Questions That Have Been Answered Frequently Natori Sorry for the inconvenience, my question did not appear, therefore I re-posted it. I had no idea it took so much time for them to materialize.

  2. After being selected as the first of ten books to be read as part of a Yoga Teacher Training program, I expected it to include a great deal of information on yoga’s physical practice and a hearty dosage of the other (rarely discussed in the West) parts of yoga.
  3. Unlike what I expected, this novel was everything and nothing at the same time.
  4. I was wrong.
  5. The book certainly delivered on that, but it also surprised me with the LEVEL of information it provided – a level that is obviously necessary of any book for aspiring Yoga instructors, but I feel that this book could be grasped by the ordinary practitioner as well.
  6. Even after over a decade of practice, I feel as though I am doing Yoga with a whole new level of awareness as a result of reading this book.
  7. Understandably, there is only so much information that can be covered in a single book (and this book is PACKED with information), but I was sad to see that several of my favorite poses (many of which are beginner-to-intermediate level) were left out of the book.

A significant piece of evidence that yoga is considerably more than “simply stretching” may be found in this book.

This book will help you reconnect with your practice in ways you never believed possible.

What I took from this book was the tools to start forming a yoga practice.

And I plan to reread the book sometime next year.

It’s an excellent general introduction to the subject, including lovely insight into the yamas and niyamas and a number of sequences designed for certain physical, structural and energetic results.

This was the first yoga book I bought, way back When a yoga student desires more information about yoga, this is THE first book I recommend.

There are photos, drawings and diagrams that explain everything from alignment in certain asanas to how the energetics of the neuroendocrine system is arranged.

What I like about this book is that it gives a fairly good overview of what of your body is engaged in yoga practice.

Subscribe to Outside+ now to get unique access to all of our content, including sequences, instructor tips, video lessons, and much more. A lucid and entertaining guide to beginning a yoga practice, written by Holt LongtimeYoga Journal writer Farhi, that will excite the body while also nourishing the spirit is available now. This ambitious work aspires to be not just a comprehensive guide, but also an atotalone, and Farhi does this without producing a volume the size of a phone book. Approximately 80 pages of discourse about the nature and purpose of yoga, theyamas and niyamas, such practicalities as creating a practice space and using equipment, and the conceptual foundation of the book, the “seven moving principles,” which she claims underlie all human motion: breathing, yielding to the flow of energy, radiating, centering, supporting, aligning, and engaging are the first seven moving principles.

Over the course of the following 200 pages, she provides instruction and discussion on a large number of asanas (ably demonstrated by Farhi, her partner Mark Bouckoms, and two other yogis).

And everyone who is interested in yoga should take the philosophical reasons she provides into consideration.

Farhi delivers these points without coming out as doctrinaire or heavy-handed, and she constantly keeps her attention on the objective of “realizing our fundamental completeness” as she goes.

Judith Lasater says “the purpose of asana practice is to learn to live in one’s body and to sense clearly through one’s body,” and there is enough clear perception in this great book to assist yoga students of all experience levels go a long way toward achieving that often-elusive goal.

  • Donna Farhi is one of my favorite yoga instructors because she has a genuine grasp of and passion for the practice. She epitomizes the essence of what yoga is all about and remains faithful to the original nature of the practice. The western world is notorious for bastardizing everything and everything, especially when it comes to things that are derived from Eastern culture. However, this book does not fall victim to such bastardization. Excellent for beginners, as it includes photographs of both the proper and wrong positions, which are sometimes misinterpreted when people first start practicing yoga. Although this is an excellent reference resource for any yoga student, if you are searching for more advanced positions, you should go elsewhere.
