What are your future plans/goals/dreams?

Right now, I’m focusing on future objectives. I intend to study and teach as much as I possibly can, but I would really like to enroll in another teacher training program at some point in the future. My ambition is to travel the world and teach in various nations throughout the world. I would also like to have my own yoga studio at some time, where I would like to provide a children’s yoga program to my students.

Any tips for passionate people starting out?

Don’t give up on your dreams! Take it one day at a time, and you’ll be OK. People are intimidated by yoga as a whole; many of us follow vegetarian or vegan diets, we spend hours on our mats, and we chant in Sanskrit. From yoga is everything but frightening. A lot of individuals are unfamiliar with any of these concepts. As a result, start small and commit to only one lesson each week.

Eventually, that one class will be divided into two, and those two classes will be divided into three. If you have any questions, always ask them since the teacher is there to help you! Concentrate on yourself and always do what makes you feel good in your body on any given day.
