“The Dream Book: Symbols for Self Understanding” is a fascinating book that further develops Betty Bethards’ concept of reincarnation, karma, and chakras, which I first encountered in “The Dream Book: Symbols for Self Understanding.” It is in this book that she delves deeper into these eastern philosophic/religious principles and also discusses topics such as understanding death as a transition, rather than an end, phenomena and expanding realities, and the importance of meditation in knowing oneself and making the world a better place.

A common theme across her writings is the need of accepting personal responsibility for one’s own actions.

In her opinion, we all have the capability to achieve this inside ourselves, and that no one else can do it for us; we must become our own gurus!

8 Ways to Be Your Own Guru: Activate Your Inner Guru

The term “teacher” or “guru” may mean many different things to different people. It might refer to an expert, an enlightened individual, or someone who encourages us to examine our own limiting ideas. There is no question that these kind of teachers are effective. However, the most potent source of wisdom is found inside. Is it possible to activate our own inner teacher—our own inner guru—so that we always have someone who can offer us advice and support? It is within you that the most potent source of wisdom may be found.

  1. The process of clearing the surface is analogous to that of polishing a rough stone to make it into a diamond.
  2. One of the most significant pieces of work I perform with folks is assisting them in connecting with their own inner guru.
  3. Give yourself permission to trust the nonverbal portion of your brain and you will be able to hear or see exactly where you need to go and what you need do next.
  4. Fear must be deactivated.
  5. And they originate from the verbal section of our brain, which processes less information per second than the non-verbal half of our brain, which is responsible for language.
  6. Take a deep breath and relax.
  7. This beautiful impression of “Ah, this is such a pleasant spot to relax” is a wonderful feeling.

Put your faith in yourself.

Saying no to an invitation to a party that you don’t want to attend is an example of this.

Usually, what happens in these situations is that everything works out and you wind up receiving even more invites as a result of the positive impact your confidence and self-esteem have had on others.

Practice opting out of something simply because you are concerned about what would happen if you don’t.

Develop your intuitive abilities.

What I enjoy doing is visualizing a clean slate and asking myself questions like “What should I do next?” Every now and again, I see a sign.

Other times, a complete scene is played out.

While intuition is entertaining and may provide us with additional knowledge, the first and most important line of defense is your body.

“Go this way!” is frequently indicated by ease and presence of mind.

When you follow the counsel of your inner guru, you will make decisions that will result in a life that is less about striving and more about receiving.

Things happen with easy when we take heart-centered action and place our confidence in the cosmos.

“I don’t believe in miracles, but I rely on them,” remarked either Yogi Bhajan or Wayne Dyer, depending on which source you trust.

How to Be Your Own Guru

“If you encounter the Buddha on the road, kill him,” according to legend, was spoken by the Buddhist scholar Lin Chi in the ninth century. Traditionally, this phrase has been taken as meaning that one should not idolize the Buddha, but rather accept the core of what he taught and learn from it instead. Given that the teachings of a spiritual master such as Buddha may be so profound and life-changing, it’s reasonable that some people may come to see Buddha as their guru, which is a Sanskrit term for “teacher” or “master” that is commonly used in Indian faiths.

I believe that being a follower, student, or disciple of anyone who has genuine wisdom to teach or impart is fine if this is the route one chooses, but I believe that connecting with our own inner wisdom, which each of us possesses, can assist us in determining or deciding what role we want a guru to play in our lives, as well as the expectations we have of them.

In the yoga world, we hear tale after story of gurus who have lost their lives due to sexual assault or harassment. All of the main yoga lineages have experienced some type of abuse in the past (or their present). The experiences of the thousands of pupils of these dethroned gurus who were frantically seeking shelter because they felt lost in the unwelcoming abyss of contemporary life are ones that we don’t hear about enough. People like myself, who were looking for answers to the most fundamental and profound concerns of human existence: “Who am I?” and “What am I?” What am I doing here?

  • We were fortunate enough to come upon yoga, an ancient, indigenous wellspring of mind-blowing enlightenment and incredibly effective techniques that we were able to discover.
  • As a result, we’re faced with the dilemma of whether or not we can separate the instructor from the teachings over and time again.
  • What would you do if you discovered that your instructor had been physically abusive?
  • Is their behavior a detriment to the growth and learning you have obtained while under their supervision?

Embracing your inner teacher

Is it possible that these aren’t the questions we should be asking? Instead, perhaps we should ask ourselves whether we are capable of embracing our own inner teacher. While yoga teachings praise the benefits of the guru, it is possible that the object of that devotion was not intended to be a specific individual. Instead, maybe the guru tattva, the guru principle that is inside our own hearts, could be the focal point of our devotion? True, we all require guidance on our life’s journey, but our yoga practice provides us with access to our own intuitive knowledge and a profound insight that transcends the intellect at some point along the way.

Discernment or dependency

According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the most significant impediment to our attaining enlightenment is our spiritual ignorance, or avidya. All of yoga’s practices are intended to help us see through the veil that separates us from our luminous spiritual nature and reveal it to us. We must distinguish between the aspects of ourselves that are continuously changing—the body and the mind—and those that are never changing: the spirit, according to Patanjali, in order to conquer spiritual ignorance.

  • One of the primary purposes of our practice is to develop the ability to discriminate and see clearly, which is known as viveka.
  • In the same way, we must give due respect to other current figures of authority.
  • Many politicians employ scare tactics to herd us along, nudging us with dread while they do so.
  • A little distance separates you from donning a horned hat and attacking the Capitol building.
  • This is exactly what has happened with QAnon and its conspiracy theories, which have spread like wildfire across the yoga community.

At least three professors or studio owners were there, according to what I’ve heard. Unfortunately, this appears to be another another episode in a lengthy story of yoga cults and brainwashing practices. A story about people who are duped into believing they are experiencing spiritual enlightenment.

Why yogis are open to influence

We come to yoga in search of answers, with our hearts open and ready to be influenced. We understand that challenging reality is an important aspect of spiritual practice, but we don’t realize how much we put ourselves at risk when we allow ourselves to be influenced by individuals who are not living according to the values they claim to teach. Of course, we all require assistance in order to put these lessons into practice, but we tend to become stuck when we come across a teacher who is unable to assist us in digging a little bit deeper.

  1. I suppose our inner light is so enticing that whomever guides us in the direction of it is permanently recognized as the source of that light.
  2. It reminds me of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, who spends an interminable amount of time looking for the Wizard to assist her in returning home.
  3. “Oh, would you assist me?” Dorothy begs Glinda the Good Witch after a lengthy, circuitous journey in which she is yearning to get home.
  4. We’re in the same boat.
  5. It is no coincidence that the first of the eight limbs of yoga is devoted to ethics.
  6. Deep existential concerns must be held in the embrace of the ethical principles of yoga in order to be addressed effectively.
  7. To put it another way, if the teachings are not ethical, they are not considered yoga.

Be empowered in your practice

It is possible to take positive action to assert the authority that you already possess in order to protect your practice from the effect of unethical leadership as a part of your efforts to keep your practice free of the influence of unethical leadership. One way to do this is to strengthen your own practice and look for methods to make your practice more and more like your own. Creating a practice that supports you wherever you are on any given day, at any given moment—while still being innovative and sensitive to your own needs—is essential in this endeavor.

  • However, courageous inward listening can result in a more rewarding and useful personal practice.
  • I think back to my earliest recollections, when I was a tiny child, when I was a teenager, when I was a young adult, and so on.
  • I wonder whether there is a fundamental element of myself that has remained constant throughout my physical and mental evolution.
  • Yoga’s ultimate purpose is to bring about the realization of this fundamental spirit, and my role is to develop my connection to this area inside.

Our spiritual leaders are not infallible. We’re not any of us. Because of this, we have yoga principles and ethics on which we may rely as we continue down our path. Those, as well as the inner guru.

Is your yoga community safe?

  2. As my body and thoughts have altered, I wonder whether there is an important part of me that has remained constant throughout the process.
  3. Yoga’s ultimate purpose is to bring about the realization of this fundamental spirit, and my role is to strengthen my connection to this area inside myself.
  4. Neither are any of us.
  5. The guru within you and others around you
  • In what ways am I ceding control to this individual or group of people? Are there any instances in which I’ve been pressured to compromise my ethical principles? Have I witnessed this individual or group attack another person, either verbally or physically? Is it possible for me to leave at any point without any negative consequences to my quality of life?

As a result, you may look within and assess if your present approach is meeting your needs:

  • Do I have a greater sense of serenity and satisfaction in my life? Is it true that my connections are improving? Is it possible for me to develop a practice that will support my body, mind, and soul for the rest of my life? What changes might I make to my practice to make it even more supportive of my objectives?

For many years, I believed I required the services of a teacher. I had the impression and felt there were many wiser creatures out there, and I was right. You know, the ones that write the books and make speeches and do workshops and do all of stuff. I had the impression that these folks had studied and were thus more advanced than I was. I got hints, from reading spiritual teachings and connecting with myself, that we are all born knowing, which confirmed my suspicions. When life happens, we get divorced from our spiritual selves and lose sight of the spiritual principles that we were born with.

  • We know it, they know it, so what is it that we can’t just all know at the same time?
  • Given this, it’s understandable that it’s tough to comprehend that we are all equally great, amazing, and wise as any instructor we look up to.
  • We are all born knowing nothing; thus, we must go to school, or seek our parents, or elder siblings, or other adults for help.
  • Several of those people seemed to lack knowledge, but I was informed that I was expected to learn from them, and as a result, I learnt to distrust my own knowledge in order to defer instead to theirs.
  • With each passing day, I became further estranged from the trust and confidence in myself that was my inheritance.
  • Are you looking for anything outside of yourself because you believe you are insufficient as you are?
  • It can be a little perplexing at times.

The fact is that we are all a part of the same totality.

I think all I’m saying is.

I get what you’re saying.

In addition, the sooner we can stop handing our power over to others out of fear, the sooner we will be able to rise as a collective.

That has never happened before, and we have no idea what would happen if it did happen.

This is frequently a deluding illusion.

What our imagination does is shield us from things that have never happened, and most likely will not happen in the future.

It becomes a hindrance.

We all require them for specific tasks, and at various points in our life, we require them much more so than at other times.

That there are so many amazing awakened instructors available right now to assist in the tremendous awakening that is now going place is very fantastic!

Our understanding of ourselves is far superior than that of others.

I’m beginning to realize that the instructor I’ve been waiting for all these time is actually me.

I am aware of my triumphs as well as my weaknesses.

Without the guidance of spiritual instructors, I would not have experienced spiritual awakening.

Furthermore, I am quite enthusiastic about continuing to learn about and from myself.

I’ve had insights to attend specific seminars or purchase particular books that, via their wisdom or synchronicities, have lead me to the next perfect thing that has enriched and enlarged my life in so many more ways than I ever imagined.

We already know the answers, or otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to locate the instructor who lead us to the next teacher who helped us hear the thing in a different manner than we were able to tell ourselves in order to aid us in truly fully comprehending what we were hearing.

As a result, instructors are quite vital!

Our souls, on the other hand, are the ones that direct us along the roads that lead to the instructors.

While our souls know the way, we must listen to them as well as the instructors they direct us to, rather than relying entirely on one teacher or teaching for the “solution.” In my perspective, anyone who claims differently is still working through their own ego and anxiety, which serves to perpetuate the illusion of separateness and separation.

We are all one, and we all have access to the global wellspring of loving consciousness that surrounds us at all times, beckoning us to open our eyes and listen!

The universal energy is calling us to relax into the letting of its assistance and guidance while we pursue our highest good. You have something inside of you, you come from here, and you have it!

  • The self-help space has morphed into yet another form of entertainment, with far too many people listening only to the voices that are the loudest and most insistent.
  • That kind of life-affirming attentiveness directs us inward to find the answers we’re looking for.
  • You start from where you are and do what you can to love what you have.
  • On one end, we have hesitant, kind-of Love.
  • If you want to grow in Love for who you are, you Love what you can on any given day and let that guide you out of the darkness toward bigger, brighter Love.
  • Brilliant.
  • Other days, you’ll know with electric certainty that you are a magnificent, connected creature.

You practice good manners with yourself.

We say and do things to ourselves that we’d never do to other people.

Would you talk to a child like that?

Love says, “You poor thing.

It’s been tough.” Just like your best friend would say after you poured your heart out to her.

You just need some empathy for yourself.

When you can’t rally some compassion for yourself, then seek it out from your friends and heroes, in a healthy way.

We can reflect our lovability to each other.

This isn’t elitist or self-help snobbery; it’s a minimum health requirement.

You don’t look at relationships like spiritual boot camp (even though they are) (even though they are).

You prioritize pleasure.

Pleasure heals.

being.

so much easier.

You reward yourself for trying.

And you don’t set up consequences if you fail.

You go beyond “tolerating” your so-called shortcomings to actually accepting more parts of yourself.

Tolerance keeps you on guard — you are, effectively, only managing degrees of irritation with yourself.

Doing this creates an intimacy with yourself that can never be interrupted.

The ancient philosopher Plotinus said that on the journey to enlightenment, you go from being alone to Alone.

It’s a big job.

We are concerned about our own loneliness and the loneliness of others, and as a result, we are more concerned about the world we are creating.

Whenever you say Yes, you mean Yes, and whenever you say No, you mean No.

You truly believe what you say.

You are willing to take chances.

You soar up to meet your quantum self, which has been expanded with Love.

Please accept my apologies.

Being so close with oneself allows you to recognize exactly where and when you make mistakes and cause harm to other people.

You’ve built a strong foundation of self-compassion and understanding on which to express your regrets.

You’re not giving up.

It’s a type of stamina that comes from a sense of self-worth and dignity.

All of your criteria are determined by your self-love.

The ability to love oneself is neither a luxury or a gift that confident individuals are given from birth.

It is the process through which you choose what should remain and what should be eliminated from your life.

Love serves as your life energy, as a determining element, and as your greatest source of wisdom.

You will love more people, and you will love them more deeply.

Self-Love develops into a desire to love others.

You are not attempting to achieve your own solitary happiness, are you?

You have a mystical and tactile sense of kinship with others, and you want others to have the same freedoms and pleasure that you have had for yourself.

You are acutely sensitive to the sorrow and yearnings of others, nearly as much as you are to your own.

And, I’ll be honest with you, every now and then I get a little tired of hearing myself tell everyone else what they need to be doing. After all, some of the most powerful spiritual teachers of our day are unable to secure book publishing agreements because they don’t have enough Facebook “likes.” For far too long, the self-help arena has been viewed as a type of entertainment, with the loudest voices being heard far more often than not.

  1. That kind of life-affirming concentration directs us inside to find the solutions.
  2. You begin with what you have and do all you can to love what you have.
  3. On the one hand, we have a Love that is timid and uncertain.
  4. In order to develop in Love for who you are, you must first Love what you can on each given day and allow that love to lead you away from your current state of darkness and into a greater, brighter Love.
  5. Brilliant.
  6. Sometimes you’ll have electrifying conviction that you are a great, linked creature, and other days you won’t.
  7. You are a model of good manners towards oneself.

In our own minds, we say and do things that we would never say or do to another person.

Would you ever say something like that to a child?

“You wretched creature,” Love exclaims.

“It’s been difficult.” Just like your closest friend would say after you’ve opened up to her about your deepest fears and desires.

All you need is a little compassion for yourself.

When you are unable to muster any compassion for yourself, you should seek it out from your friends and heroes in a healthy manner.

We have the potential to mirror our lovability to one another.

You’re resourceful.

You’re really hot.” You spend your time with individuals who care about you.

Conditions of compassion, resonance, and pleasant humor promote the most rapid growth in your life.

You surround yourself with other Love Crusaders who share your values (and it only takes one other person to have an inner circle).

After years of punishing ourselves and remaining trapped in karmic cycles, allowing ourselves to enjoy ourselves is a brave act.

Pleasure makes all of the (apparently) inescapable difficulties of simply.

Your enjoyment gives you power, and you are aware of this.

You don’t give yourself a reward unless and until you accomplish what you set out to do.

You should be proud of yourself for turning up since loving is an ongoing journey rather than a destination.

Although you may believe that tolerating your flaws is a sign of self-compassion, tolerance is not the same as acceptance in this context.

Instead, you acknowledge that, for the time being at least, this is what you’re going to have to work with: your own personal skills and flaws.

You make a companion out of your loneliness.

The huge Alone is what it feels like to be at the center of your own universe and to be completely alone with oneself.

The positive side of this sensation of isolation is that it makes us more attentive and available to connect with the rest of the world when we do.

The boundaries you have are healthy.

I believe this is due to your Self-Love.

According to Don Miguel Ruiz, “Your level of self-Love is a good indicator of the impeccability of your word.” It is directly proportional to the quality and integrity of your word as to how much you adore yourself and how you feel about yourself.

Taking risks is part of your job duties.

You soar up to meet your quantum self, which has been expanded with Love.

We appreciate your understanding.

Let’s take a step back and consider what the term “guru” means. What exactly is a guru, and how do you go about becoming one yourself? Guru is defined as a teacher, particularly one who offers initiation, which is literally translated as guru. Mentor, teacher, master, expert, or leader are all terms that can be used to describe someone. So, what steps do we need to do to become our own mentor, teacher, and expert? This is something that we have all thought about. What exactly am I? What exactly is my goal?

  • Isn’t this the most difficult question of them all?
  • If I had the opportunity to go back in time and tell my younger self anything, what would it be?
  • Would my younger self heed this counsel and put it into action, or would my younger self turn a blind eye to my elder self’s words of wisdom?
  • “But would I?” wonders the other part.
  • As individuals, I believe that we must go through a variety of experiences throughout our journeys in order to discover who we truly are, how we may have an effect, make a difference, and discover our position in this world.
  • I also believe it contributes to our development as fierce warrior goddesses (and gods), which we are.
  • As I’ve previously stated, going through each and every moment of my life has brought me to where I am now.

I am content, and I am slowly but steadily becoming my own guru.

Various teachers and sources of wisdom about ourselves are sought from those whom we “believe” have insight into our life.

Here’s how to be your own guru.

1. Be your own coach. What do you do when a buddy comes to you with a problem they’re having? You don’t chastise them or refer to them as a moron. There is no need to inform them that you don’t have time for them or to make fun of them. You are the one who calms them down. You point them in the direction of a feasible solution. You reassure them that everything will turn out okay in the end. Make the same decision for yourself. Take some time to calm yourself down, look for answers and methods to alleviate the situation, and tell yourself that everything will be alright.

  • Pay Attention to Your Intuition What would Oprah Winfrey be doing if she followed the path that everyone else felt she should be taking?
