#FindYourInspiration, Your Tribe + Your Inner Ninja: Q&A with Liz Arch
Subscribe to Outside+ now to get unique access to all of our content, including sequences, instructor tips, video lessons, and much more. In this interview, Kathryn Budig speaks with Liz Arch, the founder of Primal Yoga, on the beauty of ferocious confidence. Finding your tribe is something I really believe in. My tribe is made up of some of the most powerful women I’ve ever met. These females are self-assured, brave, and, most importantly, supportive—always encouraging me to achieve better in all I do.
In addition to being a powerful yoga instructor in Los Angeles, Liz Arch is also a martial arts practitioner who moves with elegance on and off the mat.
Kathryn Budig (Kathryn Budig): “Primal Yoga” is the name given to your particular form of yoga.
How about becoming a ninja?
- Liz Arch (interviewer): When I first started teaching Primal Yoga®, it was a means for me to bring my yogic and martial arts practices together in order to help others achieve more balance, strength, and harmony in their physical and emotional bodies.
- They are both related to the yin and yang energy of the body.
- My training has been in traditional Northern-Style Kung Fu as well as Yang-Style Tai Chi for over a decade.
- In addition, I recently began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which I truly adore!
- KB: You posed for a stunning picture shoot with Robert Sturman in which you refused to be photo-shopped, and the results were stunning.
- What did you hope people would take away from seeing those images?
- Because I am a woman, I have fought with negative body image issues, and it has been a long road to finding acceptance of myself.
While increasing my social media presence, I wanted to make sure that my messages were spreading messages of self-love rather than self-criticism and comparison.
Because what we see in the media is not necessarily a true picture of reality, I wanted to show all aspects of myself, rather than just my “best” views, in my photographs.
KB: As you may be aware, you are originally from Hawaii, where you may not have been reared with the ideal model for a good diet.
LA: Diabetes runs in my family, and I grew up eating a diet consisting primarily of spam, rice, and sugar.
I was a plump baby who was commended for being a “excellent eater” when I was younger.
I first learned about yoga while in college, and I had no clue how big of an influence it would have on the trajectory of my life and my health in the future.
When my desires for spam musubi converted into urges for kale smoothies, I realized something had moved dramatically in my life.
KB: You are a fearless, honest, and stunningly gorgeous young lady.
The most important thing is to be yourself and to be patient with yourself.
For me, it was a great light bulb moment when I realized that the vast bulk of my negative discourse was entirely manufactured by myself.
You don’t give a damn what other people think of you when you’re in your forties.
Make a conscious decision to pull yourself up rather than to bring yourself down on a consistent basis.
Together, in the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie, we can do far more than we can alone, and we can accomplish far more than we can individually via rivalry and comparison. She is the yoga instructor behind AIM TRUE, a regular contributor to Yoga Journal, and a presenter atYoga Journal LIVE!

Kathryn Budig speaks with Liz Arch, the founder of Primal Yoga, on the power of ferocious confidence and the importance of being yourself. The concept of finding one’s tribe is one that I strongly advocate for. They are some of the most powerful women I know, and they are part of my tribe. Despite their inexperience, these girls are self-assured, brave, and, most importantly, supportive, constantly encouraging me to achieve greater success.
- Yoga instructor Liz Arch is a force to be reckoned with in Los Angeles, where she demonstrates grace both on and off the mat.
- Kathryn Budig is a writer who lives in the United Kingdom.
- I’d want to hear more about your martial arts history and why you believe it is a good fit with yoga.
- Liz Arch: I’d want to thank you for your time and consideration.
- Together, these two energies form an exquisite dance between hard and soft, power and flexibility, control and surrender.
- Yoga and martial arts, in my opinion, are ultimately about the discipline of yielding—working with energy and using as little force as possible to accomplish the best possible outcome with minimal effort.
- I received my Tai Chi Quan certification from the Beijing Tai Chi and Kung Fu Academy and am presently a student at LA WUSHU (Lawrence American Wushu).
Ninjas, on the other hand, are extremely rare.
KB: With Robert Sturman, you posed for a stunning photoshoot in which you refused to be photo-shopped.
When you created those visuals, what did you hope people would take away from them?
I appreciate it!
As a health and wellness practitioner, it’s all too easy to compare myself to others and feel like I’m falling short of my goals and expectations.
Since I was 13 years old, I’ve had cellulite on my buttocks, and it took me a long time to discover that there is nothing unattractive or harmful about my body.
I’ll admit that there are still times when I’m my own worst critic, but I’m growing much better at holding a loving space for myself and enjoying all of my unique characteristics, even my jiggly parts!
Was this a defining moment in your life, and what factors contributed to your decision to pursue a healthy lifestyle?
Even though my father is a fantastic cook, we focused on flavor rather than nutrition when we ate at home.
At the time of my discovery of yoga in college, I had no clue how big of an influence it would have on the direction of my life and the quality of my health.
When my desires for spam musubi evolved into urges for kale smoothies, I realized something had moved drastically in my life.
KB: What a fearless, honest, and stunningly attractive lady you are!
The most important thing is to be yourself and to be kind towards yourself.
For me, it was a great light bulb moment when I realized that the vast majority of my negative thoughts were entirely self-generated.
You don’t give a damn what other people think of you when you’re in your 40s.
The only expectations we have to live up to are the ones we set for ourselves.
We should do the same for others in our immediate vicinity.
Together, in the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie, we can do far more than we can alone, and we can accomplish far more than we can by competing or comparing ourselves. Katherine Budig is the yoga instructor behind AIM TRUE, a regular writer to Yoga Journal, and a presenter at Yoga Journal LIVE!

One Woman’s Inspirational Yoga Story Shows That Success Is Not a Solo Journey
Kathryn Budig understands the importance of having a good support system while embarking on a healthy path — and how having wonderful people in your life can help you stay strong. A friend coaxed the prospective yogi into giving yoga another go after she expressed dissatisfaction with her initial experience. She ended up taking a class with a different teacher, and she ended up loving it this time around. Her friend’s encouragement of her yoga practice was the beginning of a life-changing adventure, profession, and passion for the author.
This was a few years after Kathryn had become a teacher herself.
she’s legendary,” she says of the “most famous, amazing woman in yoga.” When she was a younger instructor, she remarked, “she came in and took this class with me.” “It made me want to wet my pants as a young instructor when the finest yoga teacher in the world walked into my class,” says the author.
- “She came back the following day, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, she came back, she must not have hated it, that’s wonderful!'” says the instructor.
- The next week, Kathryn managed to muster up the courage to approach her and speak with her.
- “I admire you tremendously, and it would mean the world to me if I could take you out for coffee and pick your brain and receive your counsel,” she told Seane.
- The yogi was overcome with appreciation at Kathryn’s treatment of her as “a regular pupil,” as she described it.
- They do all they can to make the lesson as tough as possible in order to prove to me that they are wonderful, and I can assure you that nothing has changed.
- From then, a friendship that will last a lifetime was formed, and the two have been friends for approximately ten years.
- Her first instinct may have been to dismiss me as a competitor, but she instead welcomed me with open arms.
