In this little but highly productive volume, Leza Lowitz brings together her two great passions: yoga and poetry, and the result is a collection of exquisite poems inspired by the study and practice of yoga. This collection of five dozen poems is divided into eight divisions, each of which represents one of the eight limbs of yoga; each of the poems is titled after a certain asana or breathing technique.

Through her varied professional life, she spent five years in Japan, which is reflected in her writing, which is Zenlike in its simplicity, and which helps the reader appreciate yoga as a result of her poetry and the reader’s enjoyment of the yoga experience.

Lowitz, on the other hand, uses the experience of an asana as a platform from which to dig the emotional depths of the practice known as Being Alive Now, which is reflected in and stirred up byhatha yoga: ” This collection contains writings on a variety of subjects such as love, fear, infancy, commitment to the notion of “perfection,” eternity, identity, and even a subject as intimate as miscarriage, among others.

This collection of poems serves as a window into a landscape rendered more vivid by the physical creativity and spiritual richness of yoga, and every student of yoga will discover gems to love among the pages of this collection of poems.

The Twentieth Anniversary of “Yoga Poems: Lines to Unfold By”

Nina’s Contribution As a special treat today, I’d like to provide information on a book written by my long-time friend Leza Lowitz (who is now a contributor to this site!) It was released 20 years ago and is still available for purchase. In it, Leza has compiled a wonderful collection of poetry that were directly inspired by her yoga practice. She claims that through stretching and twisting, breathing deeply, and soothing her mind and body, she discovered areas of her body that were quite stiff, as well as reserves brimming with power, stamina, and elegance.

  • While dangling in Downward-Facing Dog, she reveals that the passage from a poem “came to me: ‘Within my body, there is a city” came to her mind.
  • Here’s an illustration of a poem: Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II) is a warrior pose.
  • Some people cling too tightly to the past.
  • The genuine warrior remains in the present moment, burning even more intensely into whatever comes his way, or, in certain cases, even more difficultly, whatever does not.
  • “Writing is a method of infusing meaning into our daily lives.” When we read a wonderful book, we have the impression that the author has spoken directly to our soul and unlocked something that had previously been locked up.
  • This holds true for yoga as well.
  • She also claims that yoga helped her to unblock blocked emotions and memories, as well as to open up previously closed avenues of creativity, and that she became more prolific after beginning her practice in 1994.
  • The ultimate product was a wonderful book, and now I’m happy that it has been in print for more than two decades.
  • More of Leza’s writing may be found at her website, as well as information on her yoga studio and classes at her website.
