Back in 1956, on the day Elvis Presley recorded the song “Hound Dog,” I was born in Queens, New York City. In high school, I acquired a ‘curious interest’ in Buddhism as a result of the death of my sister when I was sixteen. But it wasn’t until my first marriage began to fall apart that I began to really consider practicing yoga and making the trek to a zendo.

Nonetheless, after three years, I gave up practice and moved to the Lower East Side, where I began writing about the punk music and cinema scene of the time.

My practice resumed in 1989 after another relationship ended in divorce.

I began studying with him in 1995, and I was ordained into the Order of Interbeing the following year in 1997.

It should come as no surprise that many modern yoga practitioners are also students of Buddhist meditation practices, and that many Buddhists are also practitioners of yoga as well. As a result, the two faiths share common roots, and the Buddha himself was a skilled yogi, as previously stated. Before Frank Jude Boccio, however, no one had presented a good book-length discourse that properly integrated the two approaches in a successful manner.

Boccio began doing yoga almost 30 years ago and began studying Buddhism shortly after.

However, despite the fact that he met Buddhists who practiced yoga as well as yogis who performed Buddhist meditation, he felt that there was a missing link.

He dispels this misconception by demonstrating that Buddhist practice is in fact a form of yoga, presenting a meditational approach to asana practice, and arguing that confronting the problem of suffering is fundamentally a yogic undertaking.

Nonfiction Book Review: MINDFULNESS YOGA: The Awakened Union of Breath, Body and Mind by Frank Jude Boccio, Author, Georg Feuerstein, Foreword by . Wisdom $19.95 (341p) ISBN 978-0-86171-335-6

Frank Jude Boccio is the author, with Georg Feuerstein serving as the foreword. ISBN 978-0-86171-335-6, $19.95 (341 pages). Despite the inconsistent execution, this book by yoga instructor and mindfulness meditation practitioner Boccio presents a welcome and ambitious synthesis that is still well-written. In this book, the author connects the teachings of the Indian sage Patanjali on yoga to Buddhist teachings, and he urges practitioners of yoga and meditation to use yoga’s asanas, or positions, as opportunities for mindfulness meditation.

  • Buddhism arose from Hindu-yoga origins, and yoga, at least as it is now practiced in the United States, may benefit from a clearer understanding of its spiritual importance.
  • Generally, the sequences contain repetitions of positions, but they are designed to lead the learner to new understandings of those postures, so fostering progress in the discipline of yoga.
  • When postures are offered in succession, it might be difficult to follow the accompanying series of photographs since not all phases are depicted in detail.
  • In order to accomplish so much in such a short amount of time, this book is not intended for beginner yoga students or meditators; nonetheless, individuals with established practices may benefit from perceiving the postures in a startling and more spiritual perspective.
