It is because of my cleft palate and hearing disability that I hear the world in a different manner than other people. A 30 percent hearing loss in one ear and a 70 percent hearing loss in the other afflicts me. In addition to wearing hearing aids, I had to endure years of speech therapy as a youngster. However, the sound is still distorted. On Sunday mornings, my father used to wake me up by blasting music so loudly that I could feel the beat—fortunately, I am able to sense sound now.
My yoga practice in college began when an instructor appeared with a harmonium and instructed us to chant “Sita Ram.” I waited attentively, anticipating the start of the physical training session.
I was under the impression that chants such as Om and Sita Ram were simply exterior sounds, similar to those heard throughout the rest of the world.
I had discovered a practice that had an impact on me on a vibrational level that I had been experiencing throughout my life but had never comprehended.
My chanting and singing practice is even more potent than my asana practice in terms of results.
The best I can hope for is that my musical expertise will convert into positive vibes for individuals who hear me perform.

This music was created specifically for the Yoga Journal Step-by-Step series, yet it has a life of its own that is distinct from the videos. It seamlessly transitions from one track to the next, producing a wonderful audio environment for asana practice in the process. Om Kar, the first tune on the album, establishes the tone.

How to Start a Yoga Journal • Yoga Basics
While maintaining a yoga diary first seemed onerous, the act of journaling helped me to strengthen my practice as well as my relationship with myself. Throughout my month-long intense teacher training program, I kept a yoga notebook. Yoga asanas, yogic history, and chakras were among the topics I covered. Every now and again, I would doodle across the paper to remember my excellent meal or to distract myself when my knee hurt. Despite the fact that I was practicing and learning about yoga for eight hours a day, six days a week, I’m grateful that I continued to write because I discovered what works best when starting a yoga notebook and how to keep it continuing.
- During the session, I took notes in the same notebook that I had used for the rest of my notes.
- Utilize whichever method is most effective for you, but keep the focus on the act of writing rather than the diary itself.
- One of the most essential lessons I’ve learned from journaling is that it is not necessary to write in a poetic style to be effective.
- Write down the first thought that comes to mind and then proceed from there.
- If this is not the case, that is also fantastic.
- Allowing oneself to be vulnerable is important.
- This diary is dedicated to you.
There are a lot of scribbles, capital letters, and a few profanities sprinkled throughout.
There’s a good chance you’ll want to give up.
Some days you won’t feel like writing or you’ll feel like you have nothing to say, and that’s just OK.
Even if you didn’t have a “aha” moment on the mat or if your practice for the day consisted of only one sun salutation, make a small note in your diary about your experience.
We’re sorry, but there is no “cookie cutter” approach or pattern to follow when journaling (not that you’d want one in the first place).
Accept your own path and experiment with different journaling styles until you discover one that works for you.
Examine your answers to the following questions: What am I feeling right now?
What did I take away from this experience?
Is it possible that you obtained a fresh viewpoint or understanding about yourself?
This might refer to information, asanas, one’s own self-understanding, aspirations, or anything else.
First and first, we must understand and study our personal dharma, which may be defined as thoughts, values, or a higher purpose.
Keeping a journal during my training helped me to remain focused on and appreciative of my experience.
