11 household props to style your watch photos with

All of the Study Notes Greetings and welcome to Study Club! Every Friday at 9 a.m. PT, new watch photography lessons are provided to help you improve your skills. You may join in the fun by following @watchstudieson on Instagram. Best of luck with your studies! One of my favorite aspects of lifestyle product photography is the process of styling an image. Even with this in mind, it may be a daunting task to take on when one feels as though one does not have the necessary items to style their photographs.

  1. I’m talking about anything from old cameras to high-end knives to rusted tools to the latest EDC releases.
  2. To put it another way, the ordinary person does not have these items.
  3. Rather than writing a novel, I’d like to devote today’s post to presenting some of my favorite ordinary home things that may be utilized as lovely picture props.
  4. They’re also an excellent place to start before diving deeper down the deep dark rabbit hole of specialized props, which can be rather intimidating initially.

This week’s challenge

This week, let’s examine some inventive ways to use everyday things as photography props. Make them fascinating, make them one-of-a-kind, and most importantly, make them you! Remember to tag watchstudies in order to share them with the rest of the community.

Household items that double as photography props

In terms of props, I’m a huge believer in functional props — items that are useful in everyday life but can also serve as aesthetic complements to the subject matter you’re shooting (e.g. your watches). So what better approach to uncover useful props than to explore around your house for items you might have overlooked? There are a few categories of things that have been purposefully left out because they are either too apparent (such as watch and camera accessories) or too broad (such as jewelry) (like food and beverages).

Trays

I’m going to start with something that is clear and that most people are already familiar with: trays. If you’re looking for a way to visually compartmentalize your goods while also adding depth, introducing fresh colors and textures, and, of course, subframing your images, trays are an excellent choice.

Having a range of trays in a variety of sizes and depths may provide you with a plethora of decorating possibilities. What I utilize is as follows:

  • Catchall Tray by HookStem
  • Leather valet coin tray by Vera Forma
  • Leather coin tray by Vera Forma

Desk mat

I bought one of these lovely leather mats to line my desk and protect it from the rough dragging of my Magic Mouse long before I started photographing product photography. This mat naturally had a significant impact on my dark style when I began photographing at work on my desk, and I began to appreciate its fine grain texture and clean matte surface for the subtle character they contributed. Who knew my most frequently utilized “prop” was actually sitting right in front of me from the beginning?

Notebooks

I realize we’ve been living in the digital world for quite some time, but many individuals still like the tactile feeling of writing letters by hand. A few notes are undoubtedly tucked away somewhere in your house if you’re one of those folks. Notebooks are lovely expressions of ideas, thoughts, and, if you’re like me, doodles. They’re a great way to express yourself. Use it closed to add depth and visual interest to a frame by flipping to a random page and displaying your chicken scratch. I have three go-to notebooks that I use almost exclusively in my photographs, and they work as well stacked together or separately.

  • Despite the fact that we have been living in the digital age for quite some time, many individuals still like the tactile feel of writing letters by hand. I understand why. A few notebooks are likely to be found in the possession of one of those individuals. Notebooks are lovely expressions of ideas, thoughts, and, if you’re like me, doodles. They are a wonderful way to express yourself. Use it closed to give depth and visual intrigue to a frame, or flip to a random page to show off your chicken scratching skills. I have three go-to notebooks that I use almost exclusively in my photographs, and they perform as well stacked together or separately in any combination. What I make use of is as follows:

Wallets, bags, and pouches

This falls within the category of “things we use to transport other goods.” Everyone has a couple of them laying around that might be used as picture props if they were to look for them. It doesn’t matter if it’s your weathered wallet, your weekendduffel, your tech pouch, or your everyday bag/purse; what you carry to carry your everyday carry (yep, I said it) tends to not only be a nice reflection of you, but it also adds a variety of depth, textures, materials, and folds to your compositions as well.

  • Commodore bi-fold wallet by Vera Forma
  • MTW Fanny Sling by Moment
  • Everyday Backpack 20L by Peak Design
  • 09 Apple Essential Case by Grams28
  • Commodore bi-fold wallet by Vera Forma

Books

It should come as no surprise that one of my favorite home things to photograph is a book, which you can read about here. Whether you’re just utilizing the outer cover or spine, or turning to a stunning spread, books can give so many unique aspects to a photo. Rather than repeat myself, I’ll simply point you to my instruction on photographing with books. What I utilize is as follows:

  • The Design Hotels Book (2020 Edition)
  • My Tiny Atlas
  • The Design Hotels Book (2020 Edition)
  • A Guide by Hodinkee on Watches: A Guide by Hodinkee on Watches
  • A Man’s Watch: Iconic Watches and Stories from the Men Who Wore Them

Packaging

We are a generation of internet consumers, which means that we have a massive amount of merchandise delivered to our doorstep on a daily basis. Even while most packaging is dull and should be recycled or used for cardboard shavings (which is a fantastic concept, by the way), certain firms go the additional mile with their packaging and make saving it for purposes such as photographs entirely worthwhile. One item of packing from Taylor Stitch that I’ve kept for the entire year is a huge envelope-style packet.

I typically use it to layer over other items, concealing the shipping label and other such details while showcasing the really awesome printed San Francisco map on the front. So, before you throw away any packaging, check to see if any of it may be repurposed in your prop collection!

Mug of coffee beans

Every single day, we have a plethora of items delivered to our doorstep since we are a generation of internet buyers. Even though most packaging is dull and should be recycled or used for cardboard shavings (which is a fantastic concept, by the way), certain firms go the additional mile with their packaging and make preserving it for purposes such as photographing their products very worthwhile. I’ve been holding onto a huge envelope-style delivery from Taylor Stitch for the better part of a year now.

In order to conceal the shipping label and other similar details, I generally place it behind other objects, which allows me to display the really awesome printed San Francisco map.

Metal tins

On the subject of packaging, certain daily things are packaged in attractive metal tins that are both functional and attractive. Although the items themselves may not necessarily have anything to do with the timepieces you’re photographing, they certainly give some visual variation to your set-up and make it more interesting. Metal tins also harken back to a time when the majority of goods were packaged in metal tins, so you’re getting some bonus retro appeal as well. You’ll get a lot more character out of them if you rough them up a little.

Mints, hair products, and candles are just a few of the goods that are rather easy to come by.

  • Altoids mints
  • Coltrane Natural Clay Hair Pomade by TriumphDisaster
  • Leather Balm by Vera Forma Leather

Jackets

The fact that coats are the ideal accessories for a watch does not change my mind! Jackets, both artistically and photographically, provide a plethora of elements, materials, and textures that may be used to accent any watch collection. And, maybe most importantly, everyone has at least one jacket in their wardrobe. Check out my guide on shooting jackets and watchesfor a thorough explanation of how to make the most of a jacket as a picture prop.

Phones

Can you think of anything that is more emblematic of our collective way of life right now than our smartphones? Aside from the deterioration of our social skills, our phones also make excellent picture props for lifestyle photography. If you put on your favorite watch case or go entirely bare, you’ll have a fantastic compliment to your timepiece that is also an appropriate reflection of the two items you always carry with you. What I utilize is as follows:

  • IPhone 13 Pro Max
  • IPhone 13 Pro Max Leather Case with MagSafe – Midnight by Apple
  • 121 MagSafe Leather Case by Grams28
  • MagSafe iPhone Case by Bullstrap
  • IPhone 13 Pro Max Leather Case with Mag

Cables

Most cables, like most packaging, are either uninteresting or downright unsightly. Occasionally, though, if you’ve invested in some high-end gadgets, such as headphones or chargers, you’ll find yourself with some equally high-end cables that are worth photographing. In terms of aesthetics, I’m now obsessed with a set of braided Kevlar charging cables from Nomad, which are currently enjoying their second life after they died on me.

Unfortunately, they are no longer employed, but it is wonderful that they are attractive enough to lead a second life. Ideally, you will be able to locate cables in and around your house that are both functional and visually appealing.

Your turn!

5 Back to school photo props that are too cute to skip

Once again, summer has passed us by. After a few months of carefree days spent splashing around in the pool, it’s time to get back into the swing of things and prepare for another year of academics. Also be sure to have your camera ready for when the opportunity arises! The question is, how can you portray the tale of a new school year with photographs? So, how can you capture the events of the first day of school and make them stand out from the crowd of other images taken on the same day? A simple prop may help characterize a significant event, such as the start of a new school year, and this is one of my favorite ways to do it.

These basic modifications serve only to provide context for my viewers and allow me to express clearly what makes these photographs unique and noteworthy.

Consider using them in your back-to-school photographs to memorialize the occasion and preserve the memories.

Backpacks

It seems like yesterday when I think about it. My first day of Kindergarten was the day I received my very first backpack. When I got home, I immediately loaded it with my favorite plush animals and a bag of cookies (because, really, what else could I possibly need at school?!). I couldn’t wait to show it off to my friends. As I jumped about the house with it strapped on my back, I felt like such a big child. And I truly like seeing my own children with their carefully chosen backpacks at the start of each new school year.

They make reference to their respective ages, phases, and personalities. The arrival of a new backpack heralds the start of a new year of study and exploration. Our annual picture custom is to photograph each child with their or her bag, and it is one of my favorite photo traditions.

PHOTO-WORTHY BACKPACKS WE LOVE:

With the memories of my old backpack, I’m glad I bought this tiny backpack! Incorporating the characters that your children adore at this age and stage is a wonderful way to remember what they were interested in at this time, and it is certain to make them smile as they leave for school. Because of the spectrum of colors and captivating sequins on this reversible sequin backpack, it is a favorite of mine for keeping young hands occupied when riding the bus. If you have older children, this Herschel Supply Co.

It’s straightforward and timeless, and it’s exceedingly durable.

Supplies

On the surface, notebooks and pencils, glue sticks and erasers, and other office supplies may not appear to be photogenic topics. School supplies, on the other hand, are an integral element of the start of a new school year, and these goods provide an opportunity for some unique photo possibilities. Consider bringing your camera to the supermarket and photographing your children as they select their items from their shopping list on the way out. Alternatively, you might photograph your child writing his or her name on the front of a notepad (since there is nothing sweeter than a little child writing!).

Test your imagination and see if you can be inspired by items that appear to be insignificant.

PHOTO-WORTHY SUPPLIES WE LOVE:

Number 2 pencils are a staple item on school supply lists all across the world, and they work well in a variety of various photographic situations. These images, whether they are of your child writing her name on a sheet of paper or a macro shot of all those perfectly pointed sharpened ends, should be included on your back-to-school photo list! Composition notebooks are another traditional school item for older students, and they’re a terrific way to announce the beginning of the school year for your resident high schooler (or any other student).

Take photographs of the books that your children will experience in school.

Seuss book or a high school literary classic, documenting the books that your children will encounter in school is a creative approach to show their ages and stages.

You have the freedom to be imaginative here!

Apples

I’m very sure no one longer delivers an apple to the instructor, but apples are still seen as a symbol of education in many cultures. You may use them to mark the beginning of the school year because they are seasonal fruits and vegetables that are in season. You could set up a lovely lifestyle photo of your child at a desk with an apple on it, or you could do something more elaborate. You may arrange for your youngster to physically deliver an apple to his or her teacher and photograph the occasion.

Alternatively, you may create a “A is for apple” still life by using the letters of the alphabet. Using this easy and affordable item, you can give your images that extra special touch of back to school that will make them even more memorable.

The school building

The school building itself serves as an excellent prop to herald the beginning of the school year! Whether your child is attending a new school this year or the same one he or she has attended for years, including the location in your photographs is a terrific way to highlight the occasion of back-to-school. Try choosing a location (such as the main doors of the school) and shooting a photo there every year for the duration of your child’s school career to make an incredible series. It is a memorable approach to capture his or her development while also include the location where so much of that development occurs.

I am quite aware that my primary school is no longer in existence, and having a photograph to show my own children would be wonderful!

Signs

When it comes to capturing the first day of school, there is no rule that you have to be subtle. You may use a lovely sign to spell out all of the specifics of your child’s first day of school! I adore my letterboards because I can use the same one for all five of my children, which is a huge convenience. However, the possibilities for creative back-to-school signage are virtually limitless! You may use a blackboard, a canvas, or simply a sheet of paper in a simple frame to display your work of art.

PHOTO-WORTHY SIGNS WE LOVE:

Felt letter boards are becoming increasingly popular, and I am excited to be a part of the movement! When you are through utilizing them for your back-to-school photo, they may be hung on a wall with adorable sayings for your house, which I think is a wonderful addition. These small back-to-school blackboard signs are very adorable, and I love the concept of using the same sign to display a range of pictures ranging from kindergarten to high school. In addition to watching your child grow and evolve, you may provide all of the specifics for his or her very first day!

That’s why I like the concept of taking back-to-school shots with a kid’s easy-to-use camera.

What matters most is that you have your camera out throughout the back-to-school season, regardless of how you choose to chronicle it.

The specifics will be lost from your memory far too quickly.

Let me know how you utilize these objects in your photos, and if you have any more amazing back-to-school prop recommendations, please share them in the comments section below!

ReactJS – When I change a state, props change too

I’ve discovered that states may change in a React component, however props cannot, unless the Parent component updates them. It’s a rather simple concept to grasp. In order to do this, I’m trying to create a parent component that has an array, give it to a child component, and then assign it to state. In order to better grasp the situation, I’ve introduced additional prop: the function “react” is imported from “react”; the default function is exported Parent() returnChild list=val=”val” /; returnChild list=val=”val” / Here is an example of a Child component that gets props, manages them, and renders the results: class Child goes above and above React.Component state = this.props.list, val = this.props.val ;onValueChange = (e, I = let= this.state; list= e.target.value; this.setState(() = return; ); ;render = this.props.list, val = this.props.val () return (div); console.log(this.props.list, this.props.val); return (div); className=”App” (this.state.list.map() return (input key=value=onChange=/); ) this.state.list.map() return (input key=value=onChange=/); ) this.setState(); /div/div); divput value=onChange=(e) = this.setState(); divput value=onChange=(e) = this.setState(); divput value=onChange=(e) = this.setState() When I attempt to alter the “val” state (which was first initialized with val prop), val prop remains unchanged.

Instead, if I attempt to update one of the items in the array (which was initialized with the list prop), both the state and the props are altered!

What exactly am I doing incorrectly?

23 Too Cute for Words Floor Prop Setups Sure to Give You Baby Fever

An exceedingly wonderful thing about a fresh born baby snuggled up in a floor prop is that it is completely unexpected. Perhaps it is their curly nature or the fact that, as parents, we are always amazed by the beauty of new life, but one thing is certain: these adorable arrangements will make you grin from ear to ear! Warm yourself up and enjoy some of my favorite photographs from the past few weeks!

Miniature Newborn Bed Props

Mini beds are my absolute favorite props at my Houston Newborn Baby Studio, and there are over 100 of them (believe me, there are over 100, ha!) Mini beds are my most favorite props in the whole world! I have a variety of wire, wooden, cream, brown, natural, and other materials on stock. There are also a plethora of fantastic possibilities! One of the responsibilities of being one of the greatest Houston newborn photographers is to provide new parents with alternatives that are distinctive, timeless, and magnificent.

I could go on and on on textiles, texture, caps, bonnets, layers, wrapping, and the list goes on. These sessions are also quite popular with parents since they provide timeless and charming photographs that will be cherished for years to come.

Wooden BowlsRustic Flooring

Each and every baby photographer needs an excellent rustic bowl in their newborn studio while working with babies. Designed to be both masculine and feminine in appearance, the ideal bowl is appropriate for both girl and boy newborns. When placed on an earthside cherub, the bowl should be gentle and serve as the ideal vessel for displaying such a precious little one. This bowl is one of my favorites, and I use it for a variety of various session kinds on a regular basis. Baskets are also essential components of baby photography prop collections since they add much-needed texture to the scene.

In addition to being extremely adaptable, they are also really fashionable!

Baskets look their finest when filled with a wrapped infant, and they’re nested in such a lovely way!

Babies in buckets | oh my

The bucket setting is usually a favorite of mine during a posed newborn session, out of all of the other options. My collection includes everything from wooden to wire; pastel to vibrant; neutral to muted; rough to smooth; and everything in between. This allows for infinite inventiveness as well as a wide range of alternatives based on the size of the child. After all, a 5-pound baby will require a different-sized bucket or pail than a 10-pound infant. Flokati carpets are the best in texture when it comes to newborn photography.

This cream one, on the other hand, is a real pleasure since it’s so fluffy, ha!

This is something I can’t help myself; I like all of my props and enjoy caring for them!
