Nischala Joy Devi

Although she was originally trained in Western medicine, she began to integrate western medicine with yoga and contributed her expertise to the development of the yoga component of the Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease. She also co-founded the award-winning Commonweal Cancer Help Program. Her book, “The Healing Path of Yoga,” as well as her Abundant WellBeing Audio Series, are both expressions of her teachings. Yogi Amita Devi’s knowledge of yoga, combined with her experience assisting those suffering from life-threatening diseases (particularly heart disease and cancer), led her to develop Yoga of the Heart®, a training and certification program for yoga teachers and health professionals that is specifically designed to adapt yoga practices to meet the specific needs of this population.

She is currently working on a second book.

Recognizing the urgent need for greater love and compassion in today’s world, I wrote this poem.

Life

Yoga teacher Nischala Joy Devi has had formal training in traditional medicine and is a recognized international champion for the benefits of Yoga, including its subtle applications for spiritual growth as well as physical and mental healing. For more than two decades, she was a monastic disciple of Swami Satchidananda, the founder of Integral Yoga, and a member of his community. The fact that Satchidananda was trained in and continuedSwami Sivananda’s practice of introducing women as monks (sanyassins) and treating women as equals, despite strong opposition from other senior Hindus, was very pleasing to her, and she praised him for it.

She was a founding member of the Commonweal Cancer Help Program and was instrumental in the development of the yoga portion of the Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease (Dean Ornish Program).

“Yoga is not a therapy, it is a state of awareness that permits health, harmony, and joy to be our constant companions throughout our whole life’s journey,” she has noted.

She is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists’ Advisory Council, which she chairs.

Nischala Joy Devi

The ultimate feminine interpretation of Patanjali’s YogaSutras, which has now been enlarged to cover all four yoga sutras, is now available. Yogic practice is well renowned for its ability to promote physical health, but the emotional and spiritual advantages of the practice are even more significant. Nischala Joy Devi’s The Secret Power of Yoga is a straightforward, beautiful, and highly personal interpretation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras—the fundamental principles of Yoga practice—that is accessible to everyone.

Her interpretation of each sutra brilliantly catches the essence of the text, and her suggested practices provide various opportunities to incorporate the spirituality of Yoga into your daily life.

However, now, more than ever, there is a strong emphasis on the need of mastering the fundamentals of yoga.
