The Gong Show: An Interview with Kundalini’s Gurmukh

Mary May Gibson was the name given to the woman who goes by the name of Gurmukh Kaur Khalsawa when she was born in 1943 in rural Illinois. Her parents were Methodists from a middle-class family who enjoyed music and square dancing. According to Gurmukh, “there was always a hoedown in our living room.” They pushed her and her three siblings to be imaginative and imaginative in their play.
“We were constantly performing and organizing events,” she says.
Were you a member of the generation that used to “tune in and drop out”?
The 1960s were a magical time.
- How long did you live as a hippie?
- We went a year without receiving any money or having access to a vehicle.
- We also ate strange mushrooms, chopped sorrel, and ate moss, among other things.
- I purchased meals using food stamps and fasted extensively during the day, during which I bodysurfed.
- After three years of wearing only one item of clothing, a blue dress with white polka dots, never brushing my hair, and constantly saying, “Hey dude, how’s it going?” I finally broke down and bought a new outfit.
- So I phoned a buddy, who generously donated me money so that I could return to the Bay Area.
- What caused this to occur?
That’s when I met Yogi Bhajan, who was the one who introduced me to the practice of sadhana.
It was a significant adjustment for me, and I rather enjoyed it.
You must have been startled to find yourself in Los Angeles.
What do you consider to be the most difficult aspect of your life?
Yogi Bhajan taught us to be householders, to have a family, to pay bills, and to remain yogis at the same time, but I didn’t want to marry or have children.
My marriage, on the other hand, has provided me with the finest 23 years of my life.
Rollerblading around the boardwalk at Venice Beach with my hubby is a great way to spend a day.
And, last but not least, what is it that you’re hiding behind that turban, and do you ever remove it?
Every night, I brush and braid it, and I also use coconut oil to condition hair.

In 1943, Mary May Gibson was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, and became known as Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa. She is a teacher of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan and a pioneer in the field of pre-natal yoga. She is the co-founder and director of the Golden Bridge Yoga Center in Los Angeles, as well as the author of two books and three DVDs on the subject of yoga and meditation. She has established herself as a yoga instructor for Hollywood movie stars.
Marjorie May Gibson was born in a small town in Illinois to middle-class Methodist parents who raised her as a Methodist. She moved away from home when she was nineteen years old to pursue college at San Francisco State University in California. She married a Ph.D. student while there, and in 1964, she gave birth to a baby boy who was born with a congenital heart condition. She was called “Shannon Danuele” by her parents, and she passed away seven months later. After suffering over the death of their child, the couple decided to dissolve their marriage amicably.
Following that, she relocated to Maui.
Introduction to Kundalini Yoga
In 1970, she and a coworker visited the3HOashram inTucson, Arizona, where they received spiritual guidance. In Arizona, she stayed for two years, where she worked at the ashram and taught yoga at the University of Arizona as well as the Arizona State Correctional Institution. It was in the ashram that she first met Yogi Bhajan, the revered guru of Kundalini Yoga, in 1970. When they met for the first time, he gave Mary a new name: “Gurmukh,” which means “the one whose face is towards the Guru” (i.e., the one who has committed his or her life to the service of the Guru).
She subsequently went on to work in the field of home births with a Santa Feobstetrician/gynecologist, following which she decided to make teaching yoga her full-time profession.: 7–9
Teaching pregnant mothers yoga
In 1977, Gurmukh traveled to India on a pilgrimage, and upon her return, she settled in Los Angeles, where she met Gurushabd Singh Khalsa, with whom she would marry in 1982. When Gurmukh gave birth to their daughter, Wahe Guru Kaur, in February 1982, he was forty-three years old and had done so at home with the assistance of a midwife. She then leveraged her understanding of the Kundalini Yogaas taught by Yogi Bhajan as well as her own personal pregnancy experiences to teach sessions for pregnant women following that.
She has also begun a sixty-hour Khalsa Way Teachers Training certification course for women from all around the world, which they will be able to take back to their communities once they graduate.
With the help of St. Martin’s Press publishers, Gurmukh released a book titled Bountiful, Beautiful, Blissful: Exploring the Natural Power of Pregnancy and Birth with Kundalini Yoga and Meditation in 2003.: 8–11
Gurmukh gained a famous clientele throughout her years as a Kundalini Yoga instructor headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Madonna, Courtney Love, Gwyneth Paltrow, David Duchovny, Annette Bening, and Rosanna Arquette were among the celebrities who received secret guidance from her. Gurmukh Kaur eventually decided to discontinue her exclusive star-studded sessions under the advice of her teacher. HarperCollins publishers in New York released her bestselling guideEight Human Talents: The Yoga Way to Restore the Balance and Serenity Within Youin 2000, which became an instant success.
She and her husband travel the world, teaching classes and conducting seminars, as well as offering teacher trainings.

Please accept my heartfelt gratitude, Gurmukhji.
Gurmukhji: Ayurveda, to my mind, is a straightforward problem that has been overcomplicated, as has been the case with so many other things, since it deals with the mental sphere.
It is fundamentally about finding a balance in your life between the elements of earth, air, water, fire, and ether, and if one can achieve that balance, they will be successful.
It’s the same Universal; nothing can be considered secular; everything must be considered in relation to the whole.
If you can bring everything into that state of harmony between earth, air, water, fire, and ether, you are living the life of a Yogi and an Ayurvedic Practitioner, and you should.
Valdet: For the second question, I’d want to point out that the predominance of Yoga has increased dramatically and exponentially in the previous 40 years, whereas Ayurveda has lagged somewhat in this regard.
What do you believe the future of Ayurveda will be like?
I believe that if you encounter Ayurvedic practitioners and others who are practicing those teachings, you will be inspired to follow in their footsteps.
My firsthand encounter with Ayurveda was in India, where so many people no longer live according to the five elements; they have become “modern,” as in “McDonald’s Modern.” As a result, they get out of balance and are unsure of what to do because they haven’t had that experience from generation to generation.
- Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t, but most of the time they return to their previous way of life, which is what brought them to the clinic in the first place (Spa).
- which I feel is true if you eat well and have a healthy lifestyle, you won’t require such a significant recuperation.
- Valdet: It makes me really pleased!
- When it comes to digestive health, Ayurveda and Yoga both lay a strong emphasis on it, and I received my Yoga teacher training from Yoga Alliance.
- I was wondering what your opinions were on nutrition and spiritual progress.
- What is it about our eating that is so crucial in our lives?
Gurmukhji: What is the reason behind this?
And what you put into your body, people are only now realizing (after a little pause) that what you put in impacts your brain, affects your heart, affects your organs, affects everything about you, including your skin, is really important.
And it’s always been dismissed as unimportant.
McDonald’s, Krispy Kreme, Burger King “Oneness with the Creator” will never be achieved by any of these means.
And what we have to accomplish in this life, as well as the job we have to perform in our lives.

What does Ayurveda mean to you, and how do you implement it into your daily life is the first question I have for you today.

In light of this, I was interested as to what your opinions were on the future of Ayurveda, since it appears to be gaining more traction in the West, particularly since I began studying it barely a decade ago.
Gurmukhji: As a result of its long history and continued existence, I believe it has some legitimacy.
So I believe it will increase, especially in light of our current issues, that people will be forced to change their way of life, their way of thinking, what they eat, what they do, and everything they do in order to be healthy, and they will look to something as ancient as Ayurveda for help.
As a result, they run to some Ayurvedic spa, where they are half dead, and then they attempt to rejuvenate themselves from inside.
Keep the balance on a daily basis, rather than waiting until you have to go through a full detox, fast, or complete overhaul of your life.

And what you put into your body, people are only now realizing (after a little pause) that what you put in impacts your brain, affects your heart, affects your organs, affects everything about you, including your skin, is really important to your overall health.
Moreover, it has always been ignored.
“Oneness with the Creator” will never be achieved by any of this.
And what we have to accomplish in this life, as well as the job we have to perform throughout our lives.
