5 Ideas for Donating Stuff You Don’t Need (But Is Still Useful)
We all wind up accumulating a lot of stuff that we don’t really need or want. Unwanted presents, items that we upgrade or replace, items that we realize we don’t use or don’t like, and duplicates are all examples of clutter. The list could go on and on. I once met an eager and well-intentioned young man who was attempting to establish a shoe firm with the goal of distributing second-hand shoes to African children. He had gathered thousands of shoes, but he lacked a warehouse, so he was storing them in his yard beneath a canvas, in the open air, to avoid being fined.
- The destination of the shoes, whether there was an established business in the country that would be negatively impacted by an inflow of shoes, or if the shoes were fit for the environment and receivers were all things he hadn’t given any attention to before sending them.
- I’m not sure what happened to the company, but I hope they were able to make a positive difference.
- We may all be guilty of making hasty decisions without giving them enough thought.
- For example, I am aware of charitable organizations that collect gently worn bras.
I do not believe it is appropriate to donate it after that. That is my point of view and my decision. Occasionally, I believe it is easy to fall into the trap of believing that disadvantaged people will be interested in our shabby goods. Actually, it’s possible that they won’t.

Decluttering In A Mindful Manner — Please Organise Me
Because charity stores are now unable to take new contributions, we were inspired to consider how we might consciously purge clutter and excess from our homes – from clothes to food waste – and we’ve put together a list of our best recommendations.
In the event that you are lucky enough to have outdoor area with foot traffic, one simple way is to place products outside with a notice indicating that others are welcome to assist themselves. In my own experience, this has assisted me in getting rid of pre-owned books, outgrown shoes, and various other miscellaneous items – just remember to keep an eye on the weather in case it rains and bring them in overnight; you don’t want puzzle pieces littering the pavement or being accused of fly-tipping (as happened to a friend!) That being said, just about everything we’ve offered in the past has been snapped up in record speed!
Bag it up
Next on the list of simple options are charity collecting bags — when you have a clear-out, place all of your unwanted clothes in a bag and wait for a collection sack to arrive on your doorstep. Remember to check the front of the bag to see what they accept; from past experience, they often accept all clothes, matching shoes, belts/accessories, bedding, books, and other such items, but not bric-a-brac. After that, look up the collection day and put the bag outside first thing in the morning.
Sharing is caring
Recently, I had a pile of children’s games that I needed to get rid of as soon as possible. Eventually, I came up with the idea of photographing the animals and posting them in a Whatsapp group; within 10 minutes, they had all found new homes. For the same reason, if you are a Facebook user, look for ‘Free Items’ groups in your immediate vicinity. Personally, I take pleasure in knowing that my once-cherished possessions will be repurposed in some way.

We have also recently found Young Planet, which is another app that allows parents to donate unused children’s things to other families, both of which are excellent methods to reduce waste.
Helping the homeless
We were just made aware of Get Rid of and Donate, which operates in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, and Lewisham. They are a non-profit organization founded by multi-tasking superhero Andrea Brown that collects and distributes clothing, bedding, books, toys, shoes, technology, furniture, and other items to individuals in need. It is our belief that you will agree that they deserve a standing ovation for their diligent efforts this winter to offer warm garments and footwear to the homeless in London as part of their Rough Sleeper Project – we are certain that you will agree that they deserve a standing ovation!
Dress for success
One of our staff members recently received a huge suitcase of work clothing from a client who no longer need professional attire because she is now working from home. In order to avoid letting the clothes sit around, we contacted Smart Works, a UK charity that dresses and coaches jobless women in order to assist them in returning to work.
