His first focus is being a caring and loving father to his daughter, Destiny, who, at the age of 23, has marched alongside him in Pride parades and Black Lives Matter marches. The like-minded couple has similar political views and are both motivated by a strong sense of social justice. On Finding Yoga

Between the ages of 18 and 22, I was quite depressed. I had attempted to turn my life around several times previously, but I had always focused on treating the symptoms of my issues rather than the underlying causes of them. I’d quit hanging out with troublemakers, keep my work, and cut back on my drinking and socializing. However, I was still enraged and upset. I hadn’t dealt with the trauma of my childhood until now. As a voracious reader, I frequented bookshops, where I came across a yoga book that I purchased.

I began to self-teach in my own house.

It goes without saying that I am a pretty physical person.

I had been feeling numb for a long time; I didn’t feel like I was still alive.

Things that I deal with, especially in light of current events, tend to present themselves physically in my lower body, my jaw, and my shoulders, among other places. This practice has assisted me in letting go of it, and I am confident that it will continue to be effective.

On Forgiveness

The loss of my mother had a significant impact on my life. I began to have doubts about my own value. Was I destined to follow in the footsteps of my parents? At the time, I was a teenager, and I had yet to really grasp the notion of choice and the significance it would have in my life. After my mother died, I went into a tailspin that I couldn’t control. I had completely lost interest in school and athletics. I began dabbling with drugs and alcohol, and I joined up with gangs in the neighborhood.

  • I began the process of seeking internally for solutions when I was 22 years old because I was fatigued and anxious to make a difference.

Because I had the impression that I had completed the task. As a result, I was really unhappy and afraid that I might never see my baby again, as I wasn’t sure whether I was going to make it. And when I learned after a few operations that it was possible that I might survive, I began to think about what my life would be like after that.

One of my teachers overheard me saying, “I took down this post to work for a mayor in Hawaii because the city was putting down homeless encampments.” I get that you’re attempting to persuade us to work for the government, but how do I reconcile something that goes against my morals?

On The Challenges of Re-entry After Incarceration

It was common in the neighborhoods where I grew up to see excessive police presence and incarceration. My mother was imprisoned, and my younger brother has been in and out of prison for the past 11 years, according to my father. My uncle spent more than half of his life in prison. When people disobey the law and are convicted of a crime, they are sentenced to prison or imprisonment, and when they are released, they are expected to return to their communities and contribute to the well-being of those around them.

For example, if someone has a felony conviction, it is extremely difficult for them to obtain employment.

That was done on purpose.

The system was created with the intent of disenfranchising a specific set of people, and it is accomplishing that goal. So when people say, “Oh, we need changes,” what exactly do they mean? The system is functioning in the manner in which it was intended. We must demolish the existing system and rebuild it from the ground up with everyone in mind. I don’t consider myself to be a visionary. While I wish to engage in transformational work, I recognize that it will require visionaries to consider what our society might look like if there were no police or jails.

However, humans haven’t always had access to these resources, and civilizations have struggled to function properly without them.
