MATTHEW FOX — Welcome from Matthew Fox

‘(Matthew Fox’s) creation spirituality is the spirituality of the future, and his Theology of the Cosmic Christ, which he co-authored, is the theology of the future.’ ” – Fr. Bede Griffiths, Oblate of Saint Benedict Excerpt from the audiotape “Spirituality for a New Era:Dialog with Matthew Fox and Bede Griffiths,” which may be found at Holy Names College in Oakland, California, in September of 1992. Matthew Fox is a spiritual theologian, an Episcopal priest, and a campaigner for gender inequality and environmental justice in the United States.

He has received several honors and awards for his work.

Among his many accomplishments is the rediscovery of Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, and Thomas Aquinas as pre-modern mystics and prophets, which he has made significant contributions to.

The University of Creation Spirituality in California was founded by him; he delivers hundreds of seminars each year and is a visiting scholar at the Academy for the Love of Learning.

The Cosmic Mass has been celebrated in dozens of places around North America, and it has been celebrated over 100 times.

Fox is a winner of the Abbey Courage of Conscience Peace Award (given to others such as the Dali Lama, Mother Teresa, Ernesto Cardenal, Rosa Parks, and others).

The Unnameable God, Stations of the Cosmic Christ, and The Lotus and the Rose: A Conversation Between Tibetan Buddhism and Mystical Christianity are among the titles covered.

A New Vision of Pedagogy

Fox founded the Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality, which operated for seven years at Mundelein College in Chicago and twelve years at Holy Names College in Oakland, with the goal of developing a new pedagogy for learning spirituality that combined the ancient Western wisdom tradition with contemporary scientists and modern mystics. During his 10 years as president of Holy Names College, Cardinal Ratzinger – now Pope Benedict XVI – attempted to have the program discontinued. Ratzinger, as chief Inquisitor and head of the Congregation for Doctrine and Faith (which was known as the Office of the Holy Inquisition until 1965), silenced Fox for a year in 1989 and compelled him to resign from his position as director of the Fox film company.

Fox went on to build the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, California, which flourished for nine years before closing its doors in 2007.

After many years of hard effort, Fox is certain that “through reimagining labor, education, and religion, we can bring about a non-violent revolution on our globe.” He has dedicated his life to this goal for many years.

Project: An Educational Transformation for Post-Modern Times, which draws on his 40 years of experience educating adults with an alternative pedagogy that is grounded in cosmology, creativity, and contemplation.

An offshoot of this enterprise has subsequently established a foothold in the city of Chicago.

A new vision of Ritual

Fox founded the Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality, which operated for seven years at Mundelein College in Chicago and for twelve years at Holy Names College in Oakland, with the goal of developing a new pedagogy for learning spirituality that combined ancient Western wisdom traditions with contemporary scientists and modern mystics. While at Holy Names College for 10 years, Cardinal Ratzinger – who is now Pope Benedict XVI – attempted to have the program shut down by whatever means necessary.

  • The program at Holy Names College was terminated three years later, when he removed Fox from the Order.
  • It operated successfully for nine years before closing its doors in 2007 due to financial difficulties.
  • In Fox’s words, “we can bring about a non-violent revolution on our earth” by “reinventing employment, education, and religion,” and he has been working toward this goal for many years.
  • Project: An Educational Transformation for Post-Modern Times, which draws on his 40 years of experience educating adults using an alternative pedagogy that is grounded in cosmology, creativity, and contemplation.
  • This initiative has subsequently spawned an offshoot that has taken root in the city of Chicago.

a new vision inActivism:

The 95 Theses are a collection of essays written by a group of people who believe in certain things. When Cardinal Ratzinger was appointed Pope in 2005, Fox traveled to Martin Luther’s church in Wittenberg, Germany, and banged 95 modern theses against the church door, calling on people to participate in a New Reformation. In 2006, after documenting 30 years of Vatican corruption during the reigns of John Paul II and Benedict VI in his book The Pope’s War: Why Ratzinger’s Secret Crusade Has Imperiled The Church And How It Can Be Saved, Fox repeated the protest by nailing his 95 Theses to the outside of the Roman basilica of Cardinal Law, who covered up sexual abuse committed by more than 90 priests in his archdiocese.

Fox has continued to speak out against the excesses of the Vatican, most notably joining the Indigenous peoples of California in their opposition to the canonization of conquistador-priest Junipero Serra, who was just declared saint.

The OSE is a community and movement of individuals from a wide range of religious (and non-religious) backgrounds who are united by a sacred vow: “I pledge to be the best lover and defender of the Earth that I am capable of being.”

Recognition

A number of prizes have been bestowed to Fox, including the Abbey Courage of Conscience Peace Award (which has also been bestowed upon the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Ernesto Cardenal, and Rosa Parks); the Ghandi King Ikeda Award; the Tikkun National Ethics Award; and other honors. His work has been hailed by theologians, artists, healers, and other thought leaders all around the world for its significance. Among the print and broadcast media outlets that have featured him are The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, People Magazine, Yoga Journal, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Oakland Tribune, New Age Journal, Utne Reader, Spirituality and Health, Tikkun, Science of Mind, Chicago Tribune, The Toronto Star, The Washington Post, The Independent (London), The Guardian, YES!

He has also appeared on The Today Show,Democracy Underground In 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, he was named to Watkins’ Mind-Body-Spirit Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People, where he was placed 25th, 26th, 14th, and 14th, respectively ( 22).

Matthew Fox

Hildegard’s life and work are introduced in this introduction. The life and teachings of one of the most important female artists and philosophers of the Western Mystical Tradition are revealed in this documentary. Hildegard of Bingen created 24 full-color pictures for this book. Matthew Fox, author of Original Blessing, provides insight on the book (250,000 sold). Her name was Hildegard of Bingen, and she lived in the Rhineland valley for much of the twelfth century. Hildegard of Bingen was an amazing woman.

She was also a composer and theologian, having written nine volumes on religion, medicine, science, and physiology, as well as 70 poetry and an opera.

She began seeing visions when she was 42 years old, and they were documented as 36 illuminations, 24 of which are included in this book along with her commentary on each of the illuminations.

According to author Matthew Fox, “If Hildegard had been a male, she would be widely recognized as one of the finest artists and geniuses the world has ever known.” It is a testament to the strength of the women’s movement and the spirit of our times that this towering genius of Western thinking is being rediscovered in all of her splendor and independence.

Hildegard’s music, in addition to her mystical teachings, has been performed and recorded for a new and increasing audience, and she continues to do so.

Seeing Through Evil with Father Matthew Fox, Ph.D.

Mathew Fox, a visionary theologian, presents a fresh perspective on an age-old issue by shedding light on the dark side of evil in such a way that the disguise and the illusion are no longer there. A free and honest discussion about evil and what it genuinely entails is demanded by him. In an era when human people are completely capable of killing the species as well as the ecosystem, Fox refers to the sources of evil inside themselves as a means of escaping and overcoming the situation. Throughout his work, he emphasizes the inherent goodness of all beings, as well as the healing potential of beauty.

Bio

Father Matthew Fox is a priest who served as a member of the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church for thirty-four years before his ordination. While serving as a Dominican priest under the pontificates of Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, he was silenced for a year and then dismissed from the order for speaking out on women’s rights, homosexual rights, and Native American rights. His next move was to the Episcopal Church, where he worked with young people to develop postmodern forms of ritual and worship known as the “Cosmic Mass,” which included elements of hip hop, DJing, video juggling, rapping, and other contemporary art forms.

He possesses a degree in the history and theology of spirituality, and he is the founder of the University of Creation Spirituality, which he founded in 1997.

Matthew Fox

Known for his prolific writing career, Matthew Fox is currently reviving the ancient tradition of Creation Spirituality through his works. In addition to being feminist, inclusive of the arts and artists, knowledge based, prophetic, and concerned about environmental justice, social justice, and gender justice, this tradition is also prophetic. Among Fox’s efforts to revive consciousness of the West’s own mystical legacy has been bringing back to life the mystics Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, and Thomas Aquinas, as well as working with current scientists who are also mystics.

Fox holds a PhD in the History and Theology of Spirituality from the Institut Catholique de Paris, which he obtained summa cum laude (with honors).

He founded the Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality, which ran for seven years at Mundelein College in Chicago then for twelve years at Holy Names College in Oakland before closing its doors in 2011.
