Purchase that has been verified ***** It was this book that made me think about weight concerns, body acceptance, self-image, and how yoga can be utilized to cope with all of these difficulties and more. Making Peace with Your Body Through Yoga is the subtitle of the book, and every time I read it (I’ve read it three times so far) it assists me in accomplishing this goal. I have highlighted the sections that I find most interesting and return to them for inspiration on a regular basis; it is a wonderfully written book.

It is a compilation of essays on a variety of topics.

The women who are modeling the positions are women of different shapes and sizes, all of whom appear to be happy with their bodies and to be enjoying themselves throughout their practice.

That portion of the book is really incidental, and the book is well worth reading for the rest of it.

It’s too light, but it’s a good short read!

Within the kula of yoga, I have the ability to create room for self-love, compassion, and beauty to flourish.

When I accept myself precisely where I am in the present moment with each position, it becomes an offering of acceptance for me.

Having gotten halfway through this book, I decided to abandon it.

The author came across as a member of an extremely exclusive cult, as seen by the repeated language, badly snapped images, and veneration for her “guru.” First and foremost, I must disclose that Christina Sell is my yoga instructor and adviser, so I may be a bit prejudiced in my opinions.

A lot of times, people believe that following this spiritual yogic route will provide a panacea for all of their diseases, but it’s important to remember that it’s a process and a journey, and if you don’t feel that way, there are other options.

A lot of the things that Christina has fought with, I believe, are things that many others struggle with as well – feelings of inadequacy, unworthiness, and body image, for example – and I’m grateful that she has brought this to light.

Although it is not a detailed description of yoga postures, it is a thorough exposition of the philosophy of yoga (specifically Anusara Hatha Yoga).

It is discussed in this book how the contemporary world has influenced us to wage war against our bodies and how a spiritual practice such as hatha yoga might assist us in winning that battle.

Yoga and body image are the subjects of this book.

It also goes into great detail about the spiritual elements of yoga.

My favorite parts of the book were the tales of the ladies she interviewed and their experiences with overcoming poor body image and coming to terms with their own bodies.

It consists of images of average-looking women, many of whom are overweight, posing in various yoga positions.

Despite the fact that I only ever seem to dabble in yoga, I found the content of this book to be really beneficial.

I really enjoyed her description of committing one’s yoga practice or establishing one’s intention for one’s yoga practice to be about interacting with or honoring the Divine, which I found quite inspiring (or whatever it is that you feel spiritually connected with).

For me, I began practicing tai chi this summer and have fallen in love with the practice since I began.

Another person’s hobby might be anything from cleaning the house to cooking meals to participating in sports or doing whatever they find enjoyable.

So many yoga beauties have talked about bulimia, body-image issues/self-hatred, alcohol and drug abuse—but generally before committing to a fitness regimen and seeing it through to completion.

Never had the opportunity to participate in gymnastics as a youngster, but hearing Christina’s tale reminded me of all the perfectly postured handstanders I’ve practised with who don’t appear to be joyful, serene, or welcoming of others despite their gorgeous abs and physical dexterity.

Despite this, a large number of them come from strict disciplines such as ballet, gymnastics, modeling, acting, and/or the fitness sector, where a specific physical look is demanded.

For this, she gives gratitude to the support of therapists and the development of one to one, lengthy mentorship relationships with religious/spiritual leaders (Lee Lozowick and John Friend).

When Chrsitina taught in her YogaGlo sessions, I explicitly disagreed with her “My body is a temple” teachings (for me, “If anything is holy, the body Is”).

Now I see how deeply ingrained her religious views are in her yoga practice, and that it serves as a sort of devotion for her.

My favorite aspects of Christina’s approach are her down-to-earth demeanor and her photographs of individuals of various sizes practising yoga.

Even still, I’ll confess that at first it seemed a little manufactured, especially considering how Christina is such a little little firecracker of a thing.

I suppose this serves to remind me of how constrictive the media depictions of size and the desire to be in shape are.

Her candor about her personal path was a breath of fresh air.

As a plus-size yogi who is one of only a handful of people who practice at my local studio, it was difficult to relate to that.

Normally, I would have given it four stars, but considering the current events, especially the unexpected hatred directed against a practice that was so well lauded in this book, I find it hard to give it that rating.
