Off the Mat Into the World Book Club
In addition to being worldwide yoga instructors and prolific authors, the faculty of the social change organization Off the Mat Into the World has penned essential volumes on themes ranging from easily accessible meditation and movement to social justice and equity. The most recent novel covered in our book club was Revolution of the Soul, by Off the Mat co-founder Seane Corn, which is about the art of change. What’s next? This year, we’re looking forward to Jivana Heyman’s forthcoming book about yoga philosophy and service.
Shut Up and Yoga Book Club
Shut Up and Yoga, a digital yoga magazine and teacher collective, offers a free monthly book club that includes written reviews of yoga-centric literature as well as live discussions of the books in question. In the past, authors such as Susanna Barkataki and James Nestor have written books on a variety of topics, such as cultural appropriation of the practice and respiratory science, respectively. Ashleigh Josephine Zuberi, host of the Shut Up and Yoga Book Club and a yoga teacher, approaches each conversation with a yogic perspective: “Reading a diverse array of perspectives and spending time in inquiry and honest dialogue is a natural extension of the yoga practice and an opportunity to refine and transform our beliefs over time,” she writes on the Shut Up and Yoga Book Club website.
The Radical Yogi Book Club
On the website of the Radical Yogi Book Club, which is hosted by Kallie Schut, a yoga teacher and antiracist activist based in the United Kingdom, the club facilitates donation-based online conversations every five to six weeks for “changemakers who are ready to listen, challenge, and heal,” according to the club’s mission statement. How to Start a Book Club at your Yoga Studio in 10 Steps
No matter if you own or operate your own yoga studio, teach at another, or are an active part of your local yoga studio’s community, chances are you can establish a book club at your local yoga studio. Listed below is a guide to putting together an impactful book club event at your local studio. The Yoga Sutras by Patanjali were the first book I ever read as a member of a book club at a yoga studio. Have you taken the time to read it? It’s quite dry. Despite the fact that it has been translated, it still need a translator.
My first experience with a book club at a yoga studio was a complete failure.
And, to be fair, the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali aren’t all that boring — I was just 26 at the time and completely new to the teaching profession.

Step 1:Identifyyour Goal
What do you want to achieve with this book? Here are some examples of possible objectives:
- Encourage students and instructors to interact with one another. Improve your pupils’ comprehension of yoga, enlightenment, good nutrition, and other related concepts. For the purpose of guiding your pupils through a book
- In order to draw in fresh individuals into your workplace
The more detailed you can be with your aim, the less difficult the remainder of the procedure will be for you. Without a clear goal in mind, both you and your team will become disoriented during the process of reaching it. Your objectives will evolve throughout time. Identify your objective right now, and then make it concrete and actionable by following these steps: (For more information on the goal-setting workshop, see this.) If your purpose is to lead your pupils through a book, you might want to think about charging a charge for your services.
Lighter books, more informal sessions, or even just a poster and a Facebook thread on what people are learning while they are reading would be the best way to achieve your aim of fostering interaction between students and instructors Make a decision on what you desire.
Step 2:Choose a Transformational Book
Not all novels are appropriate for book clubs. Not all book club books are appropriate for use in yoga studios. Make your selection from a book that supports and reinforces the habits, evolution, lifestyle, and ethics that you are promoting in your own life and in your yoga studio. If the book isn’t a “Hell, Yeah!” moment for you and the community you’re building, keep exploring until you find one that is a great match for you. Make certain that your book is appropriate for all of your yoga students’ skill levels.
It would have been ideal for an advanced teacher training program rather than an entry-level program.) Yoga students, in my 15 years of experience as a yoga instructor and owner of a yoga studio, want something that is simple to read, simple to perform, and simple to speak about.
They want to sink their teeth into it and see how it improves their life right away, without having to wait a long period. Recall that it’s preferable to just read a few novels a year in your book club than to be in the position of having a failure on your hands.
Step 3: Choose books that have aBook Club Guide
This is the simplest of the three procedures. There is no need to invent wheels in this situation. If an author or publisher isn’t interested in making it simpler for you to manage your club and sell their books, go on to the next one who does care about making your life easier. Verify that the Book Club’s Guide at the back of the book contains appropriate information before proceeding. Look for online resources that the book’s author has made for book club hosts and members as well as for the book itself.
This simplifies things for both the host and the members.
Step 4: Set your schedule.
Choose the books you wish to read before deciding on the number of books you want to read in a given calendar year. Decide on the most convenient time and place to meet for that book. How many meetings are there? The feeling of being underwhelmed has become the new black. If you have a new book every month, it will be far too much for you to handle in terms of organizing, and it will be far too much for your pupils to handle as well. It’s possible that reading one book every quarter is preferable.
- Body Thrive: Uplevel Your Body and Your Life with 10 Habits from Ayurveda and Yoga, for example, is a book that you wish to conduct 2-3 meetings in your studio to promote.
- This relieves you and your members of the need to meet every week while yet fostering a fruitful interaction between you and your members.
- If you divide your members into groups based on their level of dedication, you may relieve yourself of the responsibility of hosting every meeting.
- It is possible to alternate between two books that are best read over a 10-week period, such as Body Thrive, and another book that is best read over five weeks, such as The Desire Map, or two books that are best read in a month if your book club reads one book every quarter.
- You don’t want to make seminars and classes less effective in order to promote your book club.
- When you’re planning your calendar, don’t try to cram a book into a specific amount of time.
Step 5:Choose a Book Club Host
You may or may not wish to serve as the host for the book club. If you don’t want to manage the meetings, locate a yoga instructor that is interested in gaining greater exposure and expanding their class offerings to take over as the meeting leader. A committed student who wants to give back to your studio can also volunteer as the host of this Book Club, or as the host’s assistant, if you ask him or her to. Our more experienced students are keen to give back to the community that has helped them to succeed in their studies.
Recall that running a Book Club with the help of a Book Club Guide is straightforward. Make certain that anyone you choose is someone you know from personal experience is trustworthy and will carry out their responsibilities with joy, excitement, and devotion.
Step 6: Finda time that works for your studio, your members, and your host to meet.
It goes without saying that a book club meeting at 9 a.m. on a Monday will be a failure. When is the most convenient time for your pupils that does not conflict with the studio’s operating hours? On Sunday afternoons and nights, it is common for studios to be empty.
Step 7:Create the Criteria for Attendance
What type of book club do you want to be a part of? Answering these questions will help you choose how many people you want to invite and what your attendance standards will be. This step must be completed before proceeding to the next stage:
- Will you accept walk-ins? Is the book club open to anybody other than studio members? Alternatively, may studio patrons bring their friends, so expanding your community? If it’s a community event, be sure to put it on the local community calendars, which may be found in printed newspapers, internet news, and Facebook groups. What number of individuals do you want to be in your group? Is there a charge or is it completely free? (Please do not make contributions
- Instead, either charge or do not charge.) Fees will allow you to cover the expense of the rent while also recruiting a more serious book club member who will contribute to the income. If it’s free, you’ll be able to cast a wider net and gain more experience. How many sessions do members need to attend in order to become a member of this book club
- Is it necessary for folks to sign up ahead of time? Want to establish a customized Facebook Group for your Yoga Studio Book Club? Here’s how. This might help to establish a more private dialogue on your Yoga Studio Facebook page, which is beneficial. Your book club members may find it beneficial to communicate between sessions on what they are learning and experiencing via the book club. This is especially encouraging because the books you’re likely to read are transformative in nature. It may also imply that the host should visit the location on a regular basis
There are no correct or incorrect replies in this situation. Through trial and error, you will discover what you prefer and what does not function well in your studio environment. On your first round, go with your instincts.
Step 8: Inform Your Patrons
You’ve devised a strategy. Sweet. It’s time to notify your friends and family about it. What you do from here on out will be determined by what you decided previously.
- Create a flyer that includes a 3D version of the book cover. Announce the time and place of the meeting
- Give individuals a one-month notice in advance. That way, individuals will have more time to read the book, and your studio will have more time to generate interest. For a few weeks, make an announcement in class about the book club book of the quarter. It is possible to schedule all four books for the year at the same time if you are on an annual planning cycle, and to have them printed on the studio calendar and website. If this event is open to the public, please notify the publication. Post on your local Facebook groups if you have any. Post a link to the registration page on your Facebook group page. Invite your pals to come with you to the party.
Step 9: Roll in out
- Put all of the members of your book club on the same email list. Plan with your host how many email reminders you’ll send out to your members, or use your email program to automate the process entirely. To set up an autoresponder campaign, contact the customer support department of your email marketing service provider (for example, Mailchimp). Write all of your reminder emails before the course begins in a single session before the course begins. Use your email program to automate the process. ) Configure the weekly reminders to ensure that everyone reads on time, participates in the forum, and attends live meetings. Make sure the host (who may or may not be you) is prepared for the book club meetings at least 10 minutes before the start time. The lights are on, the doors are open, and the book club guide and book are prepared. In order to create a warm and inviting environment, Invite them to bring a cup of tea with them, or offer to provide one if you are able to do so without putting too much more work)
Step 10: Get Feedback
As with any last stage, you’ll want to acquire some feedback after you’ve completed it. Wufoo forms are preferred by me since they are more stylised for my yoga students. Initiate a survey in which individuals may tell you about their experience, evaluate the book club, propose a future book club title, and make other ideas, in addition to leaving a testimonial that you can use in future public relations for your yoga studio. SYNOPSIS: Anger, fear, guilt, denial, and silence are all emotions that people experience. This is how ordinary white folks react when they are informed that they have done or said anything that has – unwittingly – caused racial offense or hurt. However, these emotions merely serve to suppress people of color, who are unable to provide honest criticism to ‘liberal’ white people for fear of inciting a potentially harmful emotional reaction in the latter. To build community and provide a safe environment for crucial dialogues, start a yoga-themed book club at your studio or location. In order to provide an accessible means for my students at my yoga studio to learn about yoga philosophy and history, I established a yogi book club. The ability of yoga to deliver on superficial benefits such as increased flexibility and strength has earned it a reputation in North America; however, its deeper benefits (such as its ability to increase self-awareness and self-compassion) have not received as much attention in the mainstream media.
- Once students have had a profound experience in a yoga class, they often become interested and want to learn more about the tradition’s origins as well as what we, as instructors, mean when we talk about “living your yoga off of the mat.” This is understandable.
- What is the point of a book club, though?
- Monthly themes are tied to yoga, and the book delves into each of these themes in depth.
- Because our book club isn’t delving into literary principles, it isn’t scary; rather, it is more like a hangout where you can shoot the sh*t with friends.
- After book club, I feel enriched and energized, and I’m filled with ideas, humour, information, and a strong sense of belonging to my community.
- A book club is a great method to keep each other accountable for reading one book per month, and it is powerful and satisfying to achieve our objectives.
- What is/are your long-term objective(s)?
- These goals serve as the foundation for our conversations and book selections.
This was the first time I had ever been in charge of a book club, so I looked for ideas on the internet and asked acquaintances for recommendations. In light of the fact that I’ve been a book club devotee now for six solid months, here are some words of wisdom from me:
- Beginning with a quick overview of the book and some background information about the author is a good place to start. Making use of the parallels you discovered between the book and yoga, you might next invite others to offer their perspectives on the subject. Organize a list of questions that will stimulate debate
- Put out an effort to keep the conversation on course. Refer back to the book or to a prior statement made by another participant while making comments. There may be some critical evaluations of the book available online that you could share with the group to generate discussion.

In case the “self-help” section of your local book store has frequently beckoned you but also turned you off at the same time because of its name (you don’t need help, you are already whole), then this collection of books is an excellent place to begin your exploration of the field of personal development.
