The Breath, Passage to Liberation

Sadhguru:As one’s awareness develops the necessary sharpness or keenness, one of the first things that one automatically becomes aware of is one’s breath, which is one of the most important things to remember. Because breathing is a mechanical process in the body that is continual and continuous, it is quite astounding that the vast majority of human people go their whole lives without being aware of it. However, once the breath is brought into your consciousness, it becomes a very remarkable activity.

  1. It is so fundamental and straightforward, but it comes so effortlessly and organically that it requires no preparation.
  2. When I was six or seven years old, I discovered the pleasures of taking a deep breath.
  3. It wasn’t until much later in life that the concept of meditation entered my consciousness.
  4. The simple act of seeing the continuous, regular movement of my small chest and tummy kept me intrigued and focused for several hours.
  5. They are unable to take a regular breath merely because they are suffering from a major attention deficit.

Bringing Attention into Your Life

The most essential thing you can do is pay attention to your life, and particularly to the lives of our children. The world gives to you only to the extent that you are willing to pay attention to it, regardless of whether it is spiritual or material in nature at the end of the day. The act of taking a breath is a mechanical operation. Every time you take a breath and exhale, your body is through a small spasm of some sort. Except if you are entirely immersed in your own psychological framework, how could you possibly miss it?

  1. Concentrating on one’s breath is a forceful endeavor to do this.
  2. The most essential thing is not to concentrate on the breath, but rather to increase the pitch of your awareness to the point where you are naturally cognizant of your own breathing.
  3. Every time you take a breath and exhale, your body is through a small spasm of some sort.
  4. You will not be able to miss the process of breathing unless you are completely immersed in your own thoughts and feelings.
  5. Incorporating anything into your awareness is not a conscious decision.
  6. When teaching a certain procedure, we may instruct people to concentrate on their breathing since they do not have the requisite degree of awareness.
  7. Do not get caught up in your own thoughts — they are of little significance because they are derived from a very restricted pool of knowledge.

If you stick with it, the breath may transform into a gateway to a more expansive possibilities.

If you simply sit or lie down and remain completely motionless in every aspect, the breath will become a massive process that takes place all of the time.

One method to achieve this is to maintain complete concentration on the breath.

We banded together, drafted policies that crystallized our demands, and successfully elected a new Congress to represent us. As a result, we’re presenting state, municipal, and federal legislation with our colleagues in Congress that will seek to construct institutions that are really safe for Black people. In our efforts to establish our vision for public safety in law, personalized by local communities, and advanced via federal legislation, we have never ceased organizing.

First Amendment Freedoms Need “Breathing Space”

One of the most fundamental issues in First Amendment phraseology and law continues to be the concept of “breathing space.” Individuals should not be discouraged from speaking out or expressing their thoughts because of an atmosphere created by government officials or legislation passed by the legislature. Frequently, more controversial speech is shielded from public scrutiny in order to create “breathing room” for other forms of communication. The NAACP v. Button (1963) case, in which a Virginia statute was used to shut down the NAACP’s civil rights lawsuit activities, was the first time the word was used by the Supreme Court of the United States.

  • Justice William Brennan noted in his opinion for the Court, “Because First Amendment liberties require breathing room in order to exist, the government may regulate in this area only with restricted precision.” The following year, in the famous libel judgment, New York Times Co.
  • Sullivan, Justice Brennan used the term “breathing room” for the first time (1964).
  • Individuals who wish to criticize public leaders would be unable to do so if they were subjected to strict accountability for any false statements they made.
  • The word has been used by the Supreme Court of the United States in more than fifty (50) First Amendment free-speech judgments.

Ayanna Pressley, Democratic Representative for Massachusetts’s 7th congressional district, and Rashida Tlaib, Democratic Representative for Michigan’s 13th congressional district are among the bill’s supporters.

Background

It is proposed by the Electoral Justice Project of the Movement for Black Lives as a federal omnibus law, and it is known as theBREATHE Act. Rather of investing in traditional policing, the bill aims to divert taxpayer resources into alternative, community-based solutions to public safety. Political context

An upsurge in protests began to spread across the country following a succession of widely publicized police shootings of African-Americans, including the slaying of George Floyd and the shooting of Breonna Taylor, which garnered widespread attention. A series of coordinated Juneteenth activities was planned for in reaction to these demonstrations by theMovement for Black Lives (M4BL) and other organizations. M4BL introduced The BREATHE Act, a legislative intervention based on its Vision for Black Lives, on July 6, soon after Independence Day and on the heels of weeks of intense protest.

A virtual party platform conference was held by the Democratic National Committee in July 2020, in anticipation of the Democratic National Convention, during which Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black Lives Matter, talked about her organization’s program.

Appelling on the Democratic Party to endorse the BREATHE Act, Appel stated that “without the significant changes our movement suggested for the 2020 Democratic platform, all claims to allyship and solidarity with our struggle to fight for Black freedom are for nought.” Later in August, at the Democratic National Convention, a film featuring notable performers, including Jane Fonda and Kendrick Sampson, was published in which they read the rejected amendments and urged for them to be incorporated into the DNC platform.

This year, on August 28, 2020, the Movement for Black Lives sponsored the first virtual Black National Convention, with the goal of articulating “a vision for Black Lives before the most important election of our time, and for years to come.” The convention, which served as a throwback to the 1962 National Black Political Convention, included a multi-hour virtual broadcast that included activists such as Tarana Burke and Brittany Packnett Cunningham, and was hosted by Posestar Angelica Ross, among others.

A policy solution to deal with current concerns such as police brutality, climate calamity, and reparations was offered to the convention as a policy solution to deal with the current situation.

Provisions

With the BREATHE Act, lawmakers may advocate for a wide range of measures to combat police brutality and racial injustice in a comprehensive manner. The Act is divided into four sections, each of which calls for the implementation of the following:

  • Section 1: Divesting Federal Resources from Incarceration and Policing
  • Section 2: Investing in New Approaches to Community Safety Using Funding Incentives
  • Section 3: Investing in New Approaches to Community Safety Using Funding Incentives Section 3: Allocating New Funds to Build Healthy, Sustainable, and Equitable Communities for All People
  • Section 4: Holding Political Leaders Accountable for Their Decisions Increasing the level of self-determination in black communities

It would “divest” government resources from prisons and law enforcement, introduce reforms to pretrial detention, sentencing, and prosecution procedures, and lower the Department of Defense’s budget, among other things. It would establish a Neighborhood Demilitarization Program, which would gather and destroy military-grade equipment owned by law enforcement agencies, such as armored vehicles, as part of the program’s implementation. Among other things, the measure would eliminate life sentences, repeal mandatory minimum sentencing legislation, and establish a schedule for the closure of federal prisons and immigration detention facilities.

In contrast to previous reform initiatives, the BREATHE Act explicitly calls on Congress to remove the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, sometimes known as the “crime bill.” Among other things, the BREATHE Act would repeal the “three-strikes law,” which was enacted in 1994 and was intended to deter repeat criminal activity.

Supporters of the bill claim that these behaviors and policies have proven damaging and hazardous.

The 8 Limbs of Yoga explained

The term ‘yoga’ literally translates as ‘to join, to unite, or to yoke’. The real Self, also known as the ‘divine essence,’ the ‘ultimate self,’ or the atman, is the entity with which we want to establish a connection. In some cultures, this is referred to as the soul. If that style of thinking doesn’t resonate with you, remember that the word yoga may also imply separation or disentanglement in several languages. What we’re untangling from is everything that prevents us from feeling free, as the ultimate objective of any yoga practice is to achievemoksha, which literally translates as “liberation or freedom.” In order to achieve this liberation via yoga, one must first understand what it is to be free.

Is it possible to achieve that by enrolling in a detox retreat or by finally touching your toes?

There are eight limbs of yoga, according to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and this road leads to freedom.

1. YAMA – Restraints, moral disciplines or moral vows

These vows, disciplines, or practices that are primarily concerned with the environment around us and our connection with it are referred to as Yama in the first branch of the tree of life.

As beneficial as yoga may be in terms of enhancing physical strength and flexibility while also promoting mental well-being, what’s the point of practicing if we’re going to be inflexible, weak, and stressed out in our daily lives? Yamas are divided into five categories:

  • Ahimsa (non-violence)
  • Satya (truthfulness)
  • Asteya (non-stealing)
  • Brahmacharya (appropriate use of energy)
  • And Aparigraha (non-greed or non-hoarding) are some of the virtues taught in Hinduism.

Yoga is a practice that transforms and benefits every aspect of one’s life, not just the 60 minutes spent on a rubber mat; if we can learn to be kind, truthful, and use our energy in a worthwhile way, we will not only benefit ourselves, but everything and everyone around us as a result of our practice. It is explained in BKS Iyengar’s translation of the Yoga Sutras, titled ‘Light On The Yoga Sutras,’ that the Yamas are “unconditioned by time and place,” which means that no matter who we are, where we come from, or how much yoga we’ve practiced, we can all strive to instill the Yamas in our hearts and minds and lives.

2. NIYAMA – Positive duties or observances

It is customary to examine the second limb, Niyama, in terms of obligations directed towards ourselves, but it may also be applied to our acts toward the rest of the world. Sanskrit verb ‘ni’ is used as a prefix to denote the concept of ‘inward’ or ‘inside’. The Niyamas are divided into five categories:

  • Santosha (satisfaction)
  • Tapas(discipline or scorching desire or, conversely, the burning of desire)
  • Svadhyaya (introspection and study of spiritual books)
  • And isvarapranidaha (surrender to a higher force)
  • Are some of the tenets of Hinduism.

Niyamas are usually practiced by individuals who seek to progress farther down the Yogic path, and they are designed to strengthen one’s personality. Interestingly, the Niyamas have a strong relationship with the Koshas, which are our’sheaths’ or ‘layers’ that connect our physical body to our inner essence. Observe that as we engage with the Niyamas – from saucha to isvararpranidhana – we are directed from the grossest elements of ourselves to the truth deep inside ourselves.

3. ASANA – Posture

If we’re being honest, the wordasanahere doesn’t relate to the capacity to execute an aesthetically pleasing backbend or a handstand; rather, it refers to the seat you would occupy for the practice of meditation. The physical part of yoga is the third step on the way to liberation. The only alignment advice given by Patanjali for this asana is “sthira sukham asanam,” which means that the posture should be stable and pleasant. While traditional texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika list many postures suitable for meditation, including Padmasana (lotus pose) andVirasana (hero pose), this text also informs us that the most important posture is, in fact, sthirasukhasana –which literally translates as “a posture the practitioner can hold comfortably and motionlessly.” Comfortable seating allows us to avoid being ‘pulled’ by physical pains and discomforts, or feeling restless as a result of an uncomfortably positioned body.

Considering the following question in your next yoga class if you usually choose for the ‘advanced’ posture given rather than the one that your body is capable of achieving: “In how many positions do we feel truly comfortable and stable?”

4. PRANAYAMA – Breathing Techniques

Prana is a Sanskrit term that means ‘energy’ or ‘life source.’ As well as describing the fundamental essence that keeps us alive, it may also be used to define the energy that exists in the cosmos around us. Prana is also used to describe the breath, and by focusing on the way we breathe, we may have a significant impact on our mental state. Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of Pranayama is the fact that it can signify two very different things at the same time, which can take us in two completely different paths at this stage in our journey toward liberation.

We may change our state of being by breathing in a different way, but it is up to us whether we interpret this as ‘controlling’ the way we feel or as ‘freeing’ ourselves from the habitual way our minds may be at any given time.

5. PRATYAHARA – Sense withdrawal

While prtyam refers to ‘withdrawing, ‘drawing in, or ‘drawing back,’ the second partahara refers to everything we ‘take in’ on our own initiative, such as the numerous sights, sounds, and fragrances our senses take in on a constant basis. When we sit for a formal meditation practice, this is likely to be the first thing we do when we believe we are meditating; we concentrate on ‘pulling in’ our attention. Drawing inward may include concentrating on our breathing patterns, and as a result, this limb would be closely related to the practice of pranayama as well.

Practising pratyhara does not result in us losing our ability to hear and smell, or to see and feel; rather, it alters our state of mind such that we become so absorbed in what it is we’re focusing on that the things outside of ourselves no longer bother us, and we are able to meditate without becoming easily distracted.

6. DHARANA – Focused Concentration

Dharaname is a Sanskrit word that signifies ‘focused concentration.’ Dhameans signify ‘keeping on to or sustaining’, while Anameans mean ‘other’ or’something else,’ respectively. Dharana and pratyahara are integral aspects of the same aspect as the preceding two limbs, and they are inextricably tied to one another. It is necessary to withdraw all attention from other things in order to concentrate on one item, and in order to pull our senses in, we must concentrate attentively and intensely on that one object.

7. DHYANA – Meditative Absorption

This is the state in which we get entirely engrossed in the concentration of our meditation, and this is when we are truly meditating. 8. SAMADHI – Bliss or Enlightenment

Many of us are familiar with the words amadhias, which translate as ‘bliss’ or ‘enlightenment,’ and this is the culmination of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras’ journey. Having re-organized our interactions with the outer world and with our own inner world, we reach the point of joy at the end of our journey. When we take a closer look at the wordsamadhi, we see that the terms ‘enlightenment’ and’realisation’ do not relate to floating away on a cloud in a state of euphoria and ecstasy. Sorry. In fact, if we split the word in half, we can see that the last stage is made up of two words: sama, which means “same as” or “equal,” as well as dhi, meaning “see,” which means “to see.” A reason why it’s termed “realisation” is because achieving Samadhi is not about escape, drifting away, or being abundantly cheerful; it’s about realizing the very life that is in front of us.

Happiness is the ability to “see evenly” and without interference from the mind, without our experience being conditioned by our preferences, dislikes, or habits, and without the need to judge or grow attached to any one element.

It is not necessarily a state of being or feeling, nor is it a set style of thinking; it is simply the state of being and feeling that one is in.

One of the most essential lessons we can learn from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is that we will not be able to maintain the state of Samadhi for very long unless we are entirely prepared, free of “impressions” such as attachment, aversion, wants, and habits, and with a perfectly pure mind: Once the mind is pure and we have experienced a level of Samadhi that we are able to maintain, we achievemoksha, also known asmukti, which is a permanent state of being freed, emancipated, and unburdened from all obligations.
