Yoga’s Evolving Body Image: Justin Michael Williams’ Call to Action

Subscribe to Outside+ now to get unique access to all of our content, including sequences, instructor tips, video lessons, and much more. In addition to participating in our Practice of Leadership panel, yoga teacher Justin Michael Williams shared his primary insights with us after the event. In this video, he discusses the developing topic of body image and how it is portrayed in today’s yoga community, among other things. Also included are his two most important lessons. When you Google the term yoga, the photos that come up are all too similar—tall, bendy, Caucasian ladies with a gentle glow, folded into pretzel-like poses—and they are all too identical.

However, the times have changed.

Let’s be honest about this.

Despite the fact that yoga has been available in the United States for several decades, the practice is still in its infancy when it comes to mainstream popularization in the country.

  1. However, yoga is now being made available to individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds, increasing the diversity of the practice and providing opportunities for people of various colors, shapes, and sizes to rise to positions of leadership in the public eye.
  2. Take a look at any recent yoga publication.
  3. Yoga styles are evolving to accommodate a wide range of physical types, spiritual practices, and social preferences, among other factors.
  4. I am a biracial man who will be featured on the front cover of a forthcoming issue of Yoga Journal.
  5. It is past time to issue a call to action.
  6. We must totally embrace our authority, immerse ourselves in the practices, and activate our role as leaders.
  7. Learn to promote and use social media just as efficiently as the current yoga icons so that we may disseminate our message over the world as effectively as possible.
  8. Yoga-related media outlets Maintain an open mind to the changes taking place on the ground level of the community.
  9. Keep in mind that the image you project will be the image that yogis strive to, so make room for leaders of all shapes, colors, and sizes and give them a platform to be recognized.
  10. Here’s our chance to provide a clear, transparent, and true public picture of yoga that corresponds to the reality of the community and the ethical principles of the practice, rather than the opposite.

Justin Michael Williams is a social media specialist, public speaker, and yoga instructor who left the corporate world to launch his own yoga-centric social media marketing company. More information about the Practice of Leadership panel at YJLIVE in San Diego can be found here.

“I admit that I was skeptical at first about whether or not I would learn anything new from Justin’s group because I was new to it and because Justin is younger than me. My exposure to meditation and manifestation work began when I was a teen, and I had done comparable work with many masters throughout the years before that. Well. I’ll tell you what, lol! I could feel Justin speaking to me from the time I met him – in his daily micro-lessons and weekly zoom conversations – and I knew it was him.

His ability to communicate what he has learnt from his own work and life experiences is very inspirational, and I am thankful beyond words for him.”

“The most significant change in my life is the sense of serenity and tranquility that I now exude. I’m not bothered by the fact that things aren’t occurring. It doesn’t bother me at all =) I was running on fumes previously and wasn’t even aware of it, but at the same time, I was like a hamster on a wheel, unable to get off the ground. The Daily Power Task was one of the most eye-opening realizations for me. I’m now utilizing it and am significantly more productive and happy as a result of the fact that I’m actually attaining objectives and making things happen in my life.”

Mission:

Through the development, promotion, and support of yoga that is both accessible and body positive, and that reflects the entire range of human variety, our alliance is dedicated to body acceptance. We believe that yoga is a crucial instrument in personal development from the inside out, and that it also has a fundamental social justice component, which is why we challenge industry leaders and media makers to broaden their perception of what it means to be a yogi.

Who We Are:

Yoga instructors, practitioners, experts, educators, activists, authors, business owners, artists, non-profit organizations, and advocates are among those that make up the yoga community. Through a continuous yoga practice that includes physical asana, meditation, and other practices, we have joined together to build a collective dedicated to optimal well-being and good body interactions in the modern world.

Core Values:

  • We believe in the transformational potential of yoga
  • We think that yoga is for every body and that every body is deserving of love
  • And we believe that yoga is for everyone. We feel that negative self-talk and body snarking should be eliminated. In our opinion, the term “love your body” is a multi-dimensional mantra that promotes body acceptance in ourselves as well as in others
  • And It is our belief that body positivity is more than a trending topic on social media, a marketing phrase, or a commodity: it is conscious action and lived practice. When it comes to raising consciousness, we feel that critical thinking is an essential component. When it comes to body positive media material, we believe in conscientious marketing and messaging, both in terms of language and images. When it comes to deconstructing and producing new media imagery, media literacy education, we feel, is essential.

“The Guru is Within”: Insight from Musician and Author Justin Michael Williams

Even though the distance between the Oakland suburb where Justin Michael Williams grew up and his more recent Los Angeles residence is not great, his journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Justin overcame adversity to become a recording artist, author, and motivational speaker who is dedicated to uplifting those who are most in need. Justin was raised by a single mother in an environment of violence and poverty. Meditation has provided as a “integration ground” for him along the way, allowing him to draw together the threads of his many life experiences, as he describes his practice.

  • Once he arrived in Los Angeles, he found yoga and decided to attempt a meditation session as well—both of which he detested to the extreme.
  • Stay Woke: A Meditation Guide for the Rest of Us is a book written by Justin for audiences who might not naturally gravitate toward meditation.
  • Jon Kabat-Zinn has referred to the book as a “godsend,” while Jack Kornfield has described it as “clear, powerful, practical, and delightful.” We, at the iRest Institute, requested Justin, who is personable and multitalented, to share more of his point of view (below).
  • You can watch the session again here.
  • Meditation is not intended to be soothing.
  • Being more alive implies being able to paint with all of the colors on our emotional palette as well as the colors on the palette of our existence at any given time.
  • I give them the ingredients and a recipe, and then tell them they may use as much or as little of those ingredients as they want to make the dish they desire.
  • People will be able to grasp the concept that they have the ability to choose and to find solutions inside themselves, and that they are ultimately the guru.
  • So many of us have been taught that meditation is something that is separate from the reality of our lives; or that it is something that we practice in order to escape from the reality of our lives.

More than ever, the world requires all of us to come together and step into the full power of who we are—the conscious people, the spiritual people, the woke people, the people who believe in justice and equality, as well as people of all colors, genders, social and economic identities—to come together and step into the full power of our being.

  • In my research, I’ve discovered that many of these practices—meditation and mindfulness, crystals and astrology, tarot cards, and pretty much all of the spiritual traditions that we perform as a community—were developed by people of color in the first place.
  • They feel as though they’ve returned home to themselves when they participate in these practices.
  • What is your method and style when it comes to dealing with the subject of spiritual bypassing?
  • It’s common knowledge that meditation is meant to make you feel good, however I believe this to be a fabrication.
  • We have to push things to the bottom of our priorities list in order to survive in the very real reality we live in.
  • I advise individuals to accept their tough feelings and dig deep into the darkness in order to understand why everything is occurring and release it.
  • Whenever we choose to ignore it, it just keeps running, within ourselves and within our lives—the same cycles, the same garbage, over and over again.

As a result, we must give it our all here!

This is a phrase that is frequently used these days.

When does the term come in handy, and when does it become less so?

I don’t believe it is effective, nor do I believe it is beneficial.

Is that habit or item helping me get closer to who I want to be, or is it hindering me from getting there?

There is no such thing as a middle ground.

One of my goals is to assist individuals in recognizing the ways in which we might become our own source of poison.

Have you seen a difference in your artistic expression as a result of meditation, and if so, how?

Music, for me, is more than just an artistic expression or a kind of enjoyment.

My goal with music is intertwined and integrated into all I do, and it guides everything I do.

Music is a key that opens the door to the area within us that is capable of igniting transformation.

What role does your book play in assisting them in doing so?

So frequently, we are taught that we own all of the answers inside ourselves, but no one ever explains how to locate them.

Meditation becomes a treat as a result of this.

In the course of directing this process, I’ve heard a plethora of mantras, ranging from the traditional “Love,” “Peace,” and “Discipline” to more unusual ones such as “Beyonce” and “Salty Rocks”!

Someone I was working with had a mantra that said, “I am the sun,” but it didn’t seem to be resonating with him.

Everything altered as a result of that.

What is the nature of your personal meditation practice?

Every morning, I go to the gym and work out.

My practice is the most essential thing I do in a day because it allows me to connect to the proper energy point at the appropriate time.

It’s what we do in order to become more awakened.
