Leaving San Francisco—And Getting Sober

3,000 miles, to be exact, was the distance I traveled to stop consuming alcoholic beverages. I’ve relocated across the nation and back again in order to avoid my own impulses, and it’s been successful. At least for the time being. After all, experts agree that switching up one’s environment is an excellent approach to change a habit. Of course, that is a luxury that those of us who are willing and able to relocate may take advantage of. I, on the other hand, fall into that group. Besides being flighty and perpetually unmarried, I’ve also lived in nine different residences over the course of the previous six years.

See also:  How Yoga Can Help Ease Anxiety

In the course of developing my connection with alcohol, my perspective on various locations transformed as well.

I’d heard that you could make a lot of money in the IT business without putting in a lot of effort, and this seemed appealing.

With that high-stakes combination of wealth and leisure time, I quickly became addicted to drinking every night.

I went to the city, like many others, with a laptop and a dream — as well as a slew of other belongings, of course.

I was completely accurate.

I hadn’t been a heavy drinker in college, which I attributed to a general timidity that I’d managed to overcome.

I worked at startups, which, as I discovered, featured a lot of happy hours around 4 p.m., as well as some at 5 p.m., on weekdays.

The only drawback was that I had more than enough energy to wake up early and create colorful, biased charts for my job as a data scientist, which I did with great gusto.

In San Francisco, I was in love with someone six times.

I began making jokes in a North Beach basement while blacked out and inebriated.

I believed it would be beneficial, and I was probably correct.

I’d eventually learn to embrace my discomfort, but I hadn’t yet mastered the technique.

I’m familiar with the prices of cider at each and every comedy club in the city.

In my younger years, I had a deadly proclivity for drunk-walking, and I can tell you exactly which neighborhoods were safe for going around in the middle of the night (not many).

I’d kept track of which cocktail bars had the best seating for making out in public in the event that a tech guy happened to be in the neighborhood (the bro being me, usually).

I had left the house.

And, to be really honest, that was one of the happiest periods of my life.

In addition, the alcohol had caused me unable to sleep through the night, although I was equally capable of attributing this to my anxieties about the future.

I had an idea that if I made enough changes in my life, a normal relationship with alcohol would just fall into place without any effort.

My dreams of relaxation were just as fleeting as my nocturnal slumbers were in the real world.

As a result, I was just a little bit drunk every night starting about 6 p.m., in order to withstand the bitter cold and the relentless rejection that is open-mic comedy.

Not only that, but what began as a month of rest grew into two years of the comic grind when I was released from prison.

Because I no longer had a work that required me to get up early in the morning, I was able to continue drinking without consequence.

A lot of occurrences occurred in my life that may be regarded as “rock bottom.” But it wasn’t because of the rock bottoms that I quit drinking; rather, it was because of the progressively deteriorating status quo.

I used to think I despised the city, but I soon realized that I knew New York City much too well to be able to dislike it.

I recall the precise morning when I realized it was all over for me.

I felt groggy and had vomited twice earlier in the day.

The problem was that I’d relinquished control of my life to alcohol, and I wished to regain it.

It took me many months and another cross-country transfer to Los Angeles before I was able to really quit my job, but I did it.

And it’s possible that I’ll change my mind later on and decide that I’m okay with a little alcohol, but I’m not holding my breath.

I’m weak, and I enjoy the fact that it’s sunny and warm, and that you can walk to the beach without being shoulder-checked on the street.

Despite the fact that I’ve lived here for over a year, I have few issues regarding the city itself.

I’m reading and writing more, smiling more, sleeping more, and generally feeling better physically.

In some ways, I see why relocating helps people alter their behaviors — I don’t have the muscle memory of heading right to the bar that I have in many places of San Francisco or New York.

When I return to places where I’ve been drinking, I get the impression that the bar is gazing at me, questioning whether I’m truly having a good time — which, to be honest, I’m not always.

Because my pleasant experiences in Los Angeles were made sober, I am able to recall them without the desire to return to a previous state of intoxication.

As a matter of fact, San Francisco is the last city where I could just enjoy my favorite hobby without feeling any nagging sense of guilt.

I like drinking a lot.

I had a drink at work at 4 p.m.

While on dates, seeing events and hanging out with friends, as well as while meandering about Golden Gate Park alone, I indulged in a little libation.

And when I go back, it’s difficult not to see things in a different light.

When I think back on my time in San Francisco, I recall it as gorgeous, having spent hours meandering about messed up and marvelling—something I’d imagined you needed to be drunk to accomplish.

It is true that not everyone has the opportunity or desire to migrate, but here is what I’ve learned: you must be open to the possibility of a change in your life.

It’s not like I was so captivated by the “newness” of my surroundings when I first arrived in Los Angeles that I forgot about my habit of drinking every night.

A true journey, one that included eating marshmallow fluff for supper every night for a month and shutting myself in my room to do Kundalini yoga for a whole month.

I was in a new place, and I had the opportunity to experience a different set of feelings.

I’m content on occasion, but it is not the only thing I desire.

Perhaps San Francisco can be more than simply my drinking city; perhaps it can be the city in which I place a high value on pleasure and enjoyment.

And LA has the potential to be more than just my sober city – it has the potential to be the place where I found myself.

It is not necessary to relocate across the nation, but you must understand that things will not be precisely the same as they were before.

It is entirely up to you whether or not to force it.

I’ve done both and continue to do so.

After giving up liquor for good, I allowed it to change, and I allowed it to alter after realizing that there is more to life than having a good time. However, this does not negate the fact that I miss my drinking city.
