Yoshio Hama’s class, while a serious place for learning, is not without its moments of levity. His words, while instructing a difficult sequence of arm balances, were particularly striking: “You have to be a bit harsh if you want to enter into this stance. This is something I do instead of becoming angry with my wife.” In 1999, Hama moved to Caracas, Venezuela, and began practicing yoga. Prior to moving to New York City in 2008, he studied yoga under the tutelage of many instructors, including Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and Iyengar instructors.

KK: Is there someone who has had a significant impact on your life and work?

It was a life-changing experience.

He taught me more than I could have imagined, not just about yoga asana, but also about how to live by the ethical norms of yoga and how to apply these values in our everyday lives.

He pushes me to a higher degree of proficiency in my practice.

BambooMoves’ Forest Hills headquarters is located in a high-rise building on busy Queens Boulevard, only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the E/F/M/R subway stations. Even in this peaceful studio, the background noise is hardly audible. Sleuth was greeted by a friendly front desk employee who inquired as to whether I was new to the studio or if I had simply not visited in a long time. (This little studio tends to draw those who are already familiar with it.) Given that I hadn’t been to the studio in over a year, I was given an useful tour to refresh my memory of where everything was located.

  1. He also advised that I take it easy on myself because I was new to the class and should not push myself too hard.
  2. Backbending was going to be the focus of this session, and Yoshio had warned us that it was difficult to breathe from the belly while holding a backbend during class.
  3. After that, we held a crescent moon as Yoshio stressed the backbending component of the position, which was followed by downward dog to knees-chest-chin and cobra, among other variations.
  4. Yoshio requested us to perform forearm stand, which was evocative of Dharma Mittra, around 10 minutes into the lesson (we could use the wall if we preferred).
  5. Afterwards, we moved on to more challenging backbends, pausing frequently for vinyasa breaks in between each one.
  6. We then did forearm stand, except this time we sat with our lower backs against the wall instead of against the floor.
  7. We returned to the chin balancing with one leg once again, but this time we hooked the back foot with a strap and increased the strength of the backbend to make it more challenging.

Yoshio instructed us to grip the strap with our palms facing upwards and our hands facing forward.

Yoshio provided some sound suggestions, pointing out that the posture would be more achievable if we twisted while backbending and continued to drive the hips forward.

Yoshio made his way around the room, providing helpful recommendations to each of us on how to achieve this seemingly impossible stance.

A janu sirsasana twist was performed first, followed by a variation of that pose in which a half lotus was used to tie the arm and foot together.

Sleuth hadn’t done lotus in a long and couldn’t remember where the bind was, but Yoshio came to my rescue and provided helpful advice that enabled me to achieve the full expression of the posture.

He talked about each bodily component and asked us to visualize that body part getting cleansed as he did so.

Following our savasana, Yoshio guided us through a ten-minute quiet meditation in which he encouraged us to “simply be a witness.” The class came to a close with a gentle “om shanti” chant.
