Originally from New York City, Sharon Salzberg (born August 5, 1952) is a New York Times bestselling author and a teacher of Buddhist meditation techniques in the Western world. In 1974, she joined forces with Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein to form the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. Vipassana (insight) and metta (loving-kindness) meditation methods are her primary focus, and she has been teaching meditation retreats across the world for more than three decades. All of these practices have their origins in the TheravadaBuddhist tradition, which is where they were developed.

She lives in New York City with her family (2013).

Early life

Originally from New York City, Sharon Salzberg (born August 5, 1952) is a New York Times bestselling author and teacher of Buddhist meditationpractices in the Western world. It was with Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein that she co-founded the Insight Meditation Society, which was based in Barre, Massachusetts. Vipassana (insight) and metta (loving-kindness) meditation methods are her primary focus, and she has been teaching meditation retreats across the world for more than 30 years. In the TheravadaBuddhist tradition, all of these practices have their origins.

She lives in New York City (2013).

Career

Salzberg is a student of Asian masters such as Dipa Ma, Anagarika Munindra, Sayadaw U Pandita, and others. It was in 1974 that she, with the help of Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein, created the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. They co-founded the Barre Facility for Buddhist Studies in 1989, and the Forest Refuge, a long-term meditation retreat center, nine years later, with Goldstein. She is now regarded as a prominent instructor in the Vipassana movement. The book Meetings with Remarkable Women: Buddhist Teachers in America, by Lenore Friedman, contains an in-depth interview with Salzberg.

Honors

Her “Outstanding Contribution to the Mindfulness of the Western World” was recognized by the New York Open Center in 1999, and Salzberg received the award.

What do we do when individuals or events make us feel uncomfortable or upset? We often feel like we are being victimized. We get upset, angry, and defensive as a result of this. In the process, we begin to perceive people as enemies, and when things don’t go our way, we begin to regard ourselves as enemies as well. But what if we were able to get past the sorrow, the anger, and the defensiveness that we are experiencing? Inspire by Buddhist philosophy, this book introduces us to the four types of enemies we may encounter in our lives: the outer enemy, which includes people, institutions, and situations that wish to harm us; the inner enemy, which includes anger, hatred, fear, and other destructive emotions; the secret enemy, which includes self-obsession that isolates us from others; and the super-secret enemy, which includes deep-seated self-loathing that prevents us from finding true happiness.
