Yoga in action: Let this moment mobilize you

Hello, everyone. Hello, my name is Amber Karnes and I’m here to help you. I’m writing to you as a concerned citizen of the United States, but I’m also writing as a yoga teacher and practitioner, co-founder of the Accessible Yoga Training School, board president of the Accessible Yoga Association, and all-around good person. As I sit down to write this letter, I’ve been sending emails all morning, rescheduling meetings and checking in with people, and it feels surreal to begin these emails with the words “I hope you’re doing OK after the events of yesterday.” I’ve been sending emails all morning, rescheduling meetings and checking in with people.

  1. First and foremost, because words are important, I want to put it in writing: I firmly condemn the acts of the violent crowd that attempted a coup against the government of the United States yesterday, as well as the conduct of President Barack Obama.
  2. This level of brutality is intolerable.
  3. It’s possible that one of the most frightening and widely distributed photographs from yesterday’s pandemonium was of a shirtless man with white nationalist tattoos on his body, bull horns, and a white supremacist face paint.
  4. If you are not a member of the yoga or “wellness” communities on the internet, it may come as a surprise to learn that many people in the wellness and yoga world, including influencers and thought leaders such as Danielle LaPorte, JP Spears, and Dr.
  5. I find it abhorrent and insulting that people are using spiritual teachings to advance the white nationalist objectives of the far right.
  6. A large number of individuals have reached out to me today, expressing their sadness and wondering what they should do in response.
  7. I am a white person, and I would want to address my fellow white people at this time.

I’m thrilled that you’re paying attention and that you’re feeling the need to do something in reaction to the events that occurred yesterday.

In my opinion, it would be a mistake to take action too fast before we have had the time to fully comprehend what has happened in our nerve systems.

This is a promising indicator.

It is your body responding to the humanity of everyone around you, which has been systematically mistreated, abused, and disregarded by a government that was pledged to protect them for the previous four years (and longer).

It is natural to feel nervous or anxious.

It indicates that you are still alive.

If you have this experience, it signifies that you have a primordial and profound connection with the other human beings that dwell on this planet.

As a result of your identification of your fellow humans, your human essence shimmers, vibrates, and rages in response.

Despite the fact that people will be writing analyses about this for the foreseeable future (weeks, months, and years), I believe it is still vital to acknowledge what happened yesterday.

None of this is new, but I do have sympathy for those of you who are witnessing it for the first time and are truly realizing the magnitude of our current situation.

Allow yourself to experience the whole range of human emotions.

Yoga is, at its core, a practice of emancipation for the practitioner.

It’s time to do some introspection (svadhyaya).

The principles of connectivity and humanity from yoga philosophy, as well as your teaching, practice, and day-to-day existence, how do they manifest themselves in your life?

They are so pertinent to us right now.

It is extremely important for marginalized people and those who have undergone trauma to take additional care of themselves during this period of time.

However, we must not utilize this technique to simply vibrate away any negative emotions that may arise as a result of the present happenings in the United States.

It is a case of both/and.

Find out everything there is to know about yourself so that you can recognize your own biases and everything else you have internalized from this culture, and so that you can root out vestiges of white supremacy wherever they appear in your life, in your teaching practice, and in the way you interact with other people.

Learn to realize your own humanity as well as the richness of your human experience, which may involve emotions such as wrath, fury, sadness, grief, and estrangement, among other things.

For the sake of my fellow white yoga practitioners and instructors, I’d like to suggest a few potential topics for them to consider as we jointly experience this moment.

I’d like you to read the following letter with the understanding that I’m modeling learning in front of an audience with this letter. I want to provide whatever assistance I can, while also emphasizing that I am always learning and seeking to do better, to know better, and to love more fervently.

Listen more than you talk (usually)

Good general advise for those who are new to social justice work or to becoming active in the political process includes paying attention and not talking as much as possible. This does not absolve you from participating in the discourse or pointing out instances of racism when they occur. In many cases, white people assume positions of authority when more study, more preparation, greater self-awareness, and greater amplification of disadvantaged voices who are already performing this job are truly required.

Amplify the voices of marginalized folks

Good general advise for those who are new to social justice work or to becoming active in the political process is to pay attention and listen more than they speak. This does not absolve you from participating in the discussion or calling out instances of racism when they occur. In many cases, white people assume positions of authority when more study, more preparation, greater self-awareness, and greater amplification of disadvantaged voices who are already performing this job are truly required.

Speak up when it’s important

You may have noticed that I just finished instructing you to listen more than you speak, yet there are some situations in which quiet is not suitable. The time has come for us to speak up when we see persecution. As Heather Cox Richardsons stated in a Facebook live broadcast a few days ago, one of the most effective methods to prevent the spread of falsehoods and disinformation is to soak up oxygen in the atmosphere. When you hear someone spewing a conspiracy theory or a falsehood (for example, that the election was rigged), tell them to stop it right away.

  • Inquire about the evidence.
  • Permitting misinformation to flourish uncontrolled and white crime to be lauded is a major contributing factor to where we find ourselves now.
  • Is it making you uncomfortable to have those kinds of conversations?
  • That is your body’s way of acknowledging that you are engaged in high-stakes, crucial human job.

Watch for spiritual bypass in yourself and in the teachers that you trust

Peace that is not accompanied by responsibility is not truly peace. Any pleas for a return to normalcy before there is a reckoning are rejected out of hand by this author. Understandably, many people have little confidence in the ability of the government and law enforcement to hold themselves to any level of responsibility or scrutiny. However, holding people accountable still has some significance. Overlooking our responsibilities to ourselves and our fellow human beings by moving on too hastily is a form of dereliction of duty.

Resource yourself (and your people)

Take note of how fatigued you are. I’m not sure about the rest of you, but having a few days off for the holidays did absolutely nothing to rejuvenate me this year. If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you have a great deal of luxury. Be mindful that there are individuals in your immediate vicinity who are traumatized from yesterday’s events, who are already fatigued like you, and who are also coping with food hunger, homelessness, domestic abuse (including stalking), disease, sorrow, unemployment, and other challenges.

Individuals who have greater privilege would do well to pay close attention to how their more marginalized coworkers, acquaintances, and family members are coping with the epidemic as well as the present political atmosphere in which they live.

In the case of white people who are experiencing the sensation of betrayal for the first time, I encourage you to take note of it and allow it to motivate you.

A simple check-in and an offer to make deadlines more flexible would appear to be the very bare minimum that we could provide.

Participate in the political process

Yesterday, President Barack Obama incited a violent crowd to attempt to topple the government of the United States of America. This cannot be allowed to pass with simply a 12-hour Twitter suspension as the primary form of accountability. You should contact your members of Congress in both chambers and inform them that you expect them to hold President Trump and everyone else engaged in yesterday’s brutal attack responsible. If you’d want to utilize an example script, you may find one here. It’s pretty much exactly what I stated when I spoke with my representatives last night.

They keep track of every phone call and email they get, and this information is strongly weighted when it comes time to vote on topics.

In my capacity as a constituent of yours, I respectfully request that you, as my representative in Congress, do everything in your power to advocate immediately for the Vice President and Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and/or support articles of impeachment against the President and Vice President of the United States of America.

  1. Trump should be removed from office for his incitement to violence yesterday, for distributing false information about the voting system, and for instigating rebellion.
  2. It is also my expectation that you would demand a thorough inquiry into any and all law enforcement officials who let this disrespectful and violent incident to take place.
  3. Please make a decision to allow this to alter you.
  4. In the spirit of love and unity, Amber Karnes is a young woman who lives in the United States.

Amber Karnes on Body Inclusivity and Accessibility in YogaBodyful is a website dedicated to body inclusivity and accessibility in yoga. What exactly does “accessible yoga” entail, and how is it pushing other health and fitness organizations to become more inclusive in their practices and teachings? These are just a few of the topics we discuss in this enlightening talk with Amber Karnes, who is now serving as the board president of the Accessible Yoga Association (AYA). The practice of yoga was first introduced to Amber by her trainer as a way to “burn calories on a rest day,” but it eventually evolved into a path that allowed her to finally feel at ease in her own skin and give herself permission to break free from the cycle of dieting and overexercising in order to maintain a certain body weight that could only be maintained through starvation and overexercise.
