On May 4, 2005, a review was published in the United States, and a verified purchase was made. This is an excellent DVD for folks who are just starting started with yoga. The two distinct exercises are vastly different from one another, allowing you to choose which one best suits your mood and/or energy level for the day. The Joy of Yoga: This is the more gentle of the two, but it still has a lot of excellent stretches and muscular training. If you’ve experienced the Crunch Candlelight Yoga, you’ll find this to be a little more vigorous than the last class.
Yoga for Fat Burning: As the name implies, this is a more vigorous form of yoga for fat burning.
- As a newbie, this one presented a little of a challenge, but I enjoyed the sensation of my muscles tightening (working) without injuring myself.
- In both workouts, there is someone to demonstrate changes, and Sarah continuously encourages you to do whatever you are most comfortable with since yoga is not about being overly taxing on your body.

Lose Weight: Fat Burning Yoga Workout
Wriggling into those thin pants causes you to bend yourself into all kinds of bizarre situations. If you bend and twist on a regular basis, it is possible that this will not be necessary. According to Sara Ivanhoe, host of the television show 20 Minute Yoga Makeover: Weight Loss, an intense sequence of yoga flows — a kind known as vinyasa – burns more than 450 calories an hour.
Weight loss is now more accessible than ever before thanks to these yoga positions. These two sequences are designed to give you a full-body exercise. Each one should be repeated 5 to 10 times.
Place your feet hip-width apart and your arms at your sides. Put your fingers together in a lace pattern behind you (palms facing up). While taking a deep breath, bend from your upper back, elevate your chest, and press your shoulders down.
2. Forward Bend
As you exhale, soften your knees and lean forward, allowing your torso to hang in front of your thighs as you inhale. Lift your arms up and above your head while keeping your arms straight and your fingers locked together (ultimately reaching toward the floor in front of your feet).
Take a deep breath and lower your knees into a squat. Separate your arms once you have unlocked and straightened your fingers. When your thighs are almost parallel to the floor, move your arms toward your ears until they are parallel to the floor. Maintain your balance by putting your weight on your heels. Take a deep breath, rise up, and bring your arms to your sides. Exhale.
4. Downward-facing Dog
Get down on your hands and knees, elevate your hips, and extend your arms and legs.
As you stretch forward into the peak of a pushup posture with your arms straight, take a deep breath and exhale. On exhalation, bend your elbows (keeping them pointed back and tightly gripping the insides of your thighs) and lower your body until your chest is touching the ground.
Uncurl your toes so that the tops of your feet are in contact with the ground, and press your tailbone into the ground to stabilize yourself. As you inhale, hug your elbows together and straighten your arms (keeping a tiny bend in your elbows). Lift your chest off the ground. Oh, and for the record, I ended up trading it in for something else (shortly after writing this review, IIRC). -Overall breakdown of the workout: This yoga workout will take you around 40 minutes (if you omit the Crunch introduction; it will take you somewhat less time if you also skip the Tips section).
- Please keep in mind that Sara like the downward facing dog stance, so don’t say I didn’t tell you.
- Power yoga, as most of us would define it, is not practiced here; it moves at a reasonable pace, but most people are unlikely to break a sweat with this one.
- There are a few pauses while Sara takes a break to teach or encourage the audience.
- Level: I would recommend this to a beginner to intermediate level yoga practitioner who has some experience.
- It is possible that some who believe themselves to be high intermediates (or even some solidly intermediate yogis) will find this practice to be too demanding.

I enjoy it, but I don’t adore it as much as I do, say, my Erich, Shiva, or Eoin yoga DVDs, which I adore dearly.
(I personally prefer Fat Burning Yoga over Joy since the range of positions in Fat Burning Yoga is greater.) Joy spends much too much of her time in down dog or lunge for my liking.
There isn’t much here to scare away folks who are cautious of chanting, flowery language, spiritual connotations, and other such things.
I’m starting to get into those kind of activities, so this workout and the ones I just listed don’t appeal to me as much as they did when I was just getting started.
She provides some form training, but her form recommendations are far superior to her instruction, in my opinion.
There isn’t a lot of New Agey chatter in this place, however there is a lot of talking in general.
When compared to power yoga, this workout goes at a faster speed since it makes use of sequences.
The practice begins with teaching on breathing techniques, which is demonstrated in the easy mountain posture.
Immediately following this warm-up, a lengthier sequence is performed, which includes lunges, push-up stance, simple backbends, and several repetitions of downward dog.
Following that, you’ll do a series of twisting lunges, followed by several fundamental standing positions including the proud warrior, triangle, and side angle pose.
It all comes to a close with a brief abdominal part that includes many boat postures and sitting backbends, as well as two Pilates-inspired exercises for the abdomen.
Those who are new to yoga will find Sara’s signals to be clear and precise, and the practice is excellent for novices, especially with the modifications she provides.
This program, which lasts 45 minutes, offers a refreshing departure from standard weight-bearing strength exercises while also providing an opportunity to focus on toning at a more leisurely pace.

I’m not sure how much “fat burning” you’ll accomplish (I wish the video had a better title, but who can disagree with marketing), but this video does raise my heart rate, make me breathe more heavily, and cause me to break a nice sweat.
(I’m a bit overweight (about 60 pounds above an optimal healthy weight), but I’m quite fit – I do Firms and ride a bike.) This is fantastic, and I’d suggest it to anybody who asks me about it.
Because she is so grounded, she is able to maintain a spiritual element in her instructions without coming across as overly new agey or esoteric.

Although more difficult than JOY, it would provide an excellent introduction into Baptiste or Kest in an intermediate-level fashion.
The prayer twist segment, as well as the boat/table sequence, were my favorites.
As you might assume, Ivanhoe is excellent at giving signals and giving form tips.
The fluidity of the movement is excellent.
There are also a lot of downward-facing dogs, which I really like.
I believe I will be using this tape on a regular basis.

Yoga with Sara Ivanhoe- I recently finished watching an amazing instructional video, Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies, with the lovely and graceful Sara Ivanhoe, which was really helpful. Excellently made and directed film (except for the annoying sound effects used to highlight tips, note, and warnings). Ivanhoe comes across as direct, efficient, and honest in his communication. She’d make an excellent television anchorperson. The best in the business. Furthermore, it appears that the DVDs made by Anchor Bayshare high-quality production values as well as valuable information.
I never found the format to be monotonous or dull in any way.
The format and organization are quite effective.
