I Used an Infrared Sauna for 30 Days—Here’s What Happened

My body and mind were in desperate need of a post-lockdown detox and a chance to let go of long-held tension and dread after more than a year of acute isolation and sadness over the loss of routines, livelihoods, and, above all, lives. Enter the sauna, with its cleansing properties. On a family trip to the (mainly scruffy) charming town of French Lick, Indiana, in the late ’80s, I had my first experience with a sauna.

There was an indoor cedar sauna in the condo that we rented for the weekend, but no one in my family appeared to be overjoyed about it.

A calm and soothing haven from a hectic world, even for my troubled teenaged spirit, the sauna was a welcome respite.

As a result, when my local infrared sauna studio, CYL (short for “Change Your Life”) announced a summer special—60 days of sauna for $199—I took advantage of the opportunity.

(Since individual drop-in sessions at CYL cost $35 each session, I was looking at a significant discount.) I was willing to let that sh t go the way our forefathers and foremothers had done it for more than a millennium.

A short history of the sauna

Saunas have been used by humans from at least 2000 BC, according to historical records. Holes cut into the earth in Northern Europe were heated by hot rocks over coals, and they were the first known examples of the technology today. But indigenous tribes all around the world have utilized sweat lodges for religious ceremonies for as long as humans have been around. In Finland, the term “sauna” is derived from the Finnish language, which is not unexpected given that the nation is undisputedly the capital of sauna culture, having 3 million saunas while having a population of just 5 million people.

  2. Gather with friends, family, and neighbors to drink beer and work up a sweat while enjoying the festivities.

  5. We’d drink beers or a bottle of semidry Soviet Champagne between sessions, apply face masks, exfoliate ourselves with used coffee grounds in between sessions, and divulge the most sensitive secrets of our lives to one another.
  6. Hours later, I would walk onto the street, feeling rejuvenated and infused with new optimism as well as renewed determination.
  7. Researchers have coined the term “relaxed alertness” to describe this level of physical awareness, which is the optimal physical condition for higher-order thinking skills such as problem solving and creativity.

Traditional saunas versus infrared saunas

Heat is generated in traditional Finnish saunas by heating the air, which implies that the air temperature must reach somewhere between 185 and 200 degrees in order for the body to begin sweating. As opposed to this, infrared saunas utilize light to heat the body from the inside out, therefore they require a considerably lower temperature, closer to 140 degrees. That means you may stay in an infrared sauna for even longer periods of time and, according to believers, receive even greater detoxification advantages.

The studio is divided into eight sections, each of which has contemporary, grey retractable sauna beds that sit on high platforms. On my initial visit, the front desk worker recommends that I adjust the temperature setting to 7 on the configurable thermostat. You may set the temperature of the bed, lower body, and upper body to any temperature between 1 and 10 according on your preferences.

  2. I’m starting to feel like a human tortilla.
  3. Whatever the case, it’s peaceful, comfortable, and warm.
  4. After about 10 minutes, I begin to break out in a cold sweat.
  5. I wipe the sweat from my brow with the ice-cold towel that was supplied to me.
  6. When the timer eventually goes off, I breathe a sigh of relief.
  7. It’s time to dry off.
  8. (It’s a good idea to bring a stretchy sports bra to put on after the sauna.) The instructor recommended that you wait half an hour before bathing in order for your body to continue to sweat and detoxify after your workout.

Here’s what happened after a month of infrared sauna

As any good researcher will tell you, correlation does not imply causation in every situation. As a result, whenever you try a new wellness trend, it’s important to maintain a healthy level of skepticism about the results. Following 30 days of sweating 4–6 times per week, here are some of my key takeaways.

My skin looks better than it has in years

After a month of regular sauna use, my acne has dramatically improved, and even the texture of my middle-aged skin has become softer. As I go through my nighttime skincare regimen, I find myself luxuriating in the flawless lines of my cheeks and chin, as if I were an actress in an informational commercial. Most of the blackheads have disappeared, with only a few stubborn ones left on my nose. My skin on my body is also smoother and softer as a result of this transformation. When I’m not working, I find myself touching my arms and enjoying the smoothness of them.

This is quite disheartening.

It’s possible that it’s time for a detox.

I did not lose weight

Infrared sauna enthusiasts believe that sessions in the sauna not only increase your general metabolism, but they may also burn up to 600 calories in a single session. How I wish I could lose weight by lying in a bizarre, heated device for 30 minutes every day! But, unfortunately, there was no joy. Yes, you will lose water weight as a result of sweating, but you will quickly restore it as soon as you rehydrate.

Sadly, it’s not a workout…

I have a FitBit, which indicates that my resting heart rate is between 70 and 75 beats per minute (bpm). My heart rate raises to a maximum of 110–115 beats per minute while in the infrared sauna, which is the equivalent of a brisk stroll for me rather than a hard workout. If you have an injury that prevents you from moving about, I believe infrared treatments might be an excellent alternative for you. It is a method of getting some passive cardio workout without having to move.

…but it does help with workout recovery

As a result of returning to the gym (OrangeTheory and heavy lifting) the same week that I began using the sauna, I have seen a significant reduction in muscular pain compared to my previous experience. In the event that you are resuming an exercise regimen following a lockout, you may want to consider including sauna sessions in your schedule.

I experienced relief from chronic pain

For more than a decade, I’ve been dealing with plantar fasciitis in my left foot on and off. Shortly after the start of lockdown, it reappeared with a fury, and it was causing significant disruption to my daily activities. I believe that the combination of returning to the gym and using an infrared sauna has made a significant difference in my suffering. First thing in the morning, I just had a slight tingling sensation in my heel. It’s gone after a couple stretches of time. I experienced a reduction in stress

Sauna time is something I look forward to since it is “me time.” The experience itself is contemplative and calming, and it also provides me with undisturbed time to let my mind to roam and explore new ideas during the process.

When laying in the sauna, worries appear to “melt away” in the same way that they do when soaking in a hot tub. I always come away feeling re-energized and motivated.

So, did the sauna change my life?

No, not at all! It’s a long cry from the communal, joyful sauna experiences I’ve had in Finland and Russia, but it offers its own set of delights and health advantages. An infrared sauna session feels more American—like an expensive, efficient, prescriptive life hack designed to improve your happiness and productivity, rather than an hours-long immersive experience shared with friends—than it does European. I’ll most likely continue when my 60-day trial period has expired, but I’ll need to plan a trip back to Finland as soon as possible to get a taste of the genuine thing.

I went on a mission to find the answers to these concerns, and after I discovered everything that these hot boxes had to offer, I set a goal for myself to complete a 40-minute session every day for a week.

Infrared Sauna versus Traditional Saunas

Infrared saunas vary from regular saunas in that they do more than just heat the air around you. They also heat the body itself. Instead, they employ infrared panels, which generate electromagnetic radiation and heat your body straight from the inside out. The heat penetrates deeper into your body than warm air (which is what conventional saunas utilize), resulting in a more intense sweat than you would get from a traditional sauna. My 1-Week Challenge Experience

To participate in the challenge, I went to a local establishment here in town based on a suggestion and purchased the one-week beginning pack. It all started with a brief tour of the facility and an explanation of how to operate the machine, followed by the start of my first session.

the first day

The sauna was constructed of wood and glass, and it was already heated when I walked inside it when I arrived. I sat down on the towel and closed my eyes, allowing myself to completely relax. After approximately 10 minutes, I did realize that I wasn’t as warm as I would have been in a traditional sauna, which was disappointing. I felt completely at ease and satisfied. The thermostat had been set at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. I was beginning to perspire, so I sat back down on the towel and took a few deep breaths to cool myself down again.

I was really hot, but it wasn’t unbearably so.

Most of my sessions this week followed a similar pattern to this one.

the side effects of detoxing

Within a few hours of my first treatment, I began to have stomach pains that were rather severe. It was only there for a few hours and then it was gone. The first time I got one, I believed it was a fluke, but I ended up getting one almost every day for the next week after I finished my session. On day three, I spoke about it with a member of the studio staff, who explained that it sometimes occur because our bodies are detoxing in a way that they are not accustomed to. Although this was somewhat soothing, I wasn’t really anxious; I was simply terribly uncomfortable!


The third day, I observed that my skin was as smooth and supple as a baby’s bottom and that it had a healthy shine to it. Normally, I’d attribute this to the excellent range of organic and wild collected skin care products that I use (wink wink), but my skin was even more beautiful and silky than usual this morning. My skin looked and felt revitalized, rejuvenated, and brand new.


I definitely noticed a change in the amount of water I retained. I was drinking a lot of water with a squeeze of citrus throughout the day to avoid from being dehydrated, and my body responded quite well to it. My weight hasn’t changed (I don’t weigh myself), but I have seen a decrease in water retention as well as a minor gain in muscle definition, which is a victory in my eyes. However, I must confess that I did not make it to the sauna studio on one of the days during that week. I had to skip a class one day because things were just too busy.

When I woke up the next morning, I noticed that my activity levels were far higher than usual and that my sleep was significantly tougher than usual.

Final Reflections

General, I would strongly advise you to try an Infrared Sauna for yourself if you are wanting to detoxify or start making changes to your overall health and wellness.

Although going for a week straight may seem excessive at first, and the stomach pains were a nuisance, I am confident that it will have a significant influence on your overall well-being if used consistently over a period of time. I’m certain it did on mine!

Our Infrared Sauna Experience (the first 30 days)

It was a long and winding road to get to where I am today, as I wrote about in Why I Started Using the Infrared Sauna for Weight Loss: My Story. And it took an inordinate amount of time. As soon as I began using the sauna, I felt as though I was seeing positive effects and enjoyed the sensations I had after each sauna session. There was no shortage of articles accessible on Google detailing sauna attendees’ initial experiences with infrared saunas, many of which were written by other sauna visitors.

So, here’s what my family’s infrared sauna experience looked like.

Drew, on the other hand, nailed it with “quiet energy.” Every member of my family appears calmer and more invigorated following our sauna sessions, and their ideas are more active and productive!

She became so congested that she couldn’t breathe properly.

I managed to talk her into going to the sauna despite the fact that she didn’t want to do it in the first place. “The sauna absolutely freed up my congestion,” she exclaimed as she walked out of the sauna. “I’m able to take a breath.” It was amazing to see how much better things were becoming!

My previous post, Why I Started Using the Infrared Sauna For Weight Loss, described how I felt after my sauna session as “relaxing and with an improved mood.” I had been attempting to put my feelings into words and had said something like “relaxed and with a new improved mood” after my sauna session (and detox).

The Sauna Made My Chronic Pain – Less Chronic by Reducing It

As a result, this is ridiculously ironic. The benefits of infrared saunas for chronic pain reduction have been discussed in a few papers, most recently in an essay by Dr. Will Cole. When it comes to pain relief, Dr. Cole says that infrared saunas are one of his favorite tools. In his paper, Dr. Cole discusses a number important concepts, including:

  1. It has been shown that using an infrared sauna can assist to decrease inflammation while also increasing the generation of white blood cells. Fibromyalgia affects around 6 million people in the United States. A Japanese research found that one infrared sauna session resulted in a 70% reduction in pain levels. The use of infrared wavelengths promotes circulation, which aids in the relief of stiff joints and achy muscles.

She passed away many weeks before we were able to build the sauna.

But then, as fate would have it, I suffered a severe back injury that left me in excruciating agony that caused me to cry without even realizing I was sobbing.

On a more positive note, I can attest for the capacity of infrared saunas to reduce pain right now!

Even when my pain was at its worst, I saw a significant improvement after each treatment session. I was also able to move and stretch throughout my time in the sauna, which helped me to maintain some of my flexibility and mobility. It was a game-changer, to put it mildly.

Clearing Complexions From Sauna Times

I observed a difference in the appearance of both my children and myself after a few days of beginning to use the sauna. What was particularly intriguing was that everyone of our complexions improved, although in a different way.

  • Andrew’s cheeks are finally tinged with color! When we initially started working with him on his health and fitness a few years ago, his face was completely white with no color. He finally had some color after several years of hard effort on re-establishing his intestinal health and detoxing his body. Several weeks after starting the sauna, his cheeks had turned pink
  • Taylor’s adolescent acne had healed up from her face, arms, and chest in a short period of time
  • And I observed something a little out of the ordinary. For the past several months, I have been completely oblivious to the wrinkles and puffiness around my eyes, and my eye region has begun to appear healthier.

The Skinny on the Infrared SaunaWeight Loss

As I mentioned in the post Why I Began Using the Infrared Sauna for Weight Loss (and Detoxification), my journey to the infrared sauna was a long one (literally). And, I have to admit, one of the primary reasons I purchased the sauna was to lose weight. Articles such as the one from Complete Balance Health Centre, which claims that an infrared sauna can help you burn as many as 300-500 calories in a single 30-minute session, or the one from Self Magazine, which claims that you can burn as many as 600 calories in a single 30-minute sauna session, got my attention.

It appeared like half of the material I discovered was in favor of using a sauna for weight reduction, and the other half didn’t seem to give it any consideration.

I don’t know whether or not I can make a true scientific conclusion on the weight reduction promises because I’ve just been using the infrared sauna for 30 days in a regular manner, but this is quite intriguing.

Here Comes a Weight Loss Equation….

My weight loss adventure has revealed that I am a dieter who loses around 4 pounds every month, as I have written about in previous posts. After using the infrared sauna for 30 consecutive days, I was able to lose 6 pounds! Yes, I did lose an additional two pounds by utilizing the sauna last month. Then there’s this, which is much more intriguing. Based on the premise that each sauna session burns an extra 500 calories, and I averaged 3-4 sauna sessions per week, I would have burnt an additional 6,000–8,000 calories over the course of a 30-day period.

As a result, the math is correct!

And, I’m not sure how successful your diet has been, but a 2 pound weight reduction is a significant accomplishment, and I’ll take it!

It’s Probably Crazy, But I Went to an Urban Sweat Lodge for a Month

Since relocating to Los Angeles two years ago, I’d like to think that I’ve maintained a strong sense of New York-bred reality in a city that is renowned devoted to all things new age and woo-woo, despite the fact that I’ve willingly experimented with some of the city’s most bizarre products. When I relate the story of going to the middle of the desert for a sound bath (despite the fact that the experience was indisputably worthwhile), I laugh at myself; and when I hold my kale and reishi mushroom–infused smoothie, I make fun of the green-juice crowd.

It means that we have early access to some of the most innovative and forward-thinking products and treatments available in the country, but it also means that we must accept the strangeness of living in a place whereErewhonis regarded with deep reverence andtaking a “float” in a sensory deprivation tankis quickly becoming the standard practice.

However, it wasn’t until a few months ago, when I lay wrapped in an infrared blanket atShape House, a self-described “urban sweat lodge,” that I realized I might no longer be able to resist my entire transformation into a true Angeleno.

At this point, I had come to the realization that I no longer felt like a newcomer to the city, and the fact that I was willingly and consistently lying in a pool of my own sweat in the name of wellness—and with no trace of disdain, no less—seemed to vividly (if not hilariously) seal that fate for me.

(This is often the case with many of the alternative treatments available in Los Angeles—one of the disadvantages of being ahead of the health curve.) The most significant distinction between infrared treatments and the saunas with which we are most aware is in the manner in which the body is heated: Steam and dry heat are also used.

“Do I actually smell like that?” I ask myself.

In order to avoid interfering with the afterburn effect, Shape House recommends that you wait an hour or two after each session so that your body has time to calm down on its own.

And that night, I enjoyed the best night’s sleep I had had in months.
