Yoga In India: How to Find Your Teacher

Traveling to the birthplace of yoga can be a rewarding experience—if you think ahead about what you’re really looking for while finding a teacher.

Yoga practitioners in the United States long for the opportunity to study with a master yoga teacher in India, where the discipline originated—perhaps at a peaceful ashram nestled among the mountains. I had been mulling over this concept for a long time, and this summer I decided to give it a shot and see how it turned out! Recently, I’ve spent the better part of a month traveling around Northern India, attending yoga courses and conversing with other yogis who have spent months in various ashrams and workshops.

It is true that the Indian subcontinent is home to a large number of yoga instructors.

There are hundreds, probably thousands, of teachers dispersed across vast distances, and there is no one handbook that tells you who is who among them.

If your yoga objectives are less specific, you can still locate a reputable teacher; you simply need to be prepared to spend significantly more time on the road.

Decide What You Want

In general, there are two approaches that foreign yogis use when attempting to connect with a guru in India. Some people organize targeted yoga retreats, while others prefer to explore. It is critical for everybody, but especially for individuals with specific objectives and/or limited time, to conduct thorough research before purchasing an airline ticket. Consider the possibility that you’d want to study at the B.K.S. Iyengar Institute in Pune, where you’d have the opportunity to collaborate with some of the best professors in the field.

  • Moreover, while there are several yoga centers around the country that do have places available for drop-in students, many of them fill up quickly during the peak season (which varies from place to place, depending on the weather, but is generally between November and March).
  • Fortunately, certain places are well-known for housing a large number of yoga instructors, many of whom have excellent reputations.
  • Whether you want to narrow your focus or broaden your horizons, you may start by looking at some of the cities that have a large number of yoga teachers.
  • However, at any of these locations, you’ll find hundreds of other visitors vying for the same available space.
  • If you’re searching for a peaceful yoga holiday, though, wandering around such crowded and hectic cities may be difficult to accomplish.

The majority of tourists report that it takes two or three weeks of unsettling seeking before they discover a comfortable ashram with a guru in whom they have confidence. Also see 13 Yoga-Friendly Resorts for Your Next Vacation for more ideas.

Ask for Advice

One of the most dependable methods for finding the correct instructor is to speak with other tourists, just as you would speak with other yoga practitioners at home to identify the most appropriate studio. Despite the fact that I knew very nothing about the yoga scene before being in Dharmsala, other yogis provided me with invaluable information on the top Iyengar, Sivananda, and Ashtanga instructors in the area within just two days of my arrival. Learning from other people’s experiences and failures is an excellent approach to gain useful information quickly, which is especially important while traveling by foot.

Always Be Careful

We should also mention a few precautions to be aware of. One thing I’ve noticed is that many of the yoga instructors I’ve worked with in India (including those teaching Iyengar classes) have a much looser sense of accuracy in alignment than I’m used to in my American yoga sessions. They have a distinctly different notion of what is safe and healthy for them to consume. When working with instructors whose first language is not English, bridging the cultural gap can often be a question of translation as much as communication.

Another piece of advice: there will always be a few people who will take advantage of India’s reputation as a spiritual sanctuary in order to make money off of foreigners who are searching for the ultimate yoga experience in the country.

Occasionally, things can get more sinister, and hence it is vital to exercise additional caution, particularly for ladies traveling alone.

And I’ve heard other accounts, including ones about post-yoga embraces that were mostly innocuous but nevertheless unwanted and unnecessarily personal.

Allow Yourself To Be Surprised

After putting aside the cautionary notes, it is well worth the effort to locate a qualified teacher in India. Meeting instructors from various yoga traditions has been a wonderful experience for me, and I’m gaining a huge lot of knowledge from observing how different Indian yogis approach the practice. When you’re not in a classroom, the experience of traveling itself may be a wonderful opportunity to work on your yoga-inspired life goals: patience and compassion are often challenged and stretched when on a foreign vacation.

In the end, I may be the most important guru I have—and learning to trust myself more as I receive information from instructors all around the globe is possibly the most direct road toward improvement I will ever find.

Sometimes it takes traveling halfway around the world to realize that you already have all you need right in front of you. See alsoA Yogi’s Travel Guide to India for more information. a little about our author Rachel Brahinsky is a writer and yoga instructor who lives in San Francisco.

In this series of posts, YJ contributors share their experiences of yoga in its birthplace. If you’ve considered traveling to India to practice, to find your teacher, or to find yourself, learn more here weekly about what you can—and can’t—expect.

In India, it is simple to find someone with whom to engage in “yoga.” Many self-described swamis, yogis, and gurus may be found teaching at yoga studios, temples, and centers all across the United States. Finding your teacher, a fully enlightened soul, on the other hand, is like discovering a diamond in the midst of coal. Discovering a diamond in the dust is like discovering a diamond in the sand in India.

My Journey to Find My Teacher

In total, it took me 15 years and several frustrating encounters with cubic zirconias before I finally discovered my diamond last year. But it wasn’t until then that I realized I’d been mentally preparing myself for him the whole time. My first journey to India, in 2007, was a life-changing experience. It was my honeymoon, and we made a stop at Sai Baba’s temple in Whitefield as our first (and only) planned trip in India. I was instantly disgusted by the way people treated one another as they attempted to get closer to him.

  • I instructed the small girl to come sit next to me so that her mother could take over my seat at the table.
  • I departed with the hope that my ex-husband shared my sentiments.
  • The two of us decided to take a train to Mysore, where I had intended to train with Pattabhi Jois, but due to the short time span of our stay (a few days), we were not permitted to do so by the local authorities.
  • During those few days, he taught me so much that I continue to use what I learned from him in my profession today.
  • Yoga Festival in India: Tommy Rosen, also available online.
  • Parthasarathy through a pre-recorded video lecture that my partner, Eric Paskel, shared with me in December 2013.
  • Parthasarathy is a spiritual teacher who lives in India.
  • The genuineness and integrity I had been seeking for had finally been discovered.

Everything he stated was logical, accurate, and sincere, and it was simple to comprehend. There will be no bells and whistles. There will be no flowery language or accessories. Simply said, he is a simple man who speaks basic facts.

The Proof Is In the Path

A real seeker, I needed to be certain that my first intuitive sensation was accurate, so I studied his lectures and writings until I finally met him in April 2014, while on my second journey to India, in the Indian capital of New Delhi. Although it was originally intended to serve as a retreat with another instructor, that trip ended up forcing me to reevaluate many of my life decisions, which was both devastating and powerful in the end. When I was looking for another instructor, I practically had to let go of one (and $2500) to get the other.

  1. The Vedanta Academy’s emphasis is on strengthening one’s intellect in order to find one’s actual Self via the application of ancient yogic teachings, which are taught at the school.
  2. The goal is to force the individual to dig inside for solutions.
  3. Despite the fact that the lessons helped me grow for 15 years, the deep-seated sense of “there has to be something more” and “there is something missing here” remained with me throughout my life.
  4. And the strong, muscular, and flexible physique that I had developed over the previous 15 years serves me well on my ongoing quest.
  5. He is my spiritual guide.

“When the student is ready, the master will appear.”

In my experience, the well-known Buddhist aphorism, “When the learner is ready, the master will emerge,” has shown to be true in my case. Whatever stage of your journey you are in and whatever you are naturally inclined to (yoga, philosophy, service, etc.), you will attract the most appropriate instructor for you through the law of attraction. Never, ever follow someone blindly, however. Observe and question them about their practices and teachings, as well as about their pupils and the people in their community.

Yoga&Meditation

Testimonials I had never been to a nation outside of Europe before. Even though I’d seen videos of Sadhguru and the ashram before visiting, the ambiance in person was indescribably beautiful. Because of all of the new experiences, it was necessary for me to take it easy for the first few days. However, as the days went by, I began to observe that the ashram and I were getting along really well together. The Dhyanalinga and Linga Bhairavi, in particular, made significant contributions to this.

  1. Slowly but steadily, I began to feel myself in a manner that I hadn’t felt for a long time.
  2. When I breathe again, I feel myself in my body again, walking and seeing and feeling things for the first time since I was a child.
  3. For the first time in a very long time, I felt completely at ease with myself.
  4. — Bianca, a resident of the Netherlands Making the decision to come to Isha was the finest one I’ve ever made, and I’ve never been happier in my whole life until now.
  5. The point is, I’ve discovered something truly priceless and wonderful in this place.
  6. I’m discovering things about myself that I had no idea I didn’t know.
  7. I’m not sure where this is going, but for the time being, everything is just how it should be, and it’s all because to Sadhguru.

A part of me that has always been there connects with what occurs here at Isha; everything comes so naturally to me – humility, grace, kindness, compassion, generosity – and everything comes so readily to everyone else.

It was both wonderful and tough to spend each hour of learning time, much like a seed must burst open in order for a plant to flourish.

My general fitness, as well as my flexibility, strength, and vibrancy, has significantly improved.

I don’t need any additional health and well-being ideas or theories to be satisfied.

How to Find your Yoga Teaching Niche

At a time when yoga was mostly practiced in India, I doubt that anyone was thinking about teaching niches or the perfect customer profile. You just engaged in yoga practice with a qualified instructor, and that was the end of it. Although we have distinct requirements than those of our fellow humans in India, we do yoga for a variety of reasons that are not always the same as those of our fellow humans in India. It enables you to concentrate, develop clarity, and arrange your instruction far more effectively than if you were attempting to serve everyone with a wide range of abilities.

  • It enables you to concentrate, develop clarity, and arrange your instruction far more effectively than if you were attempting to serve everyone with a wide range of abilities.
  • You’ll naturally attract students who want to stay with you because they connect with your style of teaching when you identify your yoga teaching specialty.
  • You will know how to communicate with them and pass on the beautiful practice of yoga that you have discovered.
  • Here are a few pointers to assist you in putting your finger on the problem.

Your unique skills + unique passions + yoga = your yoga niche

To identify our niche, we must first comprehend what it means to have a niche in the first place. The fact that we repeat a phrase more than once does not imply that it gets more significant. Simply defined, your specialty as a yoga instructor is the lens through which you choose to teach your courses and the types of ancillary services that you wish to provide. As you can see, it has three critical components:

  • Yoga as a practice, which does not always imply the practice of asana. Yoga has a plethora of facets to investigate, such as its philosophy, meditation, and pranayama practices, among others. To be a yoga teacher, you are not required to teach asanas every week or even at a studio
  • Instead, you can teach wherever you like. Describe your particular abilities, which may not necessarily have to be directly related to yoga. For example, you could have a keen sense of spatial awareness, a wicked sense of humour, or a meticulous attention to detail. Passions that are unique to you, such as a drive to learn about biomechanics, a fondness for video editing, or a strong affinity for the country of Sweden.

Let’s put the examples mentioned above:

  • Meditation combined with a keen eye for detail combined with a passion for Sweden equals taking your students on a deep exploration of Sweden through the practice of meditation
  • Yoga philosophy combined with a sense of humour and a passion for video production results in entertaining and informative video material about the ancient concept of yoga
  • An easy to comprehend science-based approach to asana is the result of combining asana with a strong sense of space and an interest in biomechanics.

The practice of meditation combined with a meticulous eye for detail and a passion for Sweden equals taking your students on a comprehensive discovery tour of Sweden. Yogic philosophy + good humor + an interest in video production = entertaining and instructive video material about the ancient concept of yoga; An easy to comprehend science-based approach to asana is the result of combining asana with a strong sense of place and an interest in biomechanics.

Inspire yourself from your favorite yoga teachers

We may draw inspiration from what is presently available to us in order to better comprehend what a niche is. This list includes some of the yoga instructors I know and admire for using their interests and abilities to teach yoga in the most effective way they know how, and for working with students who appreciate their efforts as much as they do.

  • The author, Ché Dyer, is a yoga teacher and graphic designer who combines her creative mind with her love of yoga and her expertise in graphic design to bring a unique viewpoint on creativity and yoga practice in this podcast. As a result, her instruction is rich, colorful, and quirky, and it provides the most value to those who choose to work creatively and practice yoga in this manner. In his dual role as a yoga instructor and a Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr Yogi Gare brings together his extensive understanding of the human body and its mechanics, as well as his ability to communicate things effectively, with the ancient practice of yoga. His sense of humour puts it all together to establish a voice and a niche that is all his own and incredibly useful to the company. Luvena Rangelis an Indian yoga instructor with a strong interest in anatomy as well as a strong sense of justice and ethical principles. She pushes for yoga that is not only physically sound, but also inclusive of people of different backgrounds, shapes, sizes, colors, and other characteristics. The way she teaches yoga, both on and off the mat, enables students who may not look like the stereotypical Western yogi to feel accepted, to have the tools they need to advocate for themselves as yogis, and to think outside of the box.

In our world, there are countless outstanding instructors who provide meaning to the practice of yoga not just by teaching it, but also by teaching it in a way that reaches the hearts and minds of their students on a deep level. If they kept their particular interests and abilities to themselves and did not share them with others outside of their employment as yoga instructors, their effect would be substantially greater. Another thing that these yoga instructors have in common is a thorough awareness of the difficulties, obstacles, and problems that emerge for their pupils when it comes to practicing the art of yoga.

Identifying the requirements you can satisfy once you’ve recognized your abilities and hobbies is another part that’s critical to understanding your niche and figuring out where you fit in.

Find the problems and struggles you can help with

Knowing and understanding the yogis you want to assist will make it much simpler for you to reach out and help them. Not only will you be able to assist them with answers to their issues, but you will also be able to connect with them on a human-to-human level (rather than simply on a teacher-to-student level) since you will understand their emotional difficulties. Think about yourself as if you were one of your pupils and consider the sources of their difficulties, including what makes them angry and unhappy, but also what gives them confidence, happiness, and excitement.

  • Ché Dyer empowers her pupils to create room for their own creativity while also holding them accountable by offering a platform for yoga and creativity. She arranges challenges, provides suggestions for creativity, and does a variety of other things. The problem of time and inaction is solved by making it simple for people to sit down and become creative
  • Dr YogiGare shares his extensive understanding of the human body with yoga practitioners and instructors in a funny and approachable manner. For individuals who are interested in learning more about how to practice and teach better, but do not have the financial resources, time or other resources to further their education, he makes tough subject easily accessible and understandable. He, like Ché, makes it easier for pupils to get access to the knowledge they need. In addition, LuvenaRangel allows students and teachers who may not feel accepted in the present yoga venue to continue practicing and teaching without feeling self-conscious about their appearance or voice. She encourages her fellow Indian instructors by giving them a voice and encouraging them to speak up about the concerns and challenges they face as a result of the way yoga is practiced in our contemporary environment.

What all three teachers have in common is that they are acutely aware of the issues that their pupils are experiencing and do not just set out to make them “feel better.” They choose a single point of view and adhere to it, therefore effectively meeting the demands of their students. Of course, not everyone is interested in what they have to offer, but those who stand to gain from their services are enthusiastic.

Final Note: Don’t be afraid to think outside the box

In the beginning of my career as a yoga instructor, I had a lot of ideas about how I wanted my courses to appear, what I wanted to write about on my website, and what I wanted to promote on social media. But there was a part of me that questioned the validity of these ideas. I found myself thinking, but is it even considered yoga by some? There are several ways in which we can individually contribute to making yoga more accessible to everyone, and the most effective way to do so is to be clear about our own abilities and to put those strengths to work for those who are most in need.

  • Our attention improves when we meditate, practice pranayama, do yoga poses, or study yoga philosophy, among other things.
  • After all, one of the goals of asana is to assist us in developing a sense of connection with oneself so that we can sit quietly in meditation.
  • There are several ways in which we can individually contribute to making yoga more accessible to everyone, and the most effective way to do so is to be clear about our own abilities and to put those strengths to work for those who are most in need.
  • Allow ideas and concepts to emerge naturally over time, and don’t put any pressure on yourself to have all of the answers right now.
  • Your yoga company has the ability to make a significant and positive difference in the lives of your students.

What should I absolutely not do while visiting India?

As is true in many places, it is generally helpful to do some preliminary study on the culture before traveling there.
